Anne Rodgers understands the pressures of corporate life. An experienced business leader, Anne turned to yoga and mindfulness to cope with the rigors of business and to support her own mental health. Anne was so taken with the benefits of mindfulness, as well as the improvements to her own wellbeing, that she took a leap of faith and changed her life’s direction. Anne now supports people in dealing with the pressures of daily life through mindfulness based practices, guiding her clients to replenish and regenerate the mind-body-emotion connection with an emphasis on breath awareness and balancing the nervous system. In founding Oasis Mindfulness, Anne combines 30 years of business wisdom with the latest approaches to mindfulness, helping her clients to find happiness and enjoy life, even in the most challenging professional and personal circumstances. Anne holds a Diploma of Management, a Diploma in Positive Psychology and Wellbeing, and is a registered Hatha Yoga Instructor. How much money do you need ? How much money do you need to live to your values?
I can still hear the words of Katherine Trebeck resonating through my body. “Do you judge yourself and others according to financial status?” My unconscientious self shamefully admits GUILTY.
Then Vanessa Stoykov arrives on the stage and plays the Make a Wish song, Pure Imagination from W***y Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I made a wish and I realised I do not need as much money as I thought to live to MY values. How enlightened and free I feel now.
I am so grateful I get to travel and listen to inspiring speakers so that I can share their insights with my readers.
This revelation came from an accumulation of speakers at the Happiness and its Causes conference.

The way the dog trots out the front door every morning
without a hat or an umbrella,
without any money or the keys to her doghouse
never fails to fill the saucer of my heart with milky admiration.

Who directs your mind?
I used to think the mind was the most wonderful organ of my body, until I realised who was telling me this. Emo Philips

I was walking down a nutty, knobby Jacaranda footpath in Prospect gazing up at stark winter branches when I saw a flash of colour. A flock of rosellas had landed and started to chirp away. I was mesmerised by their playfulness and the contrast of their beauty against the backdrop of the crisp winter sky.

I was on my way to snuggle in to the cosy atmosphere of a cafe and get lost in my emails whilst savouring my daily coffee fix. Next I was talking to Ben who was doing the very same thing. We had a very animated conversation about all things business and ended up swapping referrals for our mutual advantage.

Walking back to the car my brain was buzzing with ideas and the resonance of his words. I jumped into the car and then it hit me. I could not remember walking from the cafe to the car. My mind had gone into auto-pilot and I noted I had missed the pleasure of the colourful singing birds for the pleasure of my buzzing thoughts.

What is the difference between these two experiences?
The difference is choice.

On the way, I had chosen to direct my mind to the knobbly path, branches and birds. I did not choose to direct my mind to dissecting Ben's conversation in analytical depth on the way back. The moment I realised I had mindlessly ventured into the auto-pilot of the mind, is the moment of mindfulness. When you choose where you place your mind you are being mindful and present to the choices you make. Then you can live your life consciously without letting the subconscious part of you, that is full of concerns, worry and fear, make the decisions.

Honing the muscle of mindfulness is one way you can choose to live as the master of your life, without making unconscious patterned choices.

Join me for a day of mindfulness meditation, reflection through journaling, deep restorative yoga and silence. Where there is nowhere to be, nothing to know and no-one to be.

I did not need the notes anyway, they are my security blanket and today I proved to my inner critic Mrs Doubtfire that I can let go.

Has lockdown clipped your wings?
I recall jumping into my car at the end of lockdown and feeling an exuberant wave of freedom, and that was the exact moment I felt like an eagle soaring.

My chest opened and I literally took that breath I had been unconsciously holding for seven days. As I closed my eyes and felt the kiss of the sun, I felt the release of space as freedom coursed through my body and touched my spirit.

In a split second I could see me, free as a bird lifted up beyond my world to see. Yet seeing was not my full experience, it was endlessly more. I had an instant flash of freedom. I was alive and free at last, to do anything I wanted. Alas this was a fading moment, albeit a beautiful one. This momentary deep connection to freedom, what did this really mean to me? How can I feel freedom more beyond a fleeting second.

As I went about doing my dutiful errands, I tucked this experience into my subconscious for reflection during meditation and to trust in the curriculum of my life to bring me the answers.

Then slowly it came to me, like the fusing of loose ends. I came to the realisation that I was living with guilt. Guilt was holding me back from feeling freedom. Ah the elation of insight and my treasured mindfulness practice.

I instantly recognised I needed to free myself from guilt to feel happy.
To let go of the guilt I feel when…

• I buy another pair of tango shoes when I have more than enough
• I pay for the things I do not need but want…think facials and dance lessons
• I am studying and there is housework to be done
• I think of an ex-boyfriend
• I spend too long on my computer when I should be exercising

What guilt are you feeling today?
Can you let it go?
Is feeling guilty stopping you from true happiness and being your best self?

If so, can you do something about it to release your freedom.
I invite you to take the time now to quietly listen inwards and name your emotion, then you can tame your emotion.

Amazingly just by consciously naming an emotion, you offer yourself engagement, distance and perspective. This action ignites a neural pathway in your brain to activate change.

This post has been inspired by my teenage idol Russell Morris who sang, Wings of an Eagle.

Are you qualified to teach mindfulness?

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course is an opportunity to take the first step to becoming a qualified Mindfulness Teacher.

Attending a MBSR course is a mandatory requirement of the gold standard mindfulness training, drawn from the lineage of Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneer of western mindfulness.

My mindfulness teaching journey began six years ago, and this was the exact moment I learned to live comfortably with the highs and lows of life. Once I integrated mindfulness strategies and tools into my day, coupled with a daily formal meditation routine, my life dramatically changed. I felt more in charge of who I was and who I wanted to be.

All my teachings have been developed from the Mindfulness Training Institute of Australasia training curriculum for MBSR (click on link below for more info) and enriched with training from the Oxford Mindfulness Center.

In a recent introductory mindfulness session I had a clinical psychologist say to me "you must have studied very deeply, I have learnt so much". She was very smart as she would not recommend clients until she attended my course.

When something holds up your progress like an Easter supermarket queue, see if you can become aware of your reactions. At these times, it is helpful to “check in” with what’s going on in your mind. Taking a moment to ask yourself:
- What is going through my mind?
- What sensations are there in my body?
- What emotional reactions and impulses am I aware of?

I am privileged to be working with Dr Karen Chan who is clinic director, physiotherapist, acupuncturist, lecturer extraordinaire. Besides she trusted me enough to send her patients to me for yoga classes.

Last night she asked me for a brochure for my next mindfulness course and said she knew of a patient who could benefit. Adding " people are only interested in seeking help externally they are not willing to do the work themselves".

Would you prefer someone else have the answers to how you want to feel and behave?

Rewiring myself through meditation, I have come to realise all the answers to a happy fulfilled life are in the internal work, not the ashrams, cathedrals, medical centers, massages or dog poses. Growing into oneself is constant and it takes a lifetime!

Thankfully we have Karen and other professionals that can help in our times of need. Yet there is a shortage of psychologists available to treat people with mental health issues. And increasingly there are presentations to emergency departments seeking help. Our mental health system is not coping.

My next mindfulness course may fill the widening gap for people who are struggling or who need to know themselves better so they can inspire and lead others.
