🐾 Meet Edna 🐾
Edna is a 22 month old French Bulldog who was seen on referral from Nova Scotia in August with Dr. Dwan after losing her ability to walk. Dr. Dwan didn't think surgery would be the correct route for this patient and opted to try rehabilitation instead through medical management, nursing care and exercise restriction.
Edna's owner has shared with us that this sweet girl has now made a full recovery and can walk and run again with no issues! We're so happy to see how well this sweet girl is doing! ❤
Does your pet have a RAHC success story? Send us a private message or an email and we may share your story on our social media! 🐾
Tick season isn't over in New Brunswick!
We pulled this feeding tick off of a canine patient a couple of weeks ago. While many clients assume ticks are no longer a worry once Fall hits, ticks are actually active any time the temperature climbs above 4°C (even if it is a warm day in the middle of winter)!
This is why year-round tick prevention is never a bad idea. If you would like some parasite prevention for your furry family members, call us at 506-387-4015 🐾
🔬 EAR MITES 🔬
Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are tiny microscopic parasites that live on cats, dogs, rabbits and other mammals and feed on the wax and oils inside the ear canal. They are the second most common external parasite found on cats and dogs after the flea. Ear mites are barely visible to the naked eye but are highly contagious via direct contact with another infested animal.
Ear mites are most common in kittens and puppies, however they can affect pets of any age. Symptoms of an ear mite infestation look similar to an ear infection - irritated, itchy ears - however ear mites produce an ear discharge that is dark and crumbly, often being referred to as having a "coffee grounds-like" appearance.
The video below was taken a couple of weeks ago when our RVT noticed very dirty ears on a kitten that was in for his neuter procedure. When she looked at a sample of the ear discharge under the microscope, she discovered this severe ear mite infestation!
Luckily, ear mites are fairly easily treated, usually with topical treatments prescribed by the veterinarian. A thorough ear cleaning was done on this kitten and he went home with an anti-parasitic medication to clear up the ear mites.
If you suspect your pet may have ear mites or an ear infection, please call us at 506-387-4015 and book an appointment with our Wellness Team ☺️

✨ The Importance of Pet Insurance ✨
If you're a pet owner, it's essential to consider getting pet insurance. Pet insurance can provide you with peace of mind and financial security in case of unexpected accidents or illnesses that your pet may experience. Pet insurance works similarly to human health insurance, covering the cost of veterinary bills, medication, surgeries, and more. Without insurance, pet owners can face signficiant expenses that could be difficult to manage, especially in emergencies. Moreover, pet insurance allows you to focus on your pet's health rather than worrying about the cost of treatment.
Spring is officially here, and so are warmer temperatures! ☀
Ticks are out and active any day when temperatures reach 4°C and above. Be prepared! Once a tick is on your pet, they can be hard to find.

Certain types of mushrooms, such as the wild ones growing along hiking trails or even in our own backyards, can be very harmful to pets. 🍄
Keep your pets away from wild mushrooms and remove any that you discover growing in your yard or along your usual walking route.

Don't let your dog eat your homework! 📚✏️
Prevent school supplies from becoming an unwanted snack for your pet by safely storing items like pencils, glue sticks, and markers away and out of reach from curious paws.

Did you know that just like people, pets can have seasonal allergies?
Many are allergic to pollens, molds, and grasses, like ragweed. If you think your pet may have fall allergies, speak with your veterinarian to find the best course of treatment for your beloved companion.
