If you travel with your dog in the red areas of Australia, you need to take precautions against the potentially fatal disease, Ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne disease. The current advice is to only use topical (not oral) tick repellents in the form of a collar (Seresto replaced 4-monthly) or a spot-on (Advantix applied monthly). Frequent checking for and removal of attached ticks is also important. Treatment is possible from your veterinarian if started early enough, but this may be difficult in remote areas where the disease is endemic, so far better to prevent tick bites.

The spring/summer grass seed season is upon us once again so take all necessary precautions to avoid your dog being a victim of these nasties. The best course of action is to not allow your dog to have access to any weedy areas, even on an unkept verge etc. If your dog suddenly starts shaking its head, violently sneezing or shows red swellings between their toes, you should get it checked out asap for the presence of painful grass seeds before they cause too much damage.
