A trained diabetes alert dog can detect changes in their handler’s blood sugar levels to avoid an impending hypoglycemic episode that they may not be aware of through their keen sense of smell and alert their handler through a series of tasks to avoid the episode that may cause coma or even death. This can happen as much as thirty minutes before a glucometer can detect the change. To date we have

trained and placed three dogs with three children with diabetes. You can meet these children under the “Meet the Kids/Meet the Dogs” link on our website. Families of children with diabetes bear 50% of the cost of training their dog. The remaining cost is borne by Sweet Charity. That’s why your participation matters so much. Each trained Diabetes Alert Dog is valued at $10,000. Sweet Charity and you, developing dogs that are Friends for Life. So many ways you can help us get trained dogs to kids with diabetes:
-Hold a fundraising event.
-Become a corporate donor.
-Become a recognized Sweet Charity supporter with monthly donations.
-Name a dog
-Support a Sweet Charity Fundraising Event

Hi everyone, it’s Tundra here! I love being a CAP doggie and supporting all the wonderful students, especially when they visit the library to learn about fire safety. 🚒 I was very happy to watch them practice stop, drop and roll. They did an amazing job! Stay safe out there, everyone! 🐾 🚒 ❤️

PSSD Mickey and his handler have been working together since he was a puppy. They worked together through the pandemic and now Mickey joins his handler at school, doctors appointments and events. Mickey has been a huge life saver for his family! 💜

Thank you to the Ontario Trillium Fund for their Resilient Communities Fund Grant of $48 500. Due to this money Sweet Charity was able to support students in schools this year through our Canine Ambassador program (CAP), create an online training program for our CAP program to expand to other communities and continue our Personal Support Service Dog program (PSSD).
