FIP update!

From Dr. Scott Weese.

Great news for Canadian vets, cat owners and cats: We now have legal access to treatments for FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), a disease that’s typically considered almost invariably fatal.

We have known for a few years that remdesivir, it’s close relative GS-441524, and, to a lesser degree, molnupiravir, can be highly effective drugs for FIP. Cure rates are really high, albeit with an expensive treatment.

The problem? Drug access.

None of these are licenced for animals in Canada.

The two licensed human drugs (remsidivir and molnupiravir) are technically able to be imported from their manufacturers via an Emergency Drug Release (EDR) but the manufacturers have not allowed that.

So, for the past few years, people have been purchasing and illegally importing black market drugs and treating their cats themselves (sometimes with some vet support, sometimes without. It’s a tough area for vets since we can’t recommend or give an illegal product but we want to provide supportive care).

Legally compounded remdesivir and GS-441524 have been available in Australia, the UK and South Africa, but we were not able to access those. However, working with Health Canada’s Veterinary Drug Directorate, we’ve been able to get their approval to import legally compounded versions of those drugs from the UK. Vets have to request permission to import the drug via an EDR every time they want to use it, so it has some logistical hassles, but it’s not a big deal. The drug isn’t cheap, but it’s probably cheaper than what I’m hearing most people are paying for illegal drug (that has no assurance of quality control or safety).
