πΌπΎ Is your furry friend feeling a little scratchy this season? As we welcome sunny days and blooming flowers, many pets experience seasonal allergies too! Just like us, they can suffer from itchy skin and discomfort. Keep their tails wagging by checking in with your vet for the best care!
Commonly, dogs are affected in areas such as their ears, belly, paws, and underarms. Unlike humans who may suffer from respiratory issues like hay fever, dogs typically manifest their allergies through skin irritation. Itβs essential to take note of when your pet's discomfort could warrant a visit to the veterinarian.
Look out for specific warning signs: a foul odor emanating from the skin or ears could indicate an infection, while frequent head shaking and unusual noises when touching the ears might suggest irritation. Additionally, the appearance of small lumps, scabs, or patches of hair loss can signal deeper issues requiring professional evaluation. If your dog canβt seem to find relief from constant scratching, it may significantly impact their well-being.

Brushing your pets teeth!! Today Dr Louise is demonstrating the best way to teach your dog or cat to have their teeth brushed. This can be a daunting task for some owners but is the best way to keep your pets teeth pearly white! Remember to start this in a comfortable and stress free space for both you and your pet! How do you go brushing your pets teeth? We would love to know!
Brushing your cats!!! Today Dr Louise will demonstrate the best technique on how to brush your cat. Brushing your cats coat is important as it helps to remove dirt and dead hairs from their coat, reducing the risk of hairballs and matts, as well as keeping their coat shiny and healthy! It is also a great bonding activity for you and your feline friend! Isabelle is very good for our little demonstration as she loves getting a good massage with the brush. If you struggle with brushing your cat at home and would like some advice, please send us a facebook message or comment below - we would love to help!
Did you know dogs have an amazing sense of smell? So amazing in fact that they have up to 300 million olfactory receptors compared to humans only 5 million. One eighth of a dogβs brain is dedicated to interpreting smells. Studies show that allowing dogs to sniff results in lower pulse rates, feel calmer and helps to release dopamine (the feel-good hormone).
We can encourage our poochie friends to use their amazing noses with:
β’ Sniffy walks - allowing your dog to walk at their own pace, sniff as many things as they want, for as long as they want.
β’ Sniffy boxes or sniffy treasure hunt - creating a box or a course in your home or backyard with interesting things to find and sniff. This is great for dogs that donβt enjoy been out of the house or even on days its too hot to get out and about.
β’ Nose-work classes β special classes where your dog searches for favourite food or toy rewards hidden in different environments and learning new search skills.
Dental health month - Dental foods
Did you know there are special foods available to help keep your pets' teeth clean and avoid the need for a dental procedure under anaesthetic? Both Hills T/D and Royal Canin Dental foods are available for both cats and dogs and are nutritionally balanced complete diets. The larger kibble size and structure of the food helps keep teeth clean with every crunch.
πΎ Ever wonder what goes on after your pet is dropped off at the clinic? πΎ
In this video we follow Pip πΆ who came in for a dental procedure.

Did you know we treat a lot of rabbit patients here at Petstock Vet Lilydale? π°
Our vets and nurses are very knowledgeable in all things rabbit related! We are especially lucky to have our locum vet Dr Louise Pierce work with us every Wednesday, who has a special interest in rabbits and is our rabbit expert!
Below is a video of our adorable rabbit patients who were in for their desexing surgery recently. We place an IV catheter in all our rabbit patients having surgery (yes! into their tiny veins!), and oxygen and anaesthetic gas is delivered to them through an endotracheal tube (breathing tube). We also stock Oxbow critical care and oxbow pellets!
BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATION - Coronavirus lockdowns have not just been difficult for us - they have been hard for our pets as well.
We have noticed far more dogs with behavioural problems recently and feel that the unusual conditions in the past two years have been a major contributing factor.
Separation anxiety problems have increased as some pets are having to deal with owners being away from home for work for the first time in their lives, and some dogs having issues coping with visitors to the home or are reacting aggressively to other dogs they meet on walks.
We are here to help. We offer one hour behavioural consultations that enable us to discuss management options in depth.
Currently these are being done via a telemedicine platform.
If you are interested in booking in a behaviour consult, or have further questions, please call the clinic on 03 9735 4360.
RENAL DISEASE
If your pet is diagnosed with renal disease it means their kidneys are not working properly. The kidneys play an important role in cleaning the blood and maintaining hydration. If the decline in renal (kidney) function is gradual and permanent we label it chronic renal failure. This is a commonly diagnosed condition in older cats.
The kidneys have a large functional reserve and so illness is not seen with chronic renal failure until over 75% of function has been lost.
Signs of chronic renal failure include - increased thirst and urination, weight loss, reduced appetite, lethargy, vomiting and bad breath.
To diagnose renal disease a blood test and a urinalysis are performed. For some pets we recommend an ultrasound and potentially xrays to further examine the kidneys.
Treatment of chronic renal failure involves feeding a special diet and, if needed, giving medications to control blood pressure and protein loss into the urine. With careful management some pets can have months or years of good quality life ahead after being diagnosed with chronic renal disease.
PRE GENERAL ANAESTHETIC BLOOD TESTSπ
If your pet is coming in to have a sedation or anaesthetic with us we will always recommend a pre-anaesthetic blood test. This allows us to check your pet's health in a more thorough way than can be done by a physical examination alone.
Sometimes kidney and liver problems are present which could affect how your pet responds to the anaesthetic.
Ruling these out is just one of the steps we take to make sure every anaesthetic is as safe as possible. Fortunately at PETstock Vet Lilydale we have an in-clinic blood analysis machine so we can run pre-anaesthetic blood tests on the same day as the procedure, making these blood tests convenient as well as useful.
