Gurty gets a new home!
Does a vet nurse ever get a holiday!? 🤣
On a recent trip to Cornwall I was stopped by a passerby asking if I knew what to do with a baby seagull (and no I wasn’t in uniform but maybe these things are just obvious 🤣)
This little seagull chick had fallen from its nest on a roof. After a quick health check we initially tried putting her (we decided to call her Gurty!) in a box with a makeshift nest high up and near her parents who were circling nearby in a hope that they would continue to protect and feed her. However when we checked on her a few hours later she was sat in the cold on the lawn squawking and alerting all the cats in the neighbourhood to her whereabouts and her parents had lost interest! 😥
Soooo…. She was taken back to the air b n b fed, watered and snuggled down for the night! The next day we drove her to Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital Cornwall where she will be looked after with the other 15 chicks they already had staying!
What a strong little character this birdy is, animals never fail to amaze me ❤️
Happy Friday Everyone!!!
This not so little monkey was certainly very happy the whole way through his procedure!
Getting the samples we needed became rather tricky with a very enthusiastic tail getting involved! 😍🐾
Good Morning Everyone!
As I’m sure most of you know one of our vets Jo is also a large animal vet and lives and works on her family farm… these two chose this beautiful morning to make their way into the world ❤️
What a gorgeous sight!
Happy Friday!!!
One of our nurses found this little bumblebee 🐝 on the ground, cold and tired on her way into work yesterday.
We initially popped her in a daffodil in the sunshine and she began to eat but when we checked on her a little while later she was still there and the sun had gone in.
We took her into the practice in a makeshift bee hospital and gave her some Manuka honey, in 10 minutes she was buzzing about and ready to be released. This time of year is very precarious for bees as the weather is so changeable and can get cold quickly, with not many flowers yet in bloom, food is limited. If you see a bee struggling please stop and help, sometimes they just need a nice sheltered flower in the sunshine. Bumblebees are very gentle and will often crawl onto your hand, or you can use a leaf 🍃 Remember bees are great pollinators and are needed as part of our very fragile ecosystem so it’s important we do our best to look after them! You can find lots more useful information on how to look after bees at https://savebees.org/
Happy Friday!!!
Happy Friday!!!
If watching Albus catch treats after his stitch up doesn’t make you happy then we don’t know what will!!
Just look at him 😍
Don’t Stop Me Now
Happy Friday Everyone!
If this video doesn’t bring a smile to your face then we don’t know what will! 🥰🐾🐾
This spiky little chap was found in the road by a member of the public and bought into us at Huckleberry’s.
He was barely responsive, cold and weak!
Hedgehog’s generally hibernate from October/ November time but need to weigh at least 450g to be able to survive a cold winter. This little fella weighed just 360g and had obviously got himself in a bit of a pickle.
He had terrible diarrhoea and when we examined the faeces under a microscope we could see he was infected with various parasites so he was given a treatment for this.
The nurses warmed him up and fed him up and in 2 days he was running about like a happy little chappy!
This video was made as part of our clinical assessment before sending him to Brent Lodge to be cared for over the winter, we hope you enjoy it! ❤️
The importance of responsible breeding.
Breeding from a dog is a challenging, complex and often emotional experience and not one to be taken lightly.
We often see people considering breeding from their pet using phrases such as:
“We thought it would be nice for her to have a litter!”
“She’s so beautiful with a lovely temperament why wouldn’t we breed from her?”
“She was in season and a male dog got hold of her!”
“We didn’t think siblings could mate!”
In reality there are many things to consider and many difficulties you can run into.
So here are just a few of the things you should think about if it is crossing your mind….
The bitch must be fully grown and mature enough to not only deal with the physicalities of pregnancy but also possess the emotional maturity needed in order to care for her puppies.
Breeding from a young and inexperienced bitch will greatly increase the risk of her rejecting the puppies.
Both parents should be fully vaccinated and appropriate breed specific health screening tests performed prior to the mating to ensure no genetic abnormalities are passed on.
Just choosing a nice looking dog from the park is not a sensible option!
Breeding can be very expensive even when things go smoothly. You should consider the costs of a caesarean section in case one was needed and with this the risk to the bitch…. Your beloved pet!
How will you find homes for these puppies? You will need to be ready and able to keep the pups yourself…
These are just a few of the things that need to be considered before embarking on this journey!
We are very lucky here at Huckleberry’s to have Sue Howling on the team. Sue is a very experienced breeder and can offer breeding support and advice.
If you would like to see Sue please call reception to book an appointment!
We’ve all seen Tom chase Jerry but have you ever seen a Great Dane chase a mouse!? Well poor Nala here had no chance catching it but had a fun time trying! ❤️🤣
Happy Friday Everyone!!

What an absolute cutie ❤️
This is the gorgeous Duchess!
Duchess is 14 years old and struggles a bit to keep her coat in tip top condition… that’s a lot of fur!
She came into the practice for a lion shave and when she got home she was much happier and back to her kitten like self! 🥰🐾
And for all of you worried that she may get cold… Duchess is a bit of a princess and prefers the comfort of her home… she also has an impressive wardrobe of jumpers for those chillier days!! ❤️
Our Buzzard patient from yesterday being released! It’s so rewarding to be able to help these beautiful wild animals! ❤️

Here is Erik a 4 month old Jack Russell pup dancing his way into the weekend!! 💃
What a cutie 🥰🐾
It’s that time of year that a lot of pet owners dread as fireworks are abundant!
So this morning we began firework training with Pamplemousse!!
We used the same tried and tested method used with Huckleberry, playing firework noises into the house when both the dogs were calm and relaxed! As you can see neither of the boys batted an eyelid or rather barely even raised an eyelid! 😄 … mission accomplished!!
We will continue this over the next few days/ weeks!
It’s certainly not a one time thing!!
Desensitisation training can be so effective and also very simple and can often avoid the need for sedative/ calming medications.
If you’d like more help or advice with this feel free to give one of our nurses a call! 😃
