Founded 15 years ago by Pamela Cartwright and Mike Rimmer our veterinary practice has established itself in the local communities and provides care to thousands of pets each year. We know as well as anyone that you consider your pet to be an important member of your family. That is why the whole team here at the practice work hard to provide the very best veterinary care services. Town and Country
is a first opinion Veterinary Surgery with 6 Veterinary Surgeons and a dedicated team of both Qualified and Student Veterinary Nurses. At Town and Country, we like to focus on preventative treatment as well as seeing your pets in times of need. The nurses hold free clinics on all aspects of pet ownership and preventative health care, with weight clinics, adolescent checks, dental checks, and older pet checks to name but a few. We feel these clinics are an excellent idea for a number of reasons. It gives us the opportunity to get to know your pet individually and know their personality. It also benefits your pet, realizing that going to the vets can actually be a pleasant experience! Just popping in for a weight check and a chat with the nurse can make your pet enjoy coming to the surgery which can make an unavoidable visit much less stressful for you and your pet. We look forward to meeting you and your pet! The data controller is Independent Vetcare Ltd, The Chocolate Factory, Keynsham, Bristol, BS31 2AU, (ICO reference number Z3212973). We have a Data Protection Officer who can be contacted at [email protected]

Well done to anyone who correctly identified the babies posted this morning as being…. 🥁 🥁 🥁
Ferrets!
6 healthy kits were delivered by c-section from Finch the polecat, who after passing just one at home had failed to produce any more over a number of hours and appeared in distress.
Finch was understandably exhausted last night after her straining and the big surgery, but this morning is doing brilliantly, eating well and very bright, and all her kits are strong and vocal too!

The team at our Whalley surgery had a very late night on Thursday, with vets Chloe & Joe and Lead Nurse Sarah staying after closing time to bring 6 new lives into the world via emergency caesarian section!
The little newborn babies are pictured here, but which of our clients can guess what these will be when they grow up big and strong???

If you see a dog wearing these colours, it could mean more than you think...
💛 The dog needs space. Make sure your dog doesn't run up to them.
💚 You often see this with the label 'friendly' on the lead.
❤️ This dog is reactive. No other dogs, do not approach.
🤍 Usually means the dog is deaf and or blind.
💜 Please don't feed me.
💙 In training, no distractions, please.
This might not always be the case, but always be vigilant when walking your dog, as all dogs have different needs🐾

*Warning, this post contains photographs from surgery*
This stunning boy is Neville Charles, an 8month old Italian Greyhound that we saw at our Blackburn branch this week.
Neville is what is known as a “cryptorchid”, where his testicles had not fully descended. For Neville his were trapped under the skin in the inguinal (groin) region, rather than being properly situated in the sc***um.
Retained testicles are significantly more likely to become cancerous in later life, so these needed to be removed!
Thankfully Neville’s testicles had left the abdomen which makes this a more straightforward procedure to locate and remove them by skin incisions only - in abdominal cryptorchidism the testicle can be trapped anywhere from the kidney to the groin, which requires a more invasive surgical approach into the abdomen, and sometimes they can be extremely small and tricky to find!
Rather than the routine approach of a single incision by the sc***um, Neville had two small incisions further forward, over each of the swellings we could feel in his groin, through which the offending articles were removed.
The surgery was thankfully uneventful and he is back home now recovering well with his lovely owner.
We would generally expect testicles to have descended appropriately by around 6 months of age, so if you think your pet could have this issue, speak to one of our team!

We always like happy owners & happy pets, here is a great video sent in to us of a litter of puppies we delivered by emergency caesarean section in mid-April! Their owner had this to say: "Hi all, Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help!!! As promised…puppies…we still have two girls available. Put the video wherever you wish; if it wasn’t for you guys I’m not sure where we would be!!!" If anyone would like more information on the two puppies available, the owner has asked us to share their mobile number of 07506550654
Your dog’s annual injections include vaccination against parvo, so it’s vital to keep these up to protect your pet against this serious infection. Puppies can be vaccinated against canine parvovirus from around six weeks old. As well as protecting your dog or puppy against this nasty and potentially serious disease, regular vaccination is required by kennels and pet insurers as a condition of cover. Read our article to find out more . . . https://www.myfamilyvets.co.uk/common-questions-about-puppy-vaccinations
Did you know we now offer discounted price Wellness Screenings for older pets? Tonight at Blackburn we had a 1year old cat called KitKat in for a check over. She had escaped on Boxing Day, and over the last 10 days her new foster owners had noticed her abdomen was rapidly enlarging. Our vet Chloe performed an ultrasound to confirm she was pregnant, and got this fantastic view of the beating heart of one of the kittens! Surrounding this you can see the bright white of the rib cage, with the spine also coming in and out of view as the ultrasound probe moves. Cats are generally pregnant for 63-65 days, and KitKat will be 42days pregnant based on her date of escape, so is only a few weeks away from the big day! Usually cats will have their litters without incident but her new owners will keep a very watchful eye on her and have already set up a nesting box.
Following on from our post last week, 3 of the 4 cats have found homes. The remaining boy is sweet and other than some teeth that will likely eventually need dental work, seems to be in good condition. We are still searching for a home for him, anyone with interest please contact us We are only willing to rehome to an existing client known to us, to ensure he goes to a good home

Beach tips... There’s nothing like a trip to the seaside on a summer’s day, especially when your furry friend can come along and join in the fun! Sadly, beaches can pose some threats to our dogs so it’s important for owners to remain vigilant. Let’s take a look at the main threats to watch out for, and how to keep your dog safe when they’re at the beach.
