We bought a small farm and we’re going to try to do some cool stuff with it

For now we mostly farm bugs and take pictures of the neighbours cows

Did you know a donkey diet is much different than a horse? It’s as simple as donkeys evolving in desert climates. They need more fibre and less protein. As much as 50-75% straw and the remainder hay or grass. This means that they unfortunately cannot be left to graze on lush green grass as they please or they will be high risk for obesity and health complications that come with it. It’s not uncommon to see donkeys living with horses that are overweight and in some cases even covered in weird lumpy fat pads simply because they ended up in a home where the owner assumed donkeys and horses were the same thing. If you’re keeping donkeys, try to keep them in a dry, or at least a pre-grazed, pen where their diets can be monitored and distributed correctly to ensure they maintain a healthy weight 🫏

Even our donkeys are looking a little pudgey these days but winter is just around the corner for us and they’ll be back on a mostly straw diet soon. That being said, we do offer them more hay to get through the -30°C to -40°C cold snaps

Even though he was super vigilant and had to do a bunch of hive splits to avoid exactly this, we still had a swarm try to make an escape 😬 thankfully I caught them in the act and we were able to collect them again successfully this evening 😎

Lemon’s second birthday theme: birthday suits 🦙

That’s right, the gang gang is nakey nakey. Once a year we have reset the alpacas back to factory settings or else their fibre will just continue to grow. While alpaca fibre has a long list of uses (and of course we want to harvest that) it’s also a huge must for the animals. Allowing alpacas to become overgrown can cause severe discomfort and potentially even put their health at risk. This year, we had the much needed and much appreciated help of Thomas from Mystical Moments Homestead. If you’re in northern BC and would like to have him come back next year, please feel free to reach out to me for his contact information because the more clients he can get up here, the more likely it is that we can get ourselves an excellent shearer that also works with camelids to keep all of us on his route 🤞

The bees are back!

This past winter was unfortunately quite hard on our bees. The mild temperatures fluctuating so fast and frequently between below freezing and above freezing caused a lot of condensation in our otherwise strong, healthy hives. Stephane had put a lot of effort into making all of our bees calm and easily manageable after a tangle with a super aggressive hive so it was just that more devastating to see them not make the winter.

Thankfully, not everyone had 100% losses and anyone that did survive winter got really strong and early starts so splitting hives has been a breeze this year. We have now picked up 3 nucs from the Sweetwater area and we have one more to be picked up on Tuesday from the Attachie area.

As a small hobby farm, we personally shoot for calm bees over highly productive if we have to choose. They’re just so much more enjoyable to work with like this and even when a hive isn’t insanely productive, you’re still getting more honey than you’ll know what to do with. So far, these bees have been a great fit and we look forward to working with them more! 🐝

Dandelion season is slowly coming to an end but the clover is SO close to blooming. Don’t be afraid to let your lawn grow out even just for a day or two of blooms for your neighbourhood pollinators 💕

Stephane came home with his very own horse today 🥰 forget hands, Dash is at least 100 feet tall. Quarter horse, three quarters giraffe. That, or I’m being a teensy bit dramatic because anything I’ve ever rode is 15.2 and under 😅

He’s a sweetie though, we think he’ll fit right in 💕

Happy National Donkey Day!

I brought you some quick donkey facts to celebrate 🎉

🫏 They’re not horses! Yes, they’re Equids but their evolution and anatomy requires much different care than a horse.
🫏 They cannot be left to their own devices on lush green grass. Donkeys are often kicked out to pasture like horses but their bodies are built for desert survival. They’re too efficient and often struggle with obesity related health problems.
🫏 They live longer than horses. A horse’s average life span is 25-30 years old while a donkey’s is 27-40 years.
🫏 Donkeys are big thinkers. Their intelligence is unfortunately mistaken for stubbornness most of the time but if you’ve spent any kind of time with donkeys and horses, you’ll know how much more creative you may have to get to convince a donkey than a horse to do something they’re unsure of.
🫏 You can breed donkeys and horses together! A male donkey bred to a female horse is called a Mule (like Agnes) and a male horse bred to a female donkey is called a Hinny (a bit more rare). Mules and Hinny’s are almost always infertile with only a few exceptions in recorded history.
🫏 They’re very loving creatures. Any people will purchase donkeys for predator protection for their herds based on the misconception that they fight fiercely but donkeys are still prey animals. Most aren’t born mean, they’ve just had minimal handling and a strong survival instinct.
🫏 They make great pack animals and can go places you’d never want to pack a horse. They’re build perfectly for rocky terrain and are far superior to horses when it comes to sure footedness. It’s not uncommon for people to ride or drive them as well!
🫏 B***o racing is a thing. There are several foot races in the US and France that are ran along side pack burro’s of all sizes. (Running with Sherman by Chrissy McDougall is a fantastic book on this if you’re interested)
🫏 I wrote all of this while being smothered by donkeys so it’s really all I’ve got for now and it’s about to end abruptly. But please, if you want to know more about donkeys, just ask in the comments!

My cow had a big ol’ calf that’s a bit behind on the whole learning to stand thing. This was his first feeding he was able to get through while remaining upright. His mom is also a bit wobbly from having such a big calf so she gets milked and that milk is fed to him via giant baby bottle. Both are recovering very well, they just need a few extra days of care before going back out to pasture 🥰 we just popped out for a visit and helped him get on his feet to strengthen his legs during this feeding but it’s my parents place and they’re doing all the actual work because Bovee Ranch is where the cows belong lol

We’re looking to bring another shearer into Northern BC! I’m talking the works: Shearing, feet, AND teeth! I was no showed by a shearer last year and saved by a wonderful one from New Zealand that was also unfortunately adamant about preferring to work on sheep over camelids 😅 This year, I have come across another shearer in Washington State that is unlike most, looking to expand North rather than South as he has family in Northern BC.

We were in brief contact last year when I was frantically looking for help on the Alpaca pages after being no showed to see what kind of interest there would be for another shearer in our area. It was hard to say last year as everything was in full swing but this year we want to get a head start and compile a list of potential clients to see if we can make our are worth his while! And guys, I really want our area to be worth his while because he’s also currently waiting on the last of his new equipment to show up for his zero waste fibre mill.

If you have alpacas, llamas, sheep, or goats that require shearing services in Northern BC, please send us a message and we can add you to the list of potential clients as well as send you his personal contact information. He does also have a page under Mystical Moments Homestead if you’d like to check it out. I’m personally not too keen on the idea of shearing them myself after seeing how fast and beautifully the pros do it 🦙
