Concerned your pet may have frostbite? It's crucial to act swiftly. Here are some interim first aid steps to take before heading to the vet:

1️⃣ Warmth and Safety: Move your pet to a warm, dry area as quickly and safely as possible.

2️⃣ Address Hypothermia: If your pet is also suffering from hypothermia, focus on treating that first. Gently wrap them in warm, dry towels or blankets and place warm water bottles (wrapped in towels) near their body.

3️⃣ Caution with Warming: Do not rub or massage the affected area. If you're outdoors and cannot maintain warmth, avoid warming the frostbitten area, as further cold exposure can worsen the injury.

4️⃣ Warm Water Soak: Carefully warm the affected area with warm (NOT HOT) water at 104 to 108Β°F (40 to 42Β°C). Use warm water compresses or soak the area in a bowl of warm water. Avoid direct dry heat sources like heating pads or hair dryers.

5️⃣ Gentle Drying: After warming, pat your pet dry gently and thoroughly. Avoid rubbing.

6️⃣ Keep Warm En Route: While traveling to the vet, keep your pet warm by wrapping them in warm, dry towels or blankets (warmed in the dryer).

7️⃣ Pain Medication Caution: Do not administer any pain medication unless your vet specifically instructs you to do so. Human pain relievers can have serious consequences for dogs.

Your pet's well-being is the top priority, so swift action and professional care are essential in cases of frostbite. πŸΆβ„οΈπŸ’•

🐾 Busting the Final Myth of the Week: Myth #3! 🌟

Myth: "Getting a puppy is always the best option."

Fact: While the idea of shaping a puppy's behavior is undoubtedly tempting, it's vital to understand that puppies don't fully develop emotionally and behaviorally until around three years of age. During this time, they navigate various stages of growth, encounter a range of experiences, and undergo fear imprinting periods that significantly influence their adult behaviors.

On the other hand, adult dogs aged three and older offer a higher level of predictability when it comes to assessing long-term behaviors. If certain traits don't align with your preferences as a prospective pet owner, adult dogs usually come with well-established characteristics, making it easier to anticipate what you're getting.

It's also worth noting that raising puppies demands a considerable amount of dedication, attention, and training, whereas adult dogs may already have a foundation of training in place.

So, whether you're considering a puppy or an adult dog, there are fantastic options for every pet lover! 🐢🐾❀️

Planning a pet-friendly getaway? πŸš—βœˆοΈ

Here are some travel tips to make the journey smoother for your furry companion:

1️⃣ Pack Important Documents: Don't forget your pet's medical records, recent lab results, rabies vaccination tag, and any necessary medications. And, of course, bring her regular food.

2️⃣ Familiar Feeding: Use her own food and water dishes to provide a sense of comfort and routine.

3️⃣ H2O from Home: Bring along some water from home. Different water sources may have varying minerals or smells, which can sometimes upset your pet's interest in drinking.

Traveling with your pet can be an incredible adventure with a little extra preparation. Safe travels! πŸΆπŸŒπŸ’•

🐱 Is Your Senior Cat Feeling Stressed? 🌼

We're here with some helpful tips to ease their stress and provide the ultimate comfort:

1️⃣ Change Can Be Challenging: Senior cats often struggle with change. Try to maintain a consistent routine to provide them with a sense of security.

2️⃣ Avoid Sudden Shifts: If changes are inevitable, minimize abrupt alterations to your cat's environment or schedule. Gradual transitions can be less stressful.

3️⃣ Extra Love and Attention: When change is unavoidable, shower your senior feline with more attention and affection. Your love can work wonders in reducing their stress.

4️⃣ Time Away Solutions: If you have to be away for an extended period, consider a trusted pet sitter. Familiar faces can be a source of comfort.

5️⃣ Boarding with Familiarity: If a kennel stay is required, pack lots of their favorite belongings, including cherished bedding and special toys. Familiar scents (such as blankets or towels that they sleep on) can ease their anxiety.

Remember, your senior cat's well-being is a top priority, and these simple steps can make their golden years even brighter. 🌟🐾

🐾 It's Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week, and we're setting the record straight! 🌟

Myth #1: Shelter pets cannot overcome behavioral issues.

Fact: Understanding the diverse backgrounds of rescued animals is key. While some faced unfortunate circumstances, most are wonderful pets eagerly seeking forever homes. Reasons for being in shelters vary - from growing up without a family to owners no longer able to care for them, or even the owners passing away. Some pets are lost, unable to reunite with their families, while others have been rescued from hoarding or abusive situations. These experiences may lead to traits like caution, fear, shyness, and more.

The takeaway? Many of these issues can be improved with time, love, patience, and guidance from foster caregivers and adoptive parents. πŸΆπŸ‘πŸ’•

🐾 Ensuring a Wonderful Life for Your Aging Cat 🌟

Your feline friend deserves the best, especially as they gracefully age. Here are some essential tips to make their senior years their happiest:

1️⃣ Monitor Their Movement: Keep an eye on your cat's daily habits. Are they still following their usual routine and taking naps in various spots around your home? Cats who aren't feeling their best tend to move less and stick to a few sleeping areas and are often not as interested in food as they would be.

2️⃣ Muscle Condition: As you pamper your cat with affection, pay attention to their muscle condition. Check how easy it is to feel the bumps along their spine and the bones of their hips. Ideally, these should not be palpable in a healthy cat. Ideally, firm muscle should be palpable in a healthy cat.

3️⃣ Lumps and Bumps: While petting your cat, gently feel for any lumps or bumps. If you notice any, make a note of what, when, and where you felt them and share this information with your veterinarian.

Taking these steps will help ensure that your aging cat enjoys the quality of life they truly deserve. 🐱❀️

Celebrating Veterinary Heroes: Our Beloved RVTs

In the world of animal care and well-being, there is a special group of unsung heroes, often working quietly in the background, ensuring our beloved pets receive the best care possible. They are Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), and it's time to shine a spotlight on these dedicated professionals who play a pivotal role in veterinary medicine.

🐾 The Backbone of Veterinary Care 🐾

RVTs are the backbone of veterinary practices, providing invaluable support to veterinarians, animals, and pet owners. They possess a wealth of knowledge and skills, and their contributions are immeasurable.

πŸ’‘ Incredible Versatility πŸ’‘

One of the most remarkable aspects of RVTs is their versatility. They wear multiple hats, handling an impressive range of responsibilities. From surgical assistance and laboratory diagnostics to radiology, patient care, and client education, they do it all. They often act as the bridge between veterinary teams, ensuring seamless communication and care.

πŸŽ“ Continuous Learning πŸŽ“

RVTs are committed to their profession's growth and development. They pursue ongoing education to stay updated on the latest advancements in veterinary medicine, enabling them to provide the best care possible.

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Client Education πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

RVTs play a vital role in educating pet owners. They patiently explain medical conditions, treatment options, and preventive care, empowering pet parents to make informed decisions about their furry family members' well-being.

πŸ™Œ The Unsung Heroes πŸ™Œ

Despite their vital role, RVTs often work behind the scenes. Many pet owners may not even realize the extent of their contribution. It's time to acknowledge the immense difference they make in the lives of our pets and the support they provide to veterinary teams.

🌟 Expressing Our Gratitude 🌟

To all RVTs, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude. Your dedication, hard work, and compassion do not go unnoticed. You are instrumental in keeping our pets healthy, happy, and thriving. Your role in the veterinary field is invaluable, and we are thankful for your commitment to animal welfare.

Throughout RVT month, you've likely heard some of our Associates reference RVT 360. RVT 360 is an exciting, forward-thinking initiative that exemplifies the innovative spirit of VCA Canada and our unwavering commitment to the professional growth of our RVTs. Through dedicated mentorship from our veterinarians and customized communication training by BS Communications, they enhance their skills to become trusted extensions of their veterinarians in delivering exceptional patient care and client service. VCA Canada celebrates the collective efforts of our Associates at RVT 360 hospitals, who genuinely embrace this team-centric approach to veterinary medicine.

From our first class of 9 courageous VCA Canada RVTs completing the training in 2022 to the 22 RVTs making up the class of 2023, the program continues to gain momentum, with two more RVTs scheduled to complete training this year. Additionally, we are excited to announce the 2024 program is already in the planning stages, with applications set to open in the upcoming year.

As RVT month comes to an end, we hope you all join us in recognizing the great strides made and the promising future ahead, celebrating the significant role our amazing RVTs play in caring for life's greatest companion
