THE PUPPY HUT PACKAGE PROGRAM
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Meet Gerry….the 17 week old German Shepherd + Malamute 🥰
Gerry has begun his grooming journey and is here starting out with step 1 of the program. Gentle Introduction and familiarity.
It is vital not to rush puppies when they begin their grooming journey as this can quickly instil fear.
Gerry is enjoying a positive introduction to the sounds of the hydrobath and the sensation of the bath mats.
Meet Poppy….the 10 year old, sweet but a little anxious Yorkipoo.
Poppy did very well for her first full groom with me. I already knew that she could be a little particular about certain things when Poppy came for her meet & treat. But on the whole she did so well.
We slowed everything down to make things much more manageable for her and we communicated fantastically.
Well done Poppy! 😊🐾😂
Meet Bob….the most adorable Shihpoo puppy I have ever seen!
Bob had been enrolled onto The Puppy Hut Package Program and was now ready for his first big boy full groom.
We had to be very mindful of the fact that he is only a puppy and that grooming is very overwhelming for all dogs, but especially puppies. With this said and in keeping everything as positive as possible, Bob returned a few days later to do some finishing touches.
Well done Bob! 😊🐾🐾
Meet the bestest boy….Reggie!
A beautiful fox red Labrador who really took his first ever professional groom in his stride 🥰
I was aware that the only thing that was an issue for Reggie was the hairdryer, and so we adapted things for him until we found a method we could use…(Further post to follow on this).
But…..all I can say is….a very WELL DONE and thank you to Reggie’s pup parent Lee for introducing & getting Reggie accustomed to various grooming procedures and social experiences from a very young puppy.
Reggie was an absolute pro in the bath, having his nails trimmed and happy to be on the grooming table. 🥰
He left the salon with a positive experience imprinted on his memory. 🐾
Well done Reggie 😊🐾🐾
Happy 3rd birthday to my sweet boy 🐾🐾
A little snippet of some of what I do as a holistic groomer….

Little Westie Puppy BONNIE on The Puppy Package program. A very gentle introduction to grooming, set completely at Bonnie’s pace.
She was not a fan of the hairdryer, so we tried the brush dryer instead 😊🐾🐾

Bob part 2 on THE PUPPY PACKAGE…
Bob came back to the salon after Christmas for his next session. It is important to note that what gets completed in a session is not fixed and is ALWAYS determined by how the puppy/ dog responds.
BOB’S pup parent, Jo, has been working on building his confidence and getting used to the grooming process at home, taking onboard my instructions… this is imperative as we as groomers only spend a snippet of time with your pup, the rest is down to you.
Bob had his 1st Puppy groom, which consisted of a gentle bath, sanitary trim, and face trim……along with plenty of praise, treats, breaks, play and bucket loads of empathy and patience.
Well done BOB! 🌟🐾🐾
BOB part 1 continued….
Introducing Bob gently and slowly to different equipment in the salon.
Introduction in this session included:
• hairdryer
• clippers
• bath ( not bathing)
• brush
• scissors
BOB part 1…
I have been working with little BOB on THE PUPPY HUT PACKAGE.
Here Bob is only 14 weeks old and this is his first session after his initial complimentary MEET & TREAT.
The 1st session for puppies will always begin with (ACE) Animal Centered Education freework, which helps all dogs, not just puppies to be more confident in different environments and is a rewarding, low level activity.
I cannot stress how important it is to get your dogs acclimatised to grooming as soon as possible in order to prevent any negative associations.
Puppies learn fast, want to please and enjoy new experiences and people when introduced in a calm, positive and gradual way.
Absolutely 💯 but also applies with grooming. Edit “training” to “grooming”.
If only more of us humans educated ourselves, living and working with dogs would be more harmonious.
A very interesting and insightful read about dog behaviour.
All behaviors that dogs exhibit are designed either to access pleasurable situations and desirable objects or to avoid and escape unpleasant situations and undesirable objects. (Note: this is based on what each individual dog considers to pleasant or unpleasant, not the human, and it is important to
Displacement Behaviour….
Ever wondered why your dog will do something unrelated to what you have “asked” them to do?
Displacement behaviour in dogs refers to a behaviour that is displayed in a situation that causes conflicting emotions or motivations, which results in the dog performing a behaviour that is unrelated to the situation at hand. It is often described as a coping mechanism that helps the dog deal with their conflicting emotions.
Here are some common signs to look for:
Pacing: Dogs may pace back and forth when they're unsure of what to do next.
Whining or whimpering: Dogs may vocalise to express their confusion or frustration.
Avoidance: Dogs may avoid eye contact or physically move away from the source of their confusion.
Pawing or scratching: Dogs may paw at the ground, scratch themselves or scratch objects when they're trying to figure out what to do.
Sniffing: Dogs may sniff the ground, themselves, or objects around them to gather more information and try to figure out what's going on.
Picking up a toy: Dogs may pick up a toy and start playing with it, as a way to redirect their focus and reduce their confusion.
Changing the subject: Dogs may suddenly become interested in something else and act as if they're busy elsewhere, as a way to avoid the situation that's causing their confusion.
Insightful information and explanation of what a “reactive dog” actually means.
It is far more complex than what we may think.
“If your dog was trained, you could just tell them to sit and be quiet!”
This is not how reactivity works. It’s a fundamental misconception that a well-trained dog is not a reactive dog … or that a reactive dog is not well-trained.
Whether or not a dog is reactive tells you nothing about the amount of skill training they have received. A dog can *both* be able to perform challenging and complex behaviors … and have intense responses towards certain triggers.
Skill training cannot always overwrite a dog’s emotional state. A dog may be able to “sit and be quiet” with food distractions, while you’re throwing a toy or even in the presence of wildlife … but not be able to do this at all in close proximity to a trigger.
This is really important to understand for both owners of reactive and non-reactive dogs:
If you own a reactive dog, your dog is not missing “obedience training”, as reactivity is not a lack of obedience … it’s a surplus of stress.
If you do not own a reactive dog and think that reactive dog owners just don’t know how to train their dogs to behave … that is also not true. The dogs are *not* poorly *trained*. The dogs are *feeling* poorly near triggers.
Reactivity (or lack thereof) and skills (or lack thereof) are not inherently linked.
There are …
💙 Reactive and very well-trained dogs
🩵 Non-reactive and very well-trained dogs
💚 Non-reactive and poorly trained dogs
💛 Reactive and poorly trained dogs
Don’t discount a reactive dog as one who just didn’t get trained … the topic is much more complex than this.
Beautiful puppies 🥰

Nellie & Star….Puppy Programme. August 23 A quick break and runaround after bath to relieve any pent up anxieties & decompress. I think the garden got a little to exciting! 😂🐾
The little quirky but sweet Clover…. back for her second groom. Was a little more anxious than last time so we took to grooming her whilst admiring the garden. 🥰 #holisticgrooming #consentbasedgroom
Nellie & Star on The Puppy Programme. Quick snippet of Nellie’s gentle introduction to bathing🐾🛁 This is actually session 5 which was a Puppy groom…. We managed a gentle bath, ear clean, blowdry, brush, trim of face & sanitary areas, paw pads and feet. Both Puppies did very well 🥰
PUPPIES!!!!…… I always get so excited when puppy’s come to me for their first introduction to grooming….as a holistic groomer I take puppy introductions super slowly as it is imperative to make this process as stress free as possible & transition at the pups pace…..no rushing.
