Conformation and gait. ⠀

The way an animal looks tells me a lot about the way that it is going to move. For a dog like this to adopt a ‘pace’ type walk would not raise any concerns, because his legs are quite long in relation to his back length. For a dog with a longer back and shorter legs however, this type of movement may suggest a problem. ⠀

My job is all about putting the pieces together to work out exactly what is going on. This starts with conformational assessment so that I can determine if the way an animal is moving is normal in relation to its shape.⠀

Stretching is a vital part of every single one of my treatments and something you can do with your horse every day at home. ⠀

If you are considering seeking musculoskeletal treatment for your pet, please also consider the many treatment benefits, including:
🐶 Improved performance
🐶 Decreased pain and soreness
🐶 Increased flexibility and joint range of motion
🐶 Longer stride length
🐶 Reduced stiffness

There are lots of tell-tale signs that your dog may be giving you to let you know there is a problem, some of these signs include:
🐶 Loss of performance or reluctance to move forward
🐶 Changes in behaviour or temperament, including sudden aggression
🐶 Abnormal gait
🐶 Stiffness and struggling to stand and jump up
🐶 Reluctance to play or exercise
…but musculoskeletal treatment isn’t just for working dogs or dogs with a problem, it can help improve the performance of all animals and prevent issues from developing, keeping your animal fit and healthy for longer.

My treatment includes:
🐾 A full history of your dog, allowing me to tailor the treatment accordingly 📝
🐾 Static and dynamic assessments of your dog’s musculoskeletal system, assessing how your animal moves in terms of its conformation to help pinpoint any problems 🐕
🐾 McTimoney chiropractic treatment, which will directly manipulate the skeleton, correcting any bony misalignments 🦴
🐾 Soft tissue sports massage, incorporating myofascial and trigger point release techniques
🐾 Joint mobilisations and stretching
🐾 Thermographic assessment (if requested) 📸
🐾 Animal specific aftercare with suggested exercises, to help you and your horse work together to achieve your goals 📄

S P I N A L P A L P A T I O N

…but what’s that?

Spinal palpation is a part of my treatment where I use only my hands to detect subtle misalignments of the spinal vertebrae. These bones may be slightly out of line to either the left or the right side and this is what impinges the nerve running inside them. When nerves become impinged, the messages that they carry to and from the brain are interrupted. This is exactly what causes those symptoms that we see when an animal is in need of chiropractic treatment

🐾 Reluctance to work- whether this be refusing jumps or a change in attitude, any differences in how your animal is working can be a symptom of misalignment

🐾 Changes in behaviour- behaviour may change to accommodate any pain your animal may be feeling as a result of misalignment

🐾 Abnormal Movement- whether your animal has started or stopped moving differently or oddly they may need treatment!

Most dogs love to play and it is a great way to not only bond with your dog but also to give them some exercise. Repetitive play, such as catching a ball or rough play can cause different types of misalignments, especially common in the neck. If your dog is a player, keep an eye out for signs of pain and soreness!

What is a brachycephalic skull?

A brachycephalic skull’s main difference when compared to other types of canine skull is the shortened length of the muzzle.

Some common dog breeds that have this shaped skull are pugs, bulldogs, King Charles spaniels and french bulldogs. Because of their shorter skulls, these guys are predisposed to certain health conditions, such as neurological problems, eye infections and respiratory difficulties. ⠀

Before you buy one of these breeds, please consider the extra help they may need and make sure you fully research their needs.⠀
