‼️Temporary Closure‼️
Palmerston Vet Hospital

To our amazing clients, the first week of July, Monday 1/07 until Monday 8/07, Palmerston vets will be temporarily closed. This is due to our participation in the RSPCA & City Of Darwin desexing clinic, requiring more staff members to help out 😊 Although we will have a nurse available for food and worming collection, Thursday 4th July from 2pm until 6pm. For any other enquiries or medication requests, please contact our sister clinic, Parap Veterinary Hospital 8981 9767.

Thank you for patience ❤️🐾

🎆Cracker night 2024🎆

Monday 1st July is Territory Day! While we all love the fireworks and celebrations, our pets usually disagree. They can become stressed and anxious because of the loud noises and vibrations from the fireworks, which can lead to so many of them going missing or even injuring themselves in the process.

HOW TO PREPARE 🧐

Before the day -
- CHECK YOUR FENCING⛓️ Make any repairs necessary before cracker night so they have no way to escape.
- MICROCHIP 🔎 Make sure they are microchipped/ ensure your microchip details are up to date. That way if they do get out, they can be returned.
- ID 🪪 Make sure they have pet ID tags/collars and all your info is up to date.
- MEDS 💊 If your animal is normally very anxious or had issues in the past with cracker night, consider booking in to see us ASAP. Sedation medication is NOT over the counter and we do require to see them prior to dispensing this. Unless we have seen them in the last 6 month for anxiety or other sedation. We would then be able to dispense it to be collected.

On the day
- Make a comfy safe space for both your dogs and cats to be able to hide and relax during the evening
- Keep them inside and away from any fireworks.
- Close doors, windows and curtains to lessen the noise.
- Turn on your TV/ music as a distraction.
- Keep them occupied using toys and treats.
- Avoid walking them on the day, as people tend to start letting fireworks off early.
- Act as you usually would with them, avoid fussing too much over them as any change in your behaviour will show them something is wrong. This can further stress them out, on an already crazy night ahead.
- Avoid any sort of punishment/shouting if they are frightened. Allow them to hide if they need, and comfort them if they seek you out. ❤️

Lastly please 🙏🏼 contact us if you know your fur baby needs medication to stay relaxed and safe for cracker night. Do not leave it until the last minute, as all vets are usually very busy.

Have a happy and safe Territory day! ❤️💥

RSPCA Desexing Day 🐾❤️

Today we’ve had five beautiful kittens in for desexing, microchipping and vaccinations. Desexing is super important for our feline friends as it stops overbreeding which can lead to so many of them going without homes or proper care 🐈

These gorgeous babies have been in foster care for the last couple of months through RSPCA Northern Territory . All will be available for adoption very soon!
If you’re looking for a new member of the family please contact RSPCA 🥰

Chocolate is in abundance this time of year – but this could be dangerous for your dog!

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which can be harmful to dogs if ingested - the darker the chocolate (ie. 99% cocoa), the more toxic. Whilst white chocolate does not contain these substances, it can still cause tummy upset from the fat and sugar.

The symptoms of toxicity from chocolate are:
 Vomiting
 Diarrhea
 Hyperactivity
 Tremors
 Seizures
 Racing heart rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms
 Death in severe cases

If your dog has eaten chocolate, it is important to contact a vet straight away, with information on hand about the type of chocolate and the amount consumed. If your dog has eaten a toxic dose, they may need treatment to get the chocolate out of their system.
