Daily question: Should I take my aquarium plants out of the pots.

Yes, you gave some more context that your LFS was selling these as potted plants, or weighted plants and you were under the assumption it was a bit like bare-rooted or potted plants in the garden store.

It's more like cuttings vs. bare-rooted plants. Follow me on a brief detour through how most aquarium plants are grown.

What we refer to as aquatic plants are more often than not seasonally flooded, or just evolved to grow in very wet conditions, think behind waterfalls. This means as long as you keep the roots wet and the air humid enough then you can grow them emmersed. Or out of water.

This for the record is why so many plants sold as aquatic are just house plants that can last a few months underwater. The line between can survive a few months under water, and can thrive long term underwater is just a few feet in nature.

Now you're a plant grower groing your trays and trays of plants, just with the roots submerged in water, or in a growing medium. Water with all the nutrients that plants need to grow well. Those excess nutrients are absorbed in the rockwool, the white or off white stuff inside the pot. Once you pop the pot and the rock wool into your tank they will leech out, and that's not always great for your tank.

The other type, often called weighted, are normally cuttings from fast growing stem plants, and in all honesty some of these do really well from cuttings, so choose wisely, but it's often a good investment.

So yes take off the pot, and the rock wool, don't worry if you have to trim the roots, they will grow back and help to anchor the plant into your substrate or to the rock/wood/random ornament you've glued it to.
