Today we visited the WA Museum Boola Bardip to health check their live animal collection. We visit the museum every 4-6 months to examine Bobby the bobtail, Maggie the Stimpson’s Python, the Green Tree Frogs and Motorbike Frogs as well as some native fish. Boola Bardip is now home to 3 Northern Spiny-Tailed Geckos (who are very cute but were too shy to have their photos taken. All the animals were in very healthy condition and the animal husbandry gold standard.

We saw this uniquely Australian animal yesterday. Their nose is sometimes called a beak, they have a pouch like a kangaroo, lay eggs like a reptile and are covered in spines (apart from their underside, their faces and legs) The shorted billed echidna is native to Australia and has many other quirky qualities.

Echidnas are egg-laying mammals without ni***es. They have the lowest body temperature of any mammal. Their spines are modified hairs. At the end of their long thin snouts, echidnas have tiny mouths, with no teeth. Instead they have long, sticky tongues to feed on ants, termites, worms, and insect larvae. Echidna's have an electroreceptive system comprised of up to 2,000 electroreceptors on their snouts.

They roll up into a compact spikey ball when they feel threatened or scared. This is a great defense mechanism. We gave this lovely lady a light sedative to allow us to examine her properly for injuries and ensure she stayed still for x-rays. How amazing do those spines look on x-ray! The really are unique and beautiful creatures.

Cariad had his prosthetic ramp removed on Monday. He was very brave, this has been his 3rd anaesthetic in 2 weeks. Once he was safely asleep, the pin heads inside his lower beak were carefully clipped off, then a dental drill was used to cut through the acrylic so it could simply be lifted off. The tiny holes from the pins in his lower beak will heal over quickly. His lower beak was carefully filed to encourage his top beak to sit over his lower beak and he has been prescribed exercise to encourage him to stretch his upper beak. We have on good authority from Macaws And More that he is up for the challenge and Linda is continuing to invent new challenges for him. We are so thankful to Brett from Digident Laboratory for his expertise. This is a fantastic result.

Does your pet have bad breath? It might be time for a dental check up!
Bad breath (or halitosis) is often one of the first signs of dental disease. Did you know that as many as 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years old have some form of dental disease? If left untreated, dental disease can lead to pain, tooth loss and infection.
Perth Pet Vet offer FREE dental checks with a registered veterinary nurse to ensure that your pets’ teeth are in tip-top shape. 🦷🐶🐱

Cariad is a beautiful baby blue and gold macaw who had a difficult start to life and has a big story to tell. You can read more about Cariad's story at Macaws And More . At about 3 weeks old it was noticed that her beak was starting to grow off centre.

Scissor beak refers to lateral deviation of the upper or lower beak. If detected early, mild scissor beak can be corrected by manually placing a counter force on the beak for several minutes 2–3 times daily. More severe defects may require placing a beak prosthetic.

There are two commonly used methods to help correct scissor beak. The pin and rubber band technique which involves placing a stainless steel pin horizontally through the base of the premaxilla (upper beak), a rubber band is then attached to a hook on the end of this pin, and then connected to a notch or hook in the tip of the beak. The rubber band provides constant tension to help correct the deviation.

The other technique involves the use of an acrylic ramp built onto the lower beak which then gently applies force to the beak when it closes and helps to guide the beak back to a central position.

There are pros and cons to either technique. Some dental acrylics are heavy and can be difficult to attach firmly to the beak. When deciding which approach to use for Cariad, Dr Toni was lucky to be able to consult with Brett from Digident Laboratory, a company that specializes in making human orthodontic equipment and prosthetics. Together they were able to come up with a prosthetic using a special superlight acrylic (used to make teeth/bite impressions) that is thin and easily mouldable. This material was also able to be drilled through allowing us to use tiny dental ball pins to anchor the prosthetic ramp in place. A huge benefit was that most of the shaping could be done whilst Cariad was awake, therefore shortening the time spent under anaesthesia as well as the ability to build onto this prosthetic ramp easily if and as needed.

We were super happy with the result. Although it may look cumbersome, it is super light. Cariad appears totally unbothered and is still able to feed as normal. As she is only 8 weeks old and has a lot of growing to do, we hope that in 2 weeks we can remove the prosthetic and have improved her beak alignment significantly.

One more sleep until the Easter Bunny comes! 🐰 🥚
When preparing for the great hunt please remember to hide those chocolate eggs where your pets can't find them! It's a good idea to keep count of the eggs you hide, to be sure they're all found and none are left temptingly hiding around! 😊

Tis the season ... of HOT CROSS BUNS!!!
Warm, toasty, buttery and delicious ... for us, but sadly the sultanas and raisins in them can be potentially fatal for cats and dogs.
Known to cause irreversible kidney failure in your furred friends, these are best kept well away from your beloved pets. As the toxicity level is unknown it is best to seek immediate medical attention if your pets is known to have ingested any amount of grapes, raisins or sultanas at all.

Though it may be tempting to offer your pets some of your sweet treats, it can be very harmful to them.
Theobromine one of the ingredients found in chocolate is toxic for most pets. It can affect your pet’s heart and nervous system, causing clinical signs like hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and even death if enough is ingested.
Remember that some pets are awesome finders too, so if you have an Easter egg hunt planned, please keep your animals away from the hunt, and count all of the eggs in your baskets before and after hiding and seeking them. Remind children not to give any chocolate to pets, or to leave the wrappers lying around. As the smell of the chocolate may be a little to enticing and this can cause other issues if the tin wrappers are ingested by your pets.
