Winter fleas. They're a thing, unfortunately!

That's right, even in the darkest depths of winter, these parasites can make yours and your pet's life an itchy nightmare. ❄️

Thanks to central heating, even in the colder months our homes stay at a warm enough temperature to support the flea's breeding life cycle.

Active infestations can take months to eradicate! This is why regular preventive treatment is so important.

All Pet Health Plan customers receive 12 months' flea & worm treatment included in their plan, along with many other great benefits: https://www.thepetvet.co.uk/pet-health-plans

Unsure how to apply your pet's flea treatment? Ask our team - they'll be happy to show you!

Here are some tips to make sure tonight isn't too frightful for your pets...

🎃 Be careful with the placement of your pumpkin so your pet doesn't bump into it and burn themselves.
👻 Don't force them to get dressed up if they're not a fan of fancy dress!
💀 Chocolate is a tasty treat for us humans but toxic for our pets. Make sure they can't sniff it out.
🕸️ Keep fake cobwebs out of reach from pets. These can also pose a threat to wildlife who may get tangled if it's strung up outdoors.
🦇 For pets likely to be spooked by Trick or Treaters, build a cosy den for them at home, use plenty of positive reinforcement and reward calm behaviour with treats.

You could even pop a blanket in there sprayed with Pet Remedy. This calming spray works instantly by tricking fired-up nerve cells into thinking they are getting a message from the brain to calm.

Pet Remedy is available to buy in practice!

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is a condition that affects dogs in the autumn months. It’s a rare condition but we’ve seen a few recent cases across our group.

While the cause isn’t definite, it’s thought to be linked to harvest mites and typically affects dogs who have recently been walked in wooded areas or parkland.

Symptoms of infection include:

➡️ Vomiting
➡️ Diarrhoea
➡️ Low energy
➡️ High temperature
➡️ Muscle tremors

If you suspect your dog may have SCI, you must bring them in to see us immediately. We’re open every Saturday & Sunday too, so please don’t delay bringing them in!

Book an appointment via our online portal here: https://thepetvet.euw1.ezyvet.com/external/portal/main/login

Today is World Mental Health Day ❤️

Here are some of our team members with their pets, sharing how they help to support their mental health.

✨Joanne - Customer Experience Manager with her horse, Isla:

“Either before or after a busy day at work, I have to go the stables to care for Isla. She always puts a smile on my face with her cheeky kisses for treats. She is my therapy along with my 2 dogs Jasmine & Parker who always provide a very warm tail wagging welcome when I arrive home.”

✨ Will - Customer Experience Manager with his partner and their lovely dogs:

“Nothing beats getting out in the great outdoors for a long hike with our spaniels: Podrick, Walter and Bessie.”

✨ Lizzie - Content Marketing Manager with border collie Meg:

“Taking Meg for a walk is my favourite part of the day. Being a collie, she needs lots of exercise. We get out together in all weathers and I always feel like a weight has been lifted by the time we get back home. She comes everywhere with me and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

✨ Sian - Area Manager with cat Elmo:

“My cats are my everything. If I’ve had a difficult day, there’s nothing that helps me unwind more than cuddling into them and hearing their purring.”

We'd love to see pics of you with your pets below and hear about how they help you.

For any pet undergoing a dental procedure, it's important you brush up on good aftercare! 🪥 By keeping them in a regular dental hygiene routine at home, you can help to keep their teeth in tip-top shape, helping to reduce the need for future dental work.

For all pets undergoing a dental procedure, we're offering 10% off this bundle of dental products. This includes:

➡️ Stomodine: an antibacterial, soothing gel to help maintain healthy teeth and gums in dogs and cats.
➡️ Aquadent: a water additive for dogs and cats. Used in fresh drinking water, it can help to eliminate bad breath and aids in controlling plaque build-up as part of an oral hygiene regime.
➡️ Enzymatic toothpaste kit: regular brushing can help to prevent tooth and gum disease.
➡️ Plaque Off: an oral hygiene powder supplement and dental treats which help to address bad breath, plaque and tartar.

⚠️ Blue-green algae ⚠️

This is highly toxic to dogs & more prevalent right now. Blue-green algae thrives in hot summer weather so the warm spell in August has caused this toxic bacteria to grow rapidly.

It can be difficult to identify but it’s most common in non-flowing, fresh water such as lakes, ponds and rivers.

Take note of any signage around any water sources advising there may be blue-green algae present. Do not let your dog enter the water! If there’s a chance they’ll try to jump in, keep them on the lead.

After exposure, symptoms can include the following:

- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Seizures
- Weakness, collapse or unconsciousness
- Disorientation or confusion
- Drooling
- Difficulty breathing

Contamination can result in symptoms or prove fatal as early as 15 minutes from the time a dog ingesting the water.

If your dog has consumed water you suspect may contain blue-green algae, they'll need immediate veterinary assistance.
