It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news of Chilli Pepper's passing.
Makayla & Chilli are founding members of our Harnessed Bird Social Club and are advocates for all things related to animal welfare.
Chilli was such a sweet little goofball adored by all who met her.

Pictured is Makayla & Chilli at last year's Pet Show held at Melbourne Show Grounds.
As you can see, she bought so much joy to those who met her and will forever be in our hearts.

Rest easy Sweet Girl x Fly high with the angels.

We are not a starter pet. We are not easy or cheap to care for. We get sick and need specialised vet treatment. We form life long bonds and don't want you to separate us from our loved ones. We don't want you to steal our babies and sell them.

Do you see me?
I am here.

Not 1, not 2, not 3, nor 4, 5 or 6 BUT 7! Macaws are home and I can confirm that the workload has now reached its peak.

Now imagine having a friend who runs a bird sanctuary, and said friend calls you in hysterics blubbering that there's a fire and they need help.
Anyone who has a macaw will tell you it's like having a 3 year old child...PERMANENTLY.
So now imagine you are asking your friend to help you with 7x 3 year old children (plus more)... to transport, house, feed & make sure they are not showing any signs of illness from the smoke and heat.
Do you have a friend that you could count on to be there for you in a moment like this?
The person who says yes to running into a fire zone, from 3 hours away, to help me and my feather babies is Mel Vincent from Works For Birds.
There are no words or actions that can describe the appreciation for the help and ongoing support from her!
I know for a fact, that without her, this situation could have ended very, very badly.

I will be forever grateful x

Our newest Macaw, who has been known as Seven since their arrival just over a month ago will be given their official name pending DNA results.
In honour of the help we received from Mel, they will be called either Melissa (Girl) or Vincent (Boy).

Little fluffs, looking confused as usual.

Our rescued ex layer girls are settling back in & boy is Cujo, the Rooster happy to have his 7 wives back!
Cujo stayed with the puppies, kitty's & humans during the evacuations and was so worried, looking around for his girls and cocka- doodling more than usual, it was so sad to see.

A big thank you goes out to Dr Jaclyn Gatt from Bird and Exotic Animal Clinic for looking after our Big Brown Fluffy Butts!

Well there goes the peace & quiet!

Shout out to Kelly Jane for taking care of this crazy bunch for us... I know it was not an easy task and at times life threatening (Mad Dog sends his apologies).
They are back home safe & clearly back to their old antics!

07/03/2024

Our beautiful pigeons back safely in their loft!
A massive thank you goes out to Unique Beaks Sanctuary & Chez Guy Small Animal Rescue for taking care of these guys.

04/03/2024

We've been working hard since the last evacuation setting up new aviaries in preparation of these guys home coming.
We have adapted our emergency plan by placing birds who are harder to catch quickly into aviaries with a skillion roof rather than pitched, making it easier to reach them when they are feeling less cooperative.
One of the many changes we will be making.

Welcome home my sweet babies, I have missed you!

We still have many birds with carers and are working hard to ensure their future safety & are looking forward to finally having them all home soon x

Hi Guys, It's Jasmine here.
I am sorry I haven't been able to reply to all of your messages, It's still a very active situation here and I am currently preparing for Wednesday as we've been told there will be a spike in fire activity and the wind change will send the fire right back towards us.
I am beyond grateful for the support I've received since the evacuation day on Thursday. It is a day I will never forget and a situation I never want to face again.

I will share the sad news that 1 of our little budgies has passed away and Enzo one of our hybrid galah x corellas is currently receiving treatment for bruising and wounds, he's currently receiving treatment with Bird Vet Melbourne and is expected to recover.

I have so many people to thank but for now Lisa from Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue and Mel from Works For Birds are providing me with invaluable support. Without them, I don't know how this would have turned out.
Also a massive thank you to BEAC in Williamstown for the emergency transport and treatment of our budgies on Friday/Saturday.

To Adrienne Bennett for setting up the go fund me, thank you so much for recognising that an event like this is going to hit us hard financially.

And to each and everyone one of you who have supported the go fund me, thank you from the bottom of my heart, I know it's a hard time for everyone at the moment.

Thank you for all your kind words of support, In the late hours of the night, I have layed in bed reading your comments and they have given me the will power to get up and carry on, because right now all I really want to do is curl up and cry and pretend none of this is happening.

Keep on, keeping on.

BUSHFIRE UPDATE (by Mel Vincent)
AviRescue recently moved to Beaufort, which is currently dealing with a Bushfire Event. Jasmine (who runs AviRescue) is currently actively involved with events as they unfold and can't update social media easily.
Firstly, all the birds and other animals that normally reside at AviRescue are SAFE. The rescue was evacuated on Thursday. All the animals are all either in veterinary care as required, or currently in foster care with Works For Birds, Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue and other carers/local rescues.
The rescue itself has survived the fire and is no longer under immediate threat. The current situation is that wildlife rescues to the North of AviRescue are in danger. They have had to evacuate animals and are currently making use of the AviRescue enclosures, while the AviRescue animals remain in care elsewhere.
Jasmine is currently working closely with the CFA, wildlife rescuers and relevant authorities to triage and help wildlife as it comes in from the firegrounds or from the public.
As you can imagine, this is an active situation that is constantly evolving.
We would like to thank everyone for their offers of support and help. It is appreciated more than you will ever know. This has been an incredibly stressful and (at times) terrifying event.
A Go Fund Me has been set up by Adrienne Bennett to help the rescue with its obviously elevated costs and needs. This money will get to Jasmine. It is the only go fund me that has been authorised by Jasmine/AviRescue. This is the link to that if you would like to help:

Hey everyone, As many of our Melbourne bird community would have… Adrienne Bennett needs your support for Avirescue emergency funds after evacuating fires

*UPDATE*
Mel from Bird Vet Melbourne came and took them directly into the clinic after hours.
I cannot thank her enough!

This is what backyard breeders sell to pet shops!
Next time you think buying from a petshop is better than a breeder or visa versa, THINK AGAIN!
There are still 8 unhealthy cockatiels I am trying to get out of there, it was heart breaking leaving them behind.
The 3 worst ones are now in safe hands.

ADOPT DONT SHOP!

Short term foster carer needed in SE Melb, please call on 0425722802

Will be required to transport to & from Burwood Bird & Animal Hospital.
Due to the symptoms of these birds, the person cannot be immune compromised and must be in good health.
The birds will require space away from other animals.
They will only require food & water to be replaced and transport to the vet for treatment.
Small cage required.

We have a very special guest staying with us at the moment, This is Loki and on the weekend he lost his home and his fur brothers and sisters to fire.

I have written this post over and over trying to find the right words but I just can't seem to find them.

While my cousins Brian & Jacqui come to terms with the devastating loss of their families home and other pets, I am doing what I can to muster support for them... Although little Loki is of the fur type it's seemed only appropriate to be the one to offer to care for him while he recovers from his burns.

While Loki escaped with his life and is safe here with me now, his family was left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

I am seeking both financial and words of support for this animal loving family.
They have been struck with the cruellest of blows as their puppers were everything to them.

I have included the go fund me link in the comments if you are able to assist and your kind words will also be shared with them.

Hi Everyone, We are still alive!
Our Narre Warren property has sold and we have been busy moving our belongings and the Rescue to our temporary property in Beaufort.
It has been a long and stressful process,
emotions are running high as we manage to settle our children into their new schools and get to know our new community.
We've managed to get our medium/ large outdoor aviary set up, we've upgraded the existing chicken coop and welcomed 7 rescued Isa Browns to the family. Cujo is loving his new friends!
Our pigeon loft is 3/4 done and the small bird aviary being prepared to move this week.
We've also welcomed Kiera our Maremma X Sarplaninac Guardian Dog who is currently learning the ropes.

We will be taking a break tomorrow to attend the 3rd Annual Bird Lovers Expo & hope to see all our friends there!

We are selling our Large Play Table, as you can see, our birds have had a lot of fun on it but there is still a lot of good use to be had.
The trims can be changed very easily if you'd like to spruce it up.
It's currently set up for big birds, but smaller branches can easily be added.
We are hoping to get $100 for it and for it to be collected from Narre Warren on either Thursday or Friday.
The measurements are 2.4m x 1.2m
The height is 78cm.
The legs unscrew and the top parts also detach. I I have numbered the branches and marked where they go on the table for easy re assembly.

Pleeease jump on the link and make a submission, it will only take a few minutes!
A few minutes to save the lives of these innocent birds from just a touch of your screen.
Dont let the cruelty continue!

We support an end to duck and quail shooting in Victoria. Our native birds need protection, not to be shot from the sky.

Submissions are currently open to have your say on ending this brutal ‘sport’ forever. But it requires as many people as possible to make submissions and the close on Monday.

Please take the time to write something, even if it’s just a paragraph on why duck shooting should end. You don’t need to live in Victoria or even Australia to do one.

Submission guide:

THANK YOU! to everyone who came to see us at The Pet Show on the weekend, we had a blast discussing all things birds with you.

A special thanks goes out to our exhibit sponsors Meekor, Dart Newborn Photography, Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic & Bird Vet Melbourne. We couldn't have done it without you!

Extra big loves to our feathered babies for being so friendly, patient and cute. It was clear by their behaviour that the training and socialization that they receive on a regular basis really does help birds to adjust to a wide variety of situations. They were total superstars!

Also the biggest thank you to our Volunteers, It took many late nights and long days to prepare and then the crazy non stop rush of people on the weekend left us all completely exhausted but we made it and we did a fantastic job on educating the public.
I couldn't be more proud x
