There is nothing new about our attachments to our pets.

Ancient Roman tomb for a dog. Translation: "How sweet and friendly she was! While she was alive she used to lie in the lap, always sharing sleep and bed. What a shame, Midge, that you have died! You would only bark if some rival took the liberty of lying up against your mistress. What a shame, Midge, that you have died! The depths of the grave now hold you and you know nothing about it. You cannot go wild nor jump on me, and you do not bare your teeth at me with bites that do not hurt."

It's getting hot hot hot!

Protect your animals from the heat

🌞Dogs can get heat stroke on hot walks
🌞Animals get heatstroke in hot hutches they cannot escape
🌞Animals can get heatstroke if left in rooms with no ventilation
🌞Animals can get heatstroke if they have no access to cool water

Parts of the UK are expected to witness the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures peaking at 34C (93.2F) today according to the Met office.

We are hopefully aware now of the national UK campaign 'Dogs Die in Hot Cars' - this advice remains!

However, work by VetCompass has shown that 10 times as many dogs present for veterinary care related to heat-related illness (HRI) following exercise as dogs that present following being entrapped in a vehicle.

Take a look at the following information from the RSPCA (England & Wales) :

https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/dogs/health/hotwalks

Remember there could be a number of risk factors including:

✅Brachycephalic breeds
✅Age - juvenile or geriatric
✅Thick Coated Dogs
✅General Health

❌Do not leave animals in hot cars
❌ Ensure they aren't locked in rooms with no ventilation
❌ Provide access to plenty of cool, clean water
❌Do not exercise in the heat
❌Do not lock rabbits and guinea pigs in hutches with no escape from the heat

We often have clients who are concerned about leptospirosis vaccines, usually because of things they have read online or been told by other dog owners. These concerns are not backed up by the science, but many people are nevertheless troubled and often ask for advice from our vets.

This article is a little technical, but covers the issues clearly.

As a practice we recommend use of the L4 vaccines

A blizzard of misinformation about leptospirosis is putting animals and human health at risk Leptospirosis is a disease spread via a bacteria called Leptospira. Leptospirosis has been classified by the BSAVA (British Small Animal Veterinary Association) as a core vaccine – one that all dogs should...

HEAT STROKE IN CATS

Heat stroke in cats is a bigger threat than you may think. Although our feline friends descend from desert environments, they can still suffer from heat stroke when the heat is sweltering – both inside and out. Let’s take a closer look at heat stroke in cats, how to spot it and how to keep your cat safe and cool. Read more at My Family Vets: https://www.myfamilyvets.co.uk/heat-stroke-in-cats

⚠ CAT FOOD RECALL | An outbreak of a rare condition that causes severe illness in cats has led to a voluntary recall of multiple brands of cat food ➡ http://whi.ch/CatFoodRecall

Fold Hill Foods is voluntarily recalling a number of its hypoallergenic cat food products, from brands including Sainsbury’s, AVA and Applaws, over a possible link to an outbreak of a potentially fatal cat condition, feline pancytopenia.

This is Nala.

She is a young fit Labrador who was playing football on a overcast 21⁰c day.

At 1.30pm she was rushed to Hook Vets with heat stroke.

Her temperature was at a whopping 41.3⁰c. A dogs normal temperature range is 38 - 39⁰c

Heat stroke can cause irreversible damage or even death. Thankfully her owner noticed and reacted quickly and Nala is doing well 💜 His quick actions saved her life.

Dogs that are more prone to heat stroke are old dogs, overweight dogs, flat faced breeds and puppies. However any dog of any age or breed or fitness can get heat stroke.

Signs of heat stroke are:
⚠️ Faster, heavier breathing
⚠️ Excessive thirst and drooling
⚠️ Increased heart rate and pulse rate
⚠️ Dark coloured gums/ tounge (red/purple)
⚠️ Glassy eyes
⚠️ Staggering or weakness
⚠️ Seizures
⚠️ Unconsciousness

If you think your dog has heat stroke DO NOT throw cold water on them as this can cause the body to go into shock.

On warm days you can help your dogs by:
✅ Restricting exercise
✅ Make sure they have access to cool, shaded areas
✅ Give them access to fresh water
✅ Walking them first thing in the morning or last thing at night when it's cooler
✅ If your pet is over weight start them on a weight loss journey

Please share this post to raise awareness

Worth knowing again for the summer weeks..

In these hot summery days please be careful - dogs don’t sweat and can overheat very fast, especially If they have short noses like bulldog breeds.
Also remember tarmac and pavement can get hot enough to burn your dogs feet
