It’s not surprising but still disappointing to read these stories. Every single breed of dog has been bred for a purpose. That purpose will determine temperament. Anyone looking to add a dog to their family MUST first, before anything, decide on the ideal temperament then add other criteria like size, coat etc to whittle down the list of potentially suitable breeds. Starting with the ‘look’ first and sometimes solely can only end in tears.

An animal sanctuary is receiving up to five phone calls a day from dog owners asking, 'Can you take my Maremma?' as they find the bundles of fluff become large dogs needing lots of room and discipline.

WHAT COLOURS DO DOGS SEE?
Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not colour blind.

A dog’s visual world is certainly not as vibrantly colourful as ours, but they do see a range of yellow, grey and blue shades and have better night and peripheral vision than we do.

Colour is interpreted and discerned by nerve cells in the eyes. The retina has two main types of cells called rods, which detect light levels and motion and cones which differentiate colour.

A human’s eyes have three types of cones which can identify combinations of red, blue, and green.

Dogs have only two types of cones that are only able to discern shades of blue, yellow and grey – this perception of colour is called dichromatic vision.

An ophthalmology professor at the University of Washington discovered that dogs could see blues and yellows but not reds and greens. This information would have been confirmed by anatomical investigation of a dog’s eye.

It would make more sense if manufacturers of dog toys would take a dog’s colour spectrum into account when producing dog toys.

Toys are usually made to visually appeal to people, not dogs.

Shades of yellow, grey or blue are far more appealing to your dog than a bright shade of red or another colour.

A Scottie club in Sth Wales put together some pointers about ‘show etiquette’ which we hope will help you.

🌼Always ask before you pet a dog. The handlers will have spent a lot of time and energy grooming their dogs for the show. Never go up and just pet a dog. Always ask first.

🌼Wait until handlers have finished an event before asking questions. Before the show, they are focusing on their dog and getting ready for their turn in the ring.

🌼Turn off or silence your mobile phone. It is a distraction to the dogs and handlers.

🌼Do not lean over the rings or talk to handlers when they are in the ring showing.

🌼Do you have small children with you? Don’t let them run up to dogs or stick their fingers and hands into crates or exercise pens. Also, it’s best to leave pram in the car. Prams can place a child’s face at the same level as unfamiliar dogs’ faces. Plus, a pram can accidentally run over lots of dogs’ tails. Be careful where you step so you don’t step on feet, noses or tails!

🌼Keep food away from the ring. It is a distraction to the dogs.

🌼Keep spectator dogs under control at all times. Whilst the show is underway ensure that all spectators dogs not crated are not a distraction to those in the ring.

🌼And most importantly! Enjoy the show!

🦮In our final look at the Scottish Terrier Breed Standard, we will consider the term ‘Fit for Function’.

🐕‍🦺The earliest breed standards date back to the 19th century, when different 'types' or breeds of dog were being developed. The early breeders were interested in defining characteristics of their dogs and they met to discuss and describe what they thought were desirable features in their breeds.

🦮It is important to remember that in those days all dogs were bred with a function in mind, i.e.: Terriers were bred to go to ground, to flush out game or kill vermin. So form and function were inter-related: the shape, size and temperament of a dog equipped them for their role in life.

🐕‍🦺The requirements of the Scottish Terrier Breed Standard are based on features which would be an advantage to a working terrier, as the Scottish Terrier was originally bred to be. As a sporting dog, with an instinct to hunt and kill it’s standard reflects the characteristics required to carry out this function.

🦮Deep set eyes are protected by their size and placement and small neat ears less vulnerable to damage than larger ones.

🐕‍🦺Low in stature to aid him going to ground and strong forelegs with firm well-knit feet to aid in digging. Thick rooted tail for his owner to pull him back from a hole of burrow.

🦮Despite the change in society, and the change in the role of dogs, the breed standards still reflect the reasons why the breed came into being. Form, function and fitness for purpose are key features in 'breed standard speak'.

🐕‍🦺The wording in some standards reminds us of the origins and functions of the breeds and of a very different lifestyle. Words like 'hardy', 'sturdy', 'workmanlike', 'active', 'speed' and 'courage' still litter the standards and they demonstrate the heritage and origins of the breeds, and the same desire for fitness of purpose still exists today: 'fit for function: fit for life'.
