The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. But there are some important and remarkable types of families: fosters. 🥰 Megan and Sarah aren’t only sisters but have been foster pawrents together for the last eight years. They have helped almost 50 doggos get their second chance. 🤩 They were inspired by others to foster, and they hope their story will be just as inspiriting.

Mallory has always been passionate about dogs. 🐾 It’s what led her to adopt, volunteer and start on a new career path to become a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant. For the last seven months as a volunteer, she used her initial studies to help dogs at the Dartmouth Shelter get much-needed enrichment. 💙 Now living in Ontario, she plans to continue to help local shelters in any capacity she can. Because her love for dogs knows no borders.

He enjoys playing with his toys and going for walks. He can be a bit reserved when meeting someone new, but it takes almost no time for him to love anyone he meets. He has a fairly calm nature and is always down for a cuddle session on the couch. It'll be impossible not to fall in love with a dog like him!

Just like the character, Thumper pounds his paw when he is excited. 🐾 But life wasn’t always like this. Getting petted used to be painful. Mary and Bill Potter were heartbroken when they lost their beloved dog Kane. 💔 Though they knew they would eventually adopt again, they didn’t see the 122-pound Cane Corso coming into their lives. 🐶 Caesar was the first dog Mary met as a new volunteer at the Kings SPCA. It was love at first walk, and after 87 days at the shelter, Caesar found his happily-ever-after. 💙

Hot Car Experiment

“The windows are open.” “I’ll park in the shade.” “It’s windy and I’ll be quick.” These are three of the most common excuses people give when they leave their pet in a hot vehicle. 🚗 Special Constable Kevin Strooband, Deputy Chief Inspector at the Nova Scotia SPCA, locked himself in a car to demonstrate the dangers. 🔥 Even though the windows were cracked, the van was shaded by a tree AND there was a breeze… the internal temperature skyrocketed to almost 45°C within 20 minutes! 😲 Check out the full video for tips on what to look for AND what to do when you find an animal in distress. 🐾 Remember, friends don't make friends wait in hot cars. *Note: While we appreciate your compassion and empathy, we ask that you refrain from any comments that include profanity or may be considered disrespectful in accordance with our social media policy.*

Every dog struts out of the shelter differently. 🐾 For Kai, one of the pups and dogs rescued from the wildfires in the Northwest Territories, her farewell included a nod to our staff and volunteers. 🐶 It felt as if she was saying thank you to our amazing animal loving community. It will continue to take time for the pups and dogs to decompress. But we hope to say “good luck” to all the NWT dogs soon. 💙 Cheers to new beginnings! 🎉

She is a fast learner, so training should be a breeze! Once approved, her adopter will need to show proof of being signed up for obedience training with Cindy Lou so she can learn to be the best girl! Cindy Lou is a bit too much for small animals and cats, so a home without them would be best! *Please note that sending in an application does not put a hold on the dog. This is Tiny Tim. 🐱 And he is just like the beloved and brave character in 𝘈 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘭. Faced with adversity, Tiny Tim’s optimistic outlook inspired everyone here at the SPCA. 🐾 Found as a stray kitten, Tiny Tim was only a few weeks old. Ground Digging of the New North Nova SPCA

Jake the pupper deserves lots of treats for crushing his important job today. 🐾 Instead of a groundbreaking… we had a ground digging to build the North Nova SPCA in Stellarton. Our community is building this together. 💞 A local build team will create a shelter that will last. Families can bring pets to our social enterprise veterinary clinic for medical care. The community will be supported with a permanent animal enforcement office. ✨ There will also be a thrift store creating another avenue to support the SPCA while keeping items out of landfills. We’re big on second chances. 🥰 As with all improvements, the first to benefit from our new facility are the hundreds of homeless pets and loving families in our community. With the limitations we face now, sick and injured pets are often forced to relocate for treatment. 😿 But with this new building, more local pets can – and will – stay here in Pictou County. 😍 There will be less travel time, costs, and stress for animals, and more opportunities to adopt for local families. The design will overcome existing challenges and create more lifelong bonds between pets and people. 🏠 It will be a warm and welcoming space, complete with resources to help keep more loving families together. Please Share ❤️ 🐶105 days Artie has been with us. You may just see a typical dog-human interaction, we see an amazing moment that took several weeks to happen. With tears in our eyes, there is nothing more that touches are hearts than seeing her slowly allow us in her bubble, accept our touch and be her safe place. 🐶Inside her nervous shell is a playful, silly, young girl who deserves all the love and patience that she has given us. 🐶Artie’s story is not a happy one, presenting unbelievably shut down, she feared everyone, everything, and she sadly will continue to have a very long road ahead of her. She may never be fully healed, but we think the progress she has made so far has been pretty darn amazing to see each day. From barely being able to put a collar on her, having to carry her outside because she was too scared to walk, to her seeking us out for playtime has been a pretty rewarding transformation to witness!❤️ We expect potential adopters to understand that her journey is slow, and long but if they commit to her, they will develop an unbreakable bond. Just learning to exist in a home will be a struggle for her, and she will need space, patience and stability. 🐶This will not be a typical adoption, and we will require multiple meet and greets to make her as comfortable as realistically possible before she leaves us. A quiet home, with minimal visitors will be an important requirement. Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
