AA Visiting School Berlin- Animalesque

AA Visiting School Berlin- Animalesque Architectural Association Visiting School, Berlin explores innovative new ways people and animals can share cities.
(2)

In a city where almost a third of its surface consists of forests, parks, gardens, lakes, rivers or waterways, but also of uncountable pockets of green spaces and abandoned buildings; Berlin host an extensive - but invisible - network of hundreds of animal species living under their own rules and in parallel to the its wider urban system. This extraordinary Berliner wildlife is the product of the

city history and its urban destruction that left an irregular and disintegrated city landscape. Berlin has the richest urban fauna in Europe, where organic green corridors allow many species to get closer, move through or live in the centre of the city. As a complex urban living space, Berlin gives us the opportunity to envision new approaches to the physical and spatial relation with nature and animals. In order to understand how people and animals co-habit, we will investigate the collective behaviours of a wide range of animals from insects, birds and mammals, their patterns of displacement and territorial domains in the city. We will design and build 1:1 scale installations to create responsive ecosystems and study pollination of different species. Sensorial augmentation will help us to dive into the hidden and unexpected layers of the animal world. We invite students and practitioners from all disciplines to use architectural, political, technological and ecological activism, in Berlin, to create an ‘Animalesque Utopia’.

Mission accomplished! A nest has emerged from hard work, collective thinking and local materials. From the bottom-up, our nest started to grow by placing and weaving branches. After 10 days of hard work, the nest felt a bit more like a home to us, and hopefully, it will be home for birds and other animals soon! Let’s bring architecture for co-inhabitation!
Thanks to Floating University, all of our guests that inspired us with talks and field walks. And of course thanks to these year's participants for joining us!

Animalesque is delighted to announce the participation of Emanuele Coccia
i our Visiting School and Lecture Series.

‘ When I was young, I was sent to a high school for agriculture. For years, I had to study botany, chemistry, and plant life in general. Since my philosophical interests were well established by then, I had already realized that our knowledge of plants was at a much lower level than our knowledge of animals. The problem with botany is that it’s essentially based on concepts drawn from animal life. Its methodology is built entirely on the animal – life point of view ’

‘ Ever since Darwin, even while acknowledging that man is an animal, a biological species, we’ve continued to divide knowledge into the humanities and the natural sciences, when in fact that division makes no sense. At the very least, we should consider the humanities to be part of biology and zoology, and the natural sciences to be spiritual sciences, because man is an animal '

Emanuele Coccia is Associate Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His books includes Sensible Life. a micro-ontology of the image (Fordham University Press 2016) Goods. Advertising, Urban Space and the Moral Law of the Image (Fordham University Press 2018) and The Life of Plants (Polity 2018).

Joan Fontcuberta: You are a true Animalesque inspiration.
Where science reaches its limits in his works, the imagination frequently finds a creative space in which to flourish. With nearly four decades of prolific dedication to photography, he has developed a both artistic and theoretical work, which focuses on the conflicts between nature, technology, photography and truth.

This 2014 exhibition explored the incredible fictions of Joan Fontcuberta, mixing fact with fiction and science with art. https://www.scienceandmediamuseum.o...

Soil is a complex composition that sustains life. Animal Matter will be the second phase of our AA Visiting School Berlin- Animalesque, where material properties and urban soil potentials as an habitat for organisms will be explored. Great chance to engage life chains and the relevance of animals for new architectural paradigms.

Animalesque Spring Talks took place on April 14th, 2018 in collaboration with ANCB The AEDES Metropolitan Laboratory

https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=18327363 #.W0N6PC2B2CR

Zoologists, scientists , engineers, artists and architects from several nationalities together with local experts gathered to show our research on animal human coexistance-
this created a base for the research and teaching.

Animalesque agenda is to formulate visions and ideas for a better but yet unknown future city!
We would like to thank all speakers, visitors and the ANCB team for making our kick-off in Berlin into an inspiring event, establishing new valuable connections and directions towards an Animalesque Utopia!
