🐦✨ Some of our followers may not have seen a bird being crop fed before, so we thought we would upload this video of Dr. Ruth from Bird Vet Melbourne in action this morning as she crop feeds Olly the rescue pigeon to assist on his road to recovery.

❤️‍🩹 Every bit of care and attention makes a huge difference.

(Please do not attempt to crop feed a bird without experience, if done incorrectly you can aspirate the bird. )

Someone’s feeling very comfortable in his hospital cage while he recovers from a very bad case of string foot.

The little one has a selection of pigeon food, G9Grit by the Australian Pigeon Company which is a blend of 9 different grits, hard and soft grits, minerals and trace elements including calcium, iodine and iron and Soluvite D in the water to give him a vitamin boost considering he was very underweight.

He also has a mirror to keep him company. He’s been cooing at himself on and off throughout the morning. 🥹

UPDATE: Unfortunately the baby had passed away on arrival. 🌈

🚨 RESCUE IN PROGRESS 9:24pm

Pigeon Rescue Melbourne reached out to the network of rescuers and carers for someone to assist a nestling spotted dove that had fallen from a nest likely due to the recent winds. Doves are notorious for building very bad nests. 🪹

We reached out to a wonderful carer we know is experienced in raising spotted dove nestlings and we organised a Pet Uber to take the baby and the finder immediately to the carer.

The baby is currently on route and will be arriving to safety very soon.

It takes a village and we are glad to be able to play a small part the story. 🙏

🚨Unfortunately the Pigeon Rescue Melbourne shelter in Moe has had their pigeon aviary come down in the strong winds last night. Thankfully all birds are accounted for due some quick thinking to take them out and put them safely in a smaller aviary overnight and thank goodness they did!

When they went to check this morning, the whole aviary had come down in the storm. ⛈️

✅ If you are able to donate or share it would be very much appreciated as Pigeon Rescue Melbourne does not receive regular donations and is self funded.

Their network of volunteers is responsible for hundreds of rescues throughout the year and the Moe shelter is a vital part of intake.

Please see post below with details on how to donate 👇 Thankyou 🙏

Today was a busy one……..

On Sunday evening Pigeon Rescue Melbourne put the call out if anyone could go to YOMG to catch and destring a pigeon that had been hanging around the restaurant for 2 weeks! It was all alone with no flock in sight, visiting the store each day for food and waiting at the door for them to open each morning. 🥹

The birds feet were completely tangled in human hair. So much so that it had cut off the circulation to its feet and they were so swollen that the hair was completely embedded in the foot.

Unfortunately the bird wasn’t there when we arrived last night, BUT we caught it today and got to work removing the hair this evening. We are happy to report all the hair has been removed and we will now start the process of assisting the bird to recover with some extra TLC to take down the inflammation and avoid infection.

Upon catching the bird we also realised it was covered in cooking oil, so this little one will also be getting a bath in the coming days. 🛁

Thankyou to the manager of the YOMG store who reached out for help.🙏

Today we helped transport these 2 teeny tiny spotted doves to the wonderful people at G’Day Birdie Sanctuary. They lost their home when some trees were removed at a golf course today.

Thankfully the people called Pigeon Rescue Melbourne and Pigeon Rescue Support Inc stepped in to help with transport. 🚙 Now these babies are safe.

And so baby bird season begins! 🐣

Our first two bubs for the season are these two tiny spotted doves, who’ve come from a golf course in Frankston. This one was a team effort - a massive thank you to Pigeon Rescue Melbourne and Pigeon Rescue Support Inc for helping with transport.

Baby pigeons and doves require specialised care and feeding methods. They eat differently to most other birds and are therefore unfortunately easy to aspirate - for this reason, it’s important to not offer any food or water to babies this small. If you can’t reunite them with their parents, it’s best to instead just keep them warm and safe until you can find an experienced carer.

These two are a bit touch-and-go at the moment, but for now they’re snuggled together in the brooder and have taken a crop feed well.

Fingers crossed, little bubbas 🐦

Our first offical job as “Pigeon Rescue Support Inc” was to collect a free aviary from marketplace in Nunawading and transport it to Moe to one of the Pigeon Rescue Melbourne Shelters to give them some much needed room to house more birds in need.

We headed off at 7:30 this morning, the van packed up with the aviary and a bag of 20kg pigeon food and we started our journey!

Half way through our drive, we noticed a bush rat in the middle of the road and a Raven picking at his little body. We stopped the car and scooped him up gave him a quick assessment and noticed some blood coming from a wound in his mouth. He was also very disorientated so he drove the rest of the way to Moe with us.

We unloaded the aviary at the Pigeon Rescue Shelter and then headed off to Latrobe Veterinary Hospital. The staff there were amazingly helpful and popped the little one in the incubator awaiting assessment. Fingers crossed he makes it! And so began the 1.5 hour journey home.
