WHAT IS A REX RABBIT?
Rex rabbits have a unique, velvety fur. Unlike most rabbits, the Rex’s coat is exceptionally dense and soft, a result of a genetic mutation that causes its guard hairs to be the same length as the undercoat. This luxurious fur, along with their amazing temperaments, makes them a favorite among rabbit enthusiasts and pet owners.
HISTORY OF REX RABBITS
The Rex rabbit originated in France in the early 20th century. Discovered in a litter of wild gray rabbits in 1919, these unique rabbits were bred for their unusual fur, leading to the development of the Rex breed. The breed was first showcased at a rabbit show in Paris in 1924, where it quickly gained popularity. The Rex rabbit was then exported to other countries.
PET QUALITIES OF REX RABBITS
Rex rabbits are known for their gentle, friendly nature, making them excellent pets. They bond closely with their owners and enjoy being handled, petted, and cuddled. Their intelligence allows them to be litter trained, which is a big advantage for indoor living. With their playful and curious personalities, Rex rabbits are highly engaging pets that love to explore and interact with their environment.
HARLEQUIN AND TRI-COLORING AND MARKINGS
Rex rabbits are available in a variety of colors and patterns, with the Harlequin and tri-colored varieties being particularly striking. Harlequin Rex rabbits feature a mix of two distinct colors, usually in alternating bands or spots, creating a vibrant, patchwork appearance. Tri-colored Rex rabbits display a combination of three colors, often in a more random yet equally stunning pattern.
REX RABBIT CARE
Caring for a Rex rabbit involves providing a balanced diet, regular grooming, and ample mental stimulation. Although their fur is less prone to matting, occasional grooming is still necessary to remove loose hairs and nails needs to be trimmed from time to time. A healthy diet consists of a good quality hay, fresh vegetables and herbs, and high-quality rabbit pellet. Providing toys, tunnels, and safe spaces to explore will keep them mentally and physically stimulated. With proper care, a Rex rabbit can live a long, happy life as a beloved companion.
