Super proud of our boy Simba for his efforts this week...his new weight is 5.93kg!

As well as calorie restriction, Simba is also exercising much more as he chases us around for food in the afternoon.

We have found that Simba is also more keen to play with his toys and scratching post... and that is key! Once weight loss begins, energy levels and mood improve perpetuating further weight loss...though he has become more hangry πŸ˜‚

Tick alert!

Is your pet up to date with their tick prevention?

Do you know how to recognise a tick?

Do you know the signs to watch out for?

These little critters may be small, but each year they kill many dogs and cats through their toxin.

Common signs of tick toxicity include:

- Weakness, usually in the hind linbs first
- Vomiting or regurgitation
- Change in voice
- Difficulty breathing with a classic "grunt" on exhalation.
- Inability to blink

Ticks can hide anywhere on your pet but are often found close to the head. They may be mistaken for lumps or ni***es and vice versa.

We are spoiled for choice with preventative options and it is critical that your pet stays up to date to keep them safe. But no matter what prevention you choose, always check your pet over for ticks, especially after spending time in the bush.

If you find a tick on your pet, it is important to remove it as soon as possible, and to have your pet checked by a vet if they are showing any signs, no matter how mild.

Ticks kill pets, please contact our friendly team for recommendations or advice on which preventative may be best for your pet, and practice finding ticks on our tick dog in reception, Spot.

Happy Friday everyone!

To end the week, we got to enjoy a fun first. Dr K's Dad is a super handyman and has been working hard building us a mobile hydraulic lift table to save our backs whilst working with bigger dogs. πŸ€“

Today Reg put the table through its paces for the first time when he visited for sedation and x-ray. Without straining our backs, we were able to complete the entire procedure once he had been sedated.

We are so grateful to our resident handyman and problem solver for his hard work and for making our lives (and jobs) so much easier!

Now we need to think up his next project πŸ˜‚

Introducing our New Year's furry fat-blaster program!

Even with vets and nurses looking after him, our clinic cat Simba is a little round around the middle!

He may tell you he's starving, but the truth is he is always succeeding in wheedling tid bits of chicken, cheese and other delicacies!

He's topped the scales at 6.23kg, and his ideal body weight is approximately 5.5kg. As a cat who had both his hip joints surgically removed, keeping him light on his feet is critically important to reduce the impact on his other joints.

So Simba invites you to follow his weight loss journey, and if your pet would like to join him, they will be making a positive step towards a healthier and happier life. Obesity contributes to inflammation and increases the risk of many diseases, including cancer in our pets.

To kick start his weight loss we have:
- cut out all treats
- marked a measuring cup so he gets consistent portion sizes
- encouraged him to get more active through play.

We will be sharing his progress and other tips to help your pet achieve their perfect weight!

Because team photos have been a challenge to coordinate, we've found another way to introduce your Nelson Bay Vet clinical team members, including our chief overlord and executive director, Simba!

In addition, we have the lovely Shan who does so much behind the scenes to keep our tech and website running smoothly, and our fabulous resident handyman Warren who is always helping us to improve our facilities, innovate new ways of solving problems and fixing everything imaginable! Jordan from Future Tech E&C Mobile Computer Repairs has also been an invaluable resource for us this year in solving our pesky printer problems!

We are also grateful to our lovely locum vets and our fabulous new locum nurse, Meg. Plus our wonderful work placement students Alisha and Brittany for their hard work - we are so proud of how you've grown in confidence and skill!

We are very blessed to have a team united with common vision and values, and are equipped with so much support in growth and development by Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business, Harmonise HR and Uplift Consultancy .

We are also so grateful to Barkers In Balance for supporting us with a fabulous puppy preschool and dog training support.

So excited to see what the future holds as we continue to grow and develop as a team in the coming year.

Hot weather alert ⚠️ a friendly reminder to keep your pets inside today β˜€οΈ

As temperatures soar, keep your beloved pet safe by leaving them indoors and ensuring they have access to fresh water at all times. This applies to ALL pets, including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and pet rodents.

Heat stroke can be a life-threatening condition which can cause life-long damage to internal organs. The time between showing signs of heat stroke and becoming critical is a short window.

Signs of heat stroke include:
- lethargy
- excessive panting and/or difficulty breathing
- vomiting or drooling
- collapse
- dark red or purple gums and tongue

All breeds are at risk of heat stroke but brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs and pugs are at higher risk. Their short face/snout reduces their ability to effectively dissipate heat through panting. Extra care needs to be taken on hot or humid weather like today.

If your pet is showing any of the above signs, contact SASH Emergency 24/7.

At 12 weeks old, Lilah is nearly half Chloe's size already!

This beautiful girl visited for her 12 week vaccination today and received so many cuddles and kisses, not to mention the treats! πŸ₯°

Lilah was so excited and happy to visit us, as she already had such a positive experience in the clinic attending Barkers In Balance puppy preschool. Attending puppy preschool at a veterinary practice is a wonderful way of teaching puppies that vet clinics can be a fun and rewarding place to be, setting them up for a lifetime of Fear Free care. We are so grateful to partner with such a dedicated and knowledge dog trainer for our precious puppies!

Looking forward to seeing you next time Lilah!

Does your pet experience storm phobia? β›ˆ

Noise and storm phobia are problems experienced commonly by dogs, and when severe can lead to inadvertent injury or misadventure as they frantically seek to escape the scary experience.

As dogs enter the 'sympathetic state' (fight, flight, freeze) and experience a rush of adrenaline, they are unable to learn or respond as they otherwise would when calm.

Signs of storm phobia include:
⚑️ Pacing and restlessness
⚑️ Shaking
⚑️ Hiding (often under beds, in bathrooms/laundries)
⚑️ Panting
⚑️ Vocalising
⚑️ Destructive behaviour
⚑️ Attempts to escape/run away - often successfully

Ways that you can help your dog to manage their fear during a storm include:
πŸ‘‰Providing a safe, secure place for them to hide if they are seeking to hide. A crate, kennel, or the bathroom may be the safest place for them to go. Dogs often seek ceramic tiles as the ceramic can help diffuse static electricity caught in their coat.
πŸ‘‰Remaining calm, and offering comfort if needed
πŸ‘‰Using aids such as a Thundershirt, pheromone sprays/collars, diffusing pure essential oils (such as lavender, frankincense, chamomile)
πŸ‘‰Playing calming classical music.

To prepare for this storm season, other ways you can protect your dog include:
πŸ‘‰ Ensuring all windows, doors and fences on the property are secure
πŸ‘‰Ensuring that your dog's microchip details are up to date in the event they do escape.
πŸ‘‰Book a consult with us to discuss whether some situational medication may be helpful to alleviate the panic your dog experiences during storms. We can also discuss training strategies for desensitising your dog to scary noises and helping them learn how to relax. 😌

Do you have other tips for keeping pets calm during a storm?

Technical Tools Trivia...

What am I?

What am I used for?

Well done, this is a dental xray generator! This gets a work out in our clinic as every patient who has dental work has radiographs taken. Dental radiographs are essential in identifying disease under the gumline that we cannot see any other way. This machine is handheld, and requires some "knack" in finding just the right angles and just the right distance to obtain the best images. Although a much more focused beam than our fixed xray generator, we still protect ourselves with lead aprons and thyroid shields to minimise our exposure to radiation.

One of the most common procedures carried out in a veterinary clinic is dental procedures. These are routine surgeries that help to treat and prevent dental disease in our fur friends.

Miss Luna visited us to have her teeth cleaned and diseased teeth removed and was feeling refreshed and ready to flaunt her pearly whites afterwards!

Dental disease is very common and especially pronounced in animals with smaller mouths just like Luna.

It is vital to ensure your pets are getting appropriate dental prevention, which can include brushing the teeth daily, dental chews/diets and oral supplements. These strategies may reduce the number of dental procedures required throughout their life.

How many of you do brush your pets' teeth? 🦷
