Clover Compost

Clover Compost We produce organic compost made from materials sourced on three equestrian farms. Ideal for bedding p The business is limited by space.

Clover Organic Compost is made at Sanctuary Farm, a horse farm with a competitive horse dressage yard, in Kylemore, near Stellenbosch. Our compost is produced from the horse bedding and manure from the 20 dressage horses on the premises and any organic materials sourced on the farm. We also get this from a neighbouring stud farm, as well as waste fruit from pack sheds in the valley and grape and o

live residue from wine and olive farms. We pride ourselves in the high quality of our compost, which consists of ph neutral all-purpose compost, filled with active microbes and a 50% moisture content. It is an excellent growing medium for vegetables, as a lawn dressing and for trees and shrubs. The business has grown from making 10 cubic meter windrows by hand with a couple of unskilled labourers to being highly mechanised, using digger loaders, mechanical sieves and a qualified tractor driver called Abe Antony, who is my right-hand man. The acquisition of a 2-ton tipper truck has put the business on a sound footing. We now produce approximately 100 cubes of compost a month and have up to 800 cubes of compost in production at any one time.

CLOVER ORGANIC COMPOST, WESTERN CAPE

My name is Vicky Croxton. I founded Clover Compost in 2009 in order to reduce the carbon footprint in the Franschhoek valley. I have since then established a permanent Compost Unit on Sanctuary Farm in Kylemore, near Stellenbosch. Initially, I attended a course on Organic Composting with Professor Barbara von Wechmar, Professor of Microbiology at UCT, and I have continued to make compost, working on the principles which she instilled in me.
