Myth Busting Monday
We all enjoy fun in the sun with our four-legged family members. ๐ However, summer poses unique risks to your petโs health. Leaving pets in parked cars isnโt the only tragic mistake people make. ๐
Check out this #MythBustingMonday video from our friends at the SPCA Veterinary Hospital to learn real facts about summer safety. And make sure to let us know in the comments below if you have more myths for us to explore. โฌ๏ธ
By taking precautions to ensure your pet is cool and safe, youโll both enjoy a wonder-fur summer! ๐พ๐

Hot Car Experiment
โThe windows are open.โ โIโll park in the shade.โ โItโs windy and Iโll be quick.โ These are three of the most common excuses people give when they leave their pet in a hot vehicle. ๐
Special Constable Kevin Strooband, Deputy Chief Inspector at the Nova Scotia SPCA, locked himself in a car to demonstrate the dangers. ๐ฅ Even though the windows were cracked, the van was shaded by a tree AND there was a breezeโฆ the internal temperature skyrocketed to almost 45ยฐC within 20 minutes! ๐ฒ
Check out the full video for tips on what to look for AND what to do when you find an animal in distress. ๐พ Remember, friends don't make friends wait in hot cars.

Good luck, Kai!
When pets get adopted, we donโt say goodbye. We wish them good luck! ๐ฅฐ Thatโs because our biggest goal is to watch pets prance out with new families.
Every dog struts out of the shelter differently. ๐พ For Kai, one of the pups and dogs rescued from the wildfires in the Northwest Territories, her farewell included a nod to our staff and volunteers. ๐ถ It felt as if she was saying thank you to our amazing animal loving community.
It will continue to take time for the pups and dogs to decompress. But we hope to say โgood luckโ to all the NWT dogs soon. ๐
Cheers to new beginnings! ๐

UPDATE: Cindy Lou has been adopted!
We canโt believe that our sweet girl Cindy Lou is still here!! โค๏ธ๐ฅบ
Cindyโs FIRST birthday ๐ is coming up on January 10th, and her only birthday wish this year is to spend it in a loving forever home ๐
Cindy Lou has a LOT of energy, and will need an active home who is ready to do lots of training with her. She is a fast learner, so training should be a breeze!
Once approved, her adopter will need to show proof of being signed up for obedience training with Cindy Lou so she can learn to be the best girl!
Cindy Lou is a bit too much for small animals and cats, so a home without them would be best!
*Please note that sending in an application does not put a hold on the dog. In order to start the adoption process, please come to our shelter during our open hours to meet Cindy Lou!*

This is Clyde! ๐ถ To say that Clyde likes to play fetch is perhaps the understatement of the century. Thanks to the Paws & Support Program, Clyde can continue to do his favourite thing in the world in foster care while his owner is in the hospital. ๐ His owner is happy knowing Clyde is cared for. And Clyde is happy knowing that if he brings the flying circle back, the nice person will throw it againโฆ and againโฆ and again. ๐
We are sharing Clydeโs story to raise awareness about our Paws & Support Program. This program helps pet parents who face homelessness, hospitalization, or need safety. ๐

Ground Digging of the New North Nova SPCA
Jake the pupper deserves lots of treats for crushing his important job today. ๐พ Instead of a groundbreakingโฆ we had a ground digging to build the North Nova SPCA in Stellarton.
Our community is building this together. ๐ A local build team will create a shelter that will last. Families can bring pets to our social enterprise veterinary clinic for medical care. The community will be supported with a permanent animal enforcement office. โจ There will also be a thrift store creating another avenue to support the SPCA while keeping items out of landfills. Weโre big on second chances. ๐ฅฐ
As with all improvements, the first to benefit from our new facility are the hundreds of homeless pets and loving families in our community. With the limitations we face now, sick and injured pets are often forced to relocate for treatment. ๐ฟ
But with this new building, more local pets can โ and will โ stay here in Pictou County. ๐ There will be less travel time, costs, and stress for animals, and more opportunities to adopt for local families.
The design will overcome existing challenges and create more lifelong bonds between pets and people. ๐ It will be a warm and welcoming space, complete with resources to help keep more loving families together.

๐ถ105 days Artie has been with us.
You may just see a typical dog-human interaction, we see an amazing moment that took several weeks to happen. With tears in our eyes, there is nothing more that touches are hearts than seeing her slowly allow us in her bubble, accept our touch and be her safe place.
๐ถInside her nervous shell is a playful, silly, young girl who deserves all the love and patience that she has given us.
๐ถArtieโs story is not a happy one, presenting unbelievably shut down, she feared everyone, everything, and she sadly will continue to have a very long road ahead of her. She may never be fully healed, but we think the progress she has made so far has been pretty darn amazing to see each day. From barely being able to put a collar on her, having to carry her outside because she was too scared to walk, to her seeking us out for playtime has been a pretty rewarding transformation to witness!โค๏ธ
We expect potential adopters to understand that her journey is slow, and long but if they commit to her, they will develop an unbreakable bond. Just learning to exist in a home will be a struggle for her, and she will need space, patience and stability.
๐ถThis will not be a typical adoption, and we will require multiple meet and greets to make her as comfortable as realistically possible before she leaves us. A quiet home, with minimal visitors will be an important requirement.
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST & help our girl find her long overdue forever home! โค๏ธ
