🌞🐾 As temperatures soar, it's crucial to ensure our furry friends stay safe and cool! Here are some tips to protect your pets during this heat wave:

Hydration is Key: Keep their water bowls filled with fresh, cool water at all times. Consider adding ice cubes to keep it cooler longer.

Limit Exercise: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for walks and playtime in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler.

Provide Shade: Create shady spots in your yard or use umbrellas/tents when outdoors. Pets need a retreat from direct sunlight.

Never Leave in Cars: Even with windows cracked, cars can quickly become ovens in the heat. Leave your pets at home if you need to run errands.

Protect Paw Pads: Hot pavements can burn paw pads. Test surfaces with your hand before walks or opt for early morning or late evening walks when surfaces are cooler.

Cooling Options: Offer cooling mats, damp towels, or even a kiddie pool filled with shallow, cool water for your pets to lay in.

Grooming: Regular brushing helps prevent overheating and removes excess fur. However, don't shave your pet's coat too short as it can leave them vulnerable to sunburn.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting are signs of heatstroke. If you suspect it, cool your pet with damp towels and seek veterinary care immediately.

Let's keep our pets safe and comfortable during this hot weather! Share these tips with fellow pet owners to spread awareness. 🐶🐱💧

🐾 Helping Your Pet Through Fireworks & Storms 🐾

Is your pet terrified of thunderstorms or fireworks? Here are some tips to provide immediate relief and long-term support:

1️⃣ Behavior Modification: Techniques like systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning can help reduce fear levels over time.

2️⃣ Medications: Give us a call to discuss anxiety-reducing medications, but remember they must be given before the event starts for maximum effectiveness.

3️⃣ Preparation: Set up a safe space for your pet with a comfortable bed or blanket. Practice settling there with rewards and soothing background music.

4️⃣ Comforting Gestures: Avoid scolding or punishing your pet when they're scared. Instead, provide a calm presence and a cozy spot to rest.

5️⃣ Distractions: Background noise from radios or TVs, along with toys or playmates, can help divert your dog's attention from the frightening sounds.

Remember, it's essential to address your pet's fears early and consistently. With patience and the right approach, you can help your furry friend feel more secure during storms and fireworks. 🌩️🐶

As the weather warms up and we spend more time outdoors with our furry companions, it's essential to be aware of the risks associated with Lyme disease in dogs. 🌿🦠

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, and dogs are just as susceptible as humans. But fear not! With a little knowledge and proactive care, you can help keep your pup safe and healthy. 💪

Here's what you need to know:

🔍 Symptoms: Keep an eye out for signs such as lethargy, lameness, joint swelling, fever, and loss of appetite. Early detection is key to effective treatment!

🌳 Prevention: Minimize your dog's exposure to ticks by avoiding wooded and grassy areas, using tick preventions, and checking for ticks after outdoor adventures. Don't forget to speak with us about safe and effective tick prevention options!

🩺 Testing: Consider annual screening tests for Lyme disease, especially if you live in a high-risk area or if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors.

At Harmony Road Animal Hospital, we're here to support you and your furry family members every step of the way. If you have any concerns about Lyme disease or tick prevention, don't hesitate to reach out. Together, we can keep those tails wagging and those paws exploring safely! 🌟🐶

We all know cats are masters of disguise, but did you know they're also experts at hiding illnesses? 🕵️‍♂️ That's why it's crucial to keep a close eye on your feline friend's behavior and health.

Here are some signs that your cat might be hiding something:

1. Changes in Appetite: Is your kitty suddenly eating less or more than usual? This could indicate a potential health issue.

2. Litter Box Changes: Pay attention to any changes in your cat's litter box habits. Straining, frequent trips to the litter box, or avoiding it altogether could be a sign of a urinary issue.

3. Weight Loss or Gain: Significant changes in weight without a change in diet could signal an underlying problem.

4. Lethargy: If your normally playful cat is suddenly lethargic or less active, it's worth investigating further.

5. Hiding: While cats love their hiding spots, excessive hiding could be a sign that they're not feeling well.

6. Vomiting or Diarrhea: Occasional vomiting or diarrhea may not be unusual, but frequent episodes could indicate a health issue.

7. Changes in Grooming Habits: An increase or decrease in grooming or unkempt fur could be a sign of discomfort or illness.

Remember, cats are experts at masking their discomfort, so it's essential to be vigilant. If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your cat's health, don't hesitate to schedule a check-up with us. Our team is here to help keep your feline friend happy and healthy! 🐾❤️

Does your feline friend turn into a scaredy-cat at the sight of their carrier? 😿 Are car rides with your kitty a nightmare? We're here to help! Check out these purr-fect tips to make your furry companion feel more comfortable with carriers and car rides:

1. Introduce the Carrier Early: Don't wait until the day of the vet visit to bring out the carrier. Make it a part of their environment from kittenhood, so it becomes a familiar and safe space.

2. Positive Association: Associate the carrier with positive experiences by leaving it out with comfy bedding, treats, and toys inside. This helps your cat see it as a cozy hideaway rather than a scary confinement.

3. Take Practice Drives: Help your cat get used to car rides by taking short, leisurely drives around the block. Start with brief trips and gradually increase the duration as your cat becomes more comfortable.

4. Comfort in Transit: Line the carrier with familiar bedding or clothing that smells like home. Covering the carrier with a towel or blanket can also help your cat feel secure and reduce visual stimulation.

5. Reduce Stress: Minimize stress by keeping car rides calm and quiet. Play soothing music and avoid sudden movements or loud noises that could startle your cat.

6. Contact us: If your cat experiences extreme anxiety or motion sickness, contact us as the veterinarian may prescribe medications or supplements to help ease your cat's stress during car rides.

7. Read more at https://harmonyroadah.com/pet-health-resources/pet-health-articles/articles/?rid=195

Remember, patience is key when helping your cat adjust to carriers and car rides. With love, patience, and plenty of treats, you can turn those fearful meows into happy purrs! 🚗😺

Does your dog constantly lick, scratch, rub, and bite the same areas? 🐶

Environmental allergies, also known as atopic dermatitis, might be the reason your itchy dog scratches so much. This is similar to eczema in people and can cause your dog’s skin to become red and inflamed. Just like us, dogs can be allergic to common substances in the environment.🌿🌷

Do you think your dog might be experiencing environmental allergies?

Visit cytopoint.ca for practical information on environmental allergic itch in dogs, with interactive downloadable tools, such as:
• The itch tracker
• An educational brochure
• A checklist for environmental allergic itch

You’ll also be able to find out about CYTOPOINT®, an injection that we can give in clinic that targets itch at its source. It’s a safe, effective and long-lasting treatment to help control itch.
