TOP 10 TIPS KEEPING DOGS SAFE IN THE HEAT.
☆ Know the signs of heatstroke - see picture.
☆ Have multiple water stations inside and outside in the shade.
☆ Short WALKIES in early morning and late evenings. Avoid hot pavement as paw pads burn. -see picture
☆ Provide shady spots inside and outside.
☆ Cooling mats, wet towels, and paddling pools are great for cooling a dog down.
☆ Animal Sunscreen. Yes ! Dogs and cats can get sunburned through hair and fur. Slather it on the nose too .
☆ Never leave a dog in a car! No not even a minute...
☆ Provide circulating air inside with a fan.
☆ Have your dog groomed. Dogs regulate their body temperature better when their paws are free from dirt and hair and their skin and hair is clean, moisturised and free of matts.
☆ Need advice - speak to me!
Happy Safe Summer.

Did you know that solar radiation can also be harmful to our cats' skin? 🤔

Animals with white hair and light-coloured skin or body areas with little to no hair (such as scars or bald patches) are less protected and particularly susceptible to suffering from sunburn. These burns typically look like an area of red skin that, with time, may start to flake or form crusts.

Unfortunately, these problems may increase the chances of a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Early cancer signs might be subtle and easily mistaken for scratches or wounds, so keep an eye out for red skin and open wounds that don't seem to heal on their nose and ear tips.

Make sure your cat is protected this summer by providing them with shaded spots to rest and applying pet-safe sunscreen to delicate areas!

This week it’s getting hot. I don’t know about you but I’m quite happy about it - I love the sunshine BUT…

It’s too bloody hot to walk your dogs in the heat of the day!

This week’s temperatures are soaring and it will not be safe for your dogs to be out and about in the middle of the day. Many of them won’t even cope late morning. Keep an eye on the actual temperatures, don’t just rely on the time of day.

Yep. It’s simple.

Unlike us sweaty humans 🥵 dogs do not have the ability to sweat through their skin. They rely on panting and being able to release heat through their paw pads and noses to help regulate their body temperature. Imagine we then go and walk them on a hot surface whilst those poor paws are trying to help cool them down. All we’re going to do is help them cook 🧐.

And don’t get me started on their fur coats and our short nosed breeds.

Keep them cool. Avoid the heat of the day.

I know what it’s like to have energetic breeds - trust me! But if I can keep them occupied without a walk in the heat then so can you 🥰

🐾 Walk early or late but don’t take for granted the time of day - check the temps before you head out. Set those early alarms ⏰.

🐾 Add treats or frozen fruit to water bowls and make sure you refresh their water regularly.

🐾 Frozen treats are a brilliant idea - from frozen Cucumber 🥒 or Carrots 🥕 to ice cubes 🧊 with treats hidden inside and there’s always a trusty frozen licki mat or stuffed kong to try.

🐾 Play brain games and enrichment games with them to keep them busy and occupied, you may have seen some of our enrichment videos!

Here are some fabulous free FB pages you can check out for ideas of enrichment activities & games for your dogs!

It’s not just dogs in parked cars that can be a problem! 👉 Even when travelling, the temperature in a car’s front seat can differ greatly from that in the boot, as the back seats act as a barrier to air conditioning, which increases the temperature dramatically in the boot.

If you’re in slow-moving traffic, windows down won’t work so well either, so make sure your pets are in a comfortable temperature everywhere in your car, even if it feels good in the driver’s seat!

What other car safety tips for pets in hot weather do you know? Let us know in the comments below 👇
