Some sad news today that little Moet passed away unexpectedly last night. She was my first ever client when I started out on my own, and many of you will recognise her as the playmate to your own dogs thanks to her polite, happy-go-lucky personality. I know her parents are devastated and I’m sure you’ll all join me in sending our condolences to them at this difficult time ❤️

Yorkshire Water have finally published a map showing the scope of how much untreated wastewater and sewage is discharged into our water. This is absolutely shocking to me, considering that most of it is going directly into rivers, reservoirs and other bodies of water which should be a home to nature, and which (I’m sure) many clients and their dogs swim in.

It is truly terrible how pervasive this issue is across the U.K., and I hope that going forward companies will be held accountable and forced to repair the damage they are causing, but until then, you can at least check this map before swimming to reduce the risk of you and your pets becoming poorly.

Link is in the comments, but here is an example from Ingbirchworth 😢

Super pleased to announce that alongside completing a refresher of my Canine Behaviour Training diploma to stay up-to- date, I have also recently completed a diploma in Canine Holistic Health & Therapy.

Whilst I won’t be offering any additional services presently, I am more than happy to discuss with clients what I’ve learnt and anything applicable for their particular dog 😊

Hope you are all making the most of the (very) late summer! We certainly are!

Considering all the disgusting weather we’ve had of late, this might be an interesting read for those of you who want an inside way to exercise your dogs!

They key takeaways are to work on a stable non slip surface, (so no laminate or tiles), to let the dog do the majority of the work tugging backwards and shaking their head and to keep the toy lower or level with their spine so their neck isn’t craned upwards. Aside from being lots of fun, it’s also a great way to create a bond & train rapid “leave it” and “grab it” commands 🪢

Learn how to play tug with your dog safely! Playing with your dog. Fun relationship building training. Positive reinforcement dog training & behavior!

As a dog walker, this applies to us too. Please please let us know if your dog has shown aggressive tendencies or might snap or nip over being lifted / having feet dried etc.

We are pro muzzle, so please don’t be afraid to let us know that your dog needs to wear one ❤️

Weather!

As it’s due to be hot and sunny all week this week, we’ll be playing it by ear with walks. This might mean shorter walks or changing the time of the visit if possible, but we’ll still be working and able to offer toilet breaks and check ins.

Don’t forget, make sure your pets have plenty of water available and be mindful of where they are left during the day and how hot that room might get with the sun on it ☀️

Heads up for anyone who walks or rides down Park Lane green lane in Upper Cumberworth that there are baby sheep loose on the lane that have got out of a field. Please be very careful if you usually have your dog off lead down here or are greenlaning

Fantastic news! Let’s hope this is a step towards better welfare measures and more responsible ownership of cats 🐱

⚠️🐈 ATTENTION ALL CAT OWNERS! 🐈⚠️

New laws have been put into place making it compulsory to microchip your cat.
The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted or may face a fine of up to £500.

☀️ 2023 Holidays ☀️

Hello!!

It’s shaping up to be another busy year. We are now fully booked for housesitting in February, June, July, September and December. We still have space for cat and small animal visits, but please book early to avoid disappointment!

We are not accepting new dog walking clients at this time, as we are prioritising flexibility for existing clients, but we are accepting new cat and small animal clients.

❄️ That’s me all done for this year. It’s been a hectic year, and with us all facing massive challenges with rising costs, I have been truly blown away by the generosity I’ve been shown by you all. A big thank you to all my clients for their continued business, and wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas. I’ll be back at it on the 3rd January 2023, and until then, I plan to sit down 🤣 ❄️

In light of the recent cold weather, this is something to note! Puppies, elderly dogs and smaller dogs are more vulnerable, as are those with very thin coats like greyhounds ❄️

I’ve currently got a mountain of wild rose trimmings; big branches, smaller branches, leaves and rose hips.

These are generally very well received by rabbits and other small animals, so if anyone would like some (for free) then please let me know. We have loads so would be nice to share it around if people can make use ☺️

*☀️Summer Update☀️*

I am currently at capacity for dog walking and housesitting.

This means that in order to maintain flexibility for existing clients, I am not able to take on new dog walking clients for the foreseeable, and, for the most part, I am fully booked for housesitting until November.

I do still have space for cat / small animal visits, but please let me know as far in advance as you can, as I try and book one weekend off work per month where possible.

As ever, I am really very grateful for the loyalty of my clients especially during the current economic climate and hope that the uncertainty we are all facing will settle sooner rather than later ❤️

Just seen what looked like a silver tabby get clipped by a car outside the foresters pub in lower Cumberworth and run to hide in bushes by the lower Cumberworth 2000 sign. If this is your cat and it returns home, it needs to be checked over by a vet. Unable to look for it further as out with a dog who is not cat friendly unfortunately 😔

FYI. Donaldson’s are now seeing cases. Please let me know if your dog is unwell so that I can adjust your visit to prevent exposure to other dogs. Current advice is that if your dog is poorly they should not be walked and should not be taken into a vet practise without prior agreement. If you are concerned, please phone your vet for advice ❤️

FYI for my bird people!

Housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza are coming into force across the UK at one minute past midnight (00:01) on 29 November 2021.

This means that, from this time, it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers across the UK to keep their birds indoors, or where this is not practical, to take steps to separate them from wild birds.

Keeping your birds undercover away from wild birds is vital to minimise the risk of them becoming infected with avian influenza by wild birds. But housing alone is not the only solution – it remains essential that you follow strict biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of disease spreading to your birds. **Dog Boarding / Daycare**

We are getting lots and lots of enquiries about dog boarding / daycare / dogsitting away from the owner’s home. Unfortunately this is NOT something we do; we only offer live-in housesitting at your own home with your animals.

Our best advice for finding a licensed & legal boarding facility would be to go through your local council website. Kirklees have these businesses listed online below at the link, Barnsley have a phone number for the Animal Health Service who should be able to help you ☺️

FYI for my clients with swimming dogs!

🦠IMPORTANT🦠
Unfortunately we have had a case of Blue-green algae poisioning this weekend. The dog had been swimming in Bottom Mill Dam in Holmbridge and has sadly passed away. This has been reported to environmental health.

Exposure to toxic blue-green algae is often fatal, and can also cause long term health problems in dogs that survive after drinking or swimming in algae-contaminated water. Some types of blue-green algae can kill a dog just 15 minutes to an hour after drinking contaminated water.

DO NOT let your dogs drink or swim in any water which has a green bloom on the surface! If you think your dog has been exposed please call your vet ASAP.

Symptoms of blue-green algae poisioning-
🦠 Vomiting
🦠 Diarrhoea
🦠 Seizures
🦠 Weakness/ collapse
🦠 Disorientation
🦠 Drooling
🦠 Breathing difficulties

https://www.change.org/p/help-me-to-pass-tia-s-law

With the recent increase in popularity of complementary treatments like animal hydrotherapy and physiotherapy, it is super important to make sure that your therapist is operating in a safe and professional manner. If you are looking for a therapist, I strongly recommend speaking to your vet for a referral and signing this petition calling for more regulation of the industry to prevent any more sad situations like the one discussed.
