We are not a starter pet. We are not easy or cheap to care for. We get sick and need specialised vet treatment. We form life long bonds and don't want you to separate us from our loved ones. We don't want you to steal our babies and sell them.
Do you see me?
I am here.
Not 1, not 2, not 3, nor 4, 5 or 6 BUT 7! Macaws are home and I can confirm that the workload has now reached its peak.
Now imagine having a friend who runs a bird sanctuary, and said friend calls you in hysterics blubbering that there's a fire and they need help.
Anyone who has a macaw will tell you it's like having a 3 year old child...PERMANENTLY.
So now imagine you are asking your friend to help you with 7x 3 year old children (plus more)... to transport, house, feed & make sure they are not showing any signs of illness from the smoke and heat.
Do you have a friend that you could count on to be there for you in a moment like this?
The person who says yes to running into a fire zone, from 3 hours away, to help me and my feather babies is Mel Vincent from Works For Birds.
There are no words or actions that can describe the appreciation for the help and ongoing support from her!
I know for a fact, that without her, this situation could have ended very, very badly.
I will be forever grateful x
Our newest Macaw, who has been known as Seven since their arrival just over a month ago will be given their official name pending DNA results.
In honour of the help we received from Mel, they will be called either Melissa (Girl) or Vincent (Boy).
Little fluffs, looking confused as usual.
Our rescued ex layer girls are settling back in & boy is Cujo, the Rooster happy to have his 7 wives back!
Cujo stayed with the puppies, kitty's & humans during the evacuations and was so worried, looking around for his girls and cocka- doodling more than usual, it was so sad to see.
A big thank you goes out to Dr Jaclyn Gatt from Bird and Exotic Animal Clinic for looking after our Big Brown Fluffy Butts!
Well there goes the peace & quiet!
Shout out to Kelly Jane for taking care of this crazy bunch for us... I know it was not an easy task and at times life threatening (Mad Dog sends his apologies).
They are back home safe & clearly back to their old antics!
Our beautiful pigeons back safely in their loft!
A massive thank you goes out to Unique Beaks Sanctuary & Chez Guy Small Animal Rescue for taking care of these guys.
We've been working hard since the last evacuation setting up new aviaries in preparation of these guys home coming.
We have adapted our emergency plan by placing birds who are harder to catch quickly into aviaries with a skillion roof rather than pitched, making it easier to reach them when they are feeling less cooperative.
One of the many changes we will be making.
Welcome home my sweet babies, I have missed you!
We still have many birds with carers and are working hard to ensure their future safety & are looking forward to finally having them all home soon x
And just incase you missed our babies on the channel 9 news on Saturday night🙊
THANK YOU! to everyone who came to see us at The Pet Show on the weekend, we had a blast discussing all things birds with you.
A special thanks goes out to our exhibit sponsors Meekor, Dart Newborn Photography, Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic & Bird Vet Melbourne. We couldn't have done it without you!
Extra big loves to our feathered babies for being so friendly, patient and cute. It was clear by their behaviour that the training and socialization that they receive on a regular basis really does help birds to adjust to a wide variety of situations. They were total superstars!
Also the biggest thank you to our Volunteers, It took many late nights and long days to prepare and then the crazy non stop rush of people on the weekend left us all completely exhausted but we made it and we did a fantastic job on educating the public.
I couldn't be more proud x
Cujo having a mist & groom this afternoon as I watered the garden💛
Calypso's had a shower & nail trim in preparation for the big day tomorrow... I don't think she's feeling very festive, the walnut treat was thrown to the floor in disgust😂
We need a Christmas Miracle! 🎄
Can you help us?
We are currently a man down and running at least 1 day late for for our biggest boarding drop off date!
We have moved the budgies and cockatiels into their new aviary, the small bird room (formerly the toy making room) has been packed up and then set up for the boarders (after re arranging several times!) The freezer is full of chop and the pellet bins are full to the brim, the bird house has been gutted and its ready for a scrub.
If you have a spare hour or 2 today (Wednesday) and would like to help us get the Bird House in order, we'd appreciate any help.
Tasks that need to be done include, washing walls, mopping & pressure washing cages.
We are looking for helpers from 12pm onwards.
Please text Jasmine on 0425722802 and let her know if you are coming.
