The least stressful option!!

Sometimes for our dogs safety and wellbeing, unfortunately we have to do things that they don't want us to do ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

He had laid on a grooming metal comb outside.
It had got tangled in his trousers ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The options I had:
1:Muzzle and tie him up short
2: Muzzle him and ask a friend to hold him
3: Try first as in the video

He is incredibly protective over his hind end due to oestoarthritis in his hips and stifles.

I weighed up my options and as time was also a factor....the longer it was in, the more coat would get caught up and it would be much harder to remove ๐Ÿซค

So I did it as quickly as possible, with stopping everytime he vocalised.
I could have given him something to chew at the same time, but the cupboards are bare! Also anything high value he likes to bury, dig up, bury for awhile first.

He's a big dog and I couldn't accurately lob him treats as I didn't want him moving. If he knew I had treats he would definitely have moved and laid in front of me, so I would be unable to remove the comb ๐Ÿค”

All options would be stressful

I like to think I chose the least stressful.

Self grooming is vital for skin and coat health!

Sabre has dropped a couple of kilos over the last month.๐Ÿฅณ

Being overweight and riddled with arthritis was not good for his already compromised musculoskeletal health!

Being able to self groom and able to bend his body to reach a hind leg is EPIC!

Never get annoyed at the 'lick lick slurp' sound!

Little Boo came for a Discover K9 session yesterday.
We covered predominantly Freework with some basic Pattern Games taught and Reggie the stooge!

Discovery and suggestions:

๐Ÿพ The collar was affecting his neck and head position due to its size and weight
๐Ÿพ A few postural and gait concerns
๐Ÿพ Pattern Games taught and executed well
๐Ÿพ Responsive to the Counting Game when 'stuck'
๐Ÿพ Considerate stroking led to a relaxed tail

Boo went home a happy Chi with homework for his guardian and for Di's Dogs - Pop in and Walking Service

Puppy blues and a pup called Blu!

Blu is only 4 mths old and is like velcro to his Mum. This is a very natural stage in puppy development and needs careful assistance to navigate.

He was worried about me to start with. We stayed outside the front door and did some treat and retreat. Added in a licky mat and a mini snuffle mat. Didn't touch him when he came up to me to investigate.

After 10 mins he had got over his initial wariness and was quite happy for me to come inside. We went straight into the garden.

๐Ÿพ Building confidence to investigate and explore in full view of Mum.
๐Ÿพ Added movement from Mum with observation of his body language
๐Ÿพ Release to familiar items while Mum stays put still in view

These are the very basics of confidence growth, safely changing velcro to elastic.

At the end while we chatting inside, he disappeared!!

He had CHOSEN to go outside on his own ๐Ÿฅณ

This troubled young lad had a Zoom meeting between his Vet, nutrionist- CAB, client and me yesterday

It's been a long journey but we feel as though we are narrowing down where to concentrate on.

He has had a Dynamic Dog Assessment, X rays on his hind end which were cleared by 2 Vets, on a range of meds and currently on an elimination diet.

His behaviour escalation seemingly corresponds when his gut is bad.

Having a team around him will give him the best outcome.

We all have our strengths and specialisms to aid his journey!

Both find it difficult to function without the other one.
One is ball obsessed
The other bird obsessed

I had a morning off today from dogs ๐Ÿ• but best laid plans and all that!!

While setting up the hall for something I had organised, along came Bruno from Macedonia!

Such a gorgeous friendly lad who has settled really well into UK life. As per the guardian breed he does like to lie down and watch the world go by, checking all is well in his little corner of England ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ

Halfway through the event I had organised, in came an unaccompanied Shep! Eeek!
I went outside to see another one appearing around the corner and then a 3rd Shep x wandered round from the field behind!

I was shouting hello hello and went into the field??
No answer and no person ๐Ÿ˜

I saw someone in the driveway of the home nearly opposite, front door open- dogs running back and forth over the road- I held up the traffic and shouted to the young guy who had only stopped because he had nearly hit one a few mins earlier. Luckily they went inside!

"Shut the door after them!"

Then the quick chat about where was the owner?! Was he OK? Just as I was about to go inside to check, the garage door started opening from the inside!

There was the owner totally unaware that his 3 dogs had been out and then reality set in as he realised how lucky it was that none of them had been hit by a vehicle!!

A dog free morning eh? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฃ

Sadly both of Sabres buddies in these pics have passed ๐Ÿฅน

Let's talk briefly about these "funny" photos and memes we see all over the internet

I personally know the context of these 2 photos below, as it is my dog and I took the photos

Look closely ๐Ÿ‘€

The irony of the Shep wearing a yellow NO DOGS vest. Sabre in the stream with her drinking virtually nose to nose.

Dogs cannot read....yes, you read that right.

It is up to us as our dogs guardian, to see the vest and either pop our dog back on a lead, go a different way or at least make space.
It doesn't matter what is actually written on it. You don't need to get closer to read it. The colour and the fact she is on a lead should be information enough.

The meme underneath, the dog Milo is actually guarding the feather duster.
Yes, the meme is funny. But, I see past the funniness

Milo with his paw over it ....mine
Looking up at Sabre with ears back....mine
Sabre standing tall with front legs splayed....ready for action
Sabre with closed mouth....im not sure about this situation

Luckily I recognised this language and communication between them. I intervened and called Sabre away

Things are not always what they seem at first glance

Look closer at what you see and see past what we humans deem 'funny' ๐Ÿคก

Commonly called 'terrier hop'
It is not normal though and needs investigating!

There could be other issues at play, not just the obvious!

Consent!

What does that look like for your dog ๐Ÿค”
Young Magi here is showing some signs of physical discomfort, not just in her posture or movement but in her behaviour

๐Ÿพ Mouthy
๐Ÿพ Busy

We are now working as a team with Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist
She had her first session last week but Claire was unable to treat her due to her behaviour.

Today we started teaching the name of the body area that was going to be touched.
Touch started with the back of hand as cooler.
We started with the areas Magi was comfortable with.

I was paying attention to her body language. Especially her breathing!

She CHOSE to lay down
She also didn't feel the need to mouth as she was being listened to.
Autonomy over her own body will build trust!

Looking forward to this journey of trust ๐Ÿ˜€

I have the pleasure of these 2 boys on and off today.
We have had a few meet and greets over the last few months, needed more as the Lab is a little nervous and in full blown adolescence.

Slow and steady with no pressure to interact with me unless they choose.

As a professional and also the guardian of a dog compromised with oestoarthritis, I totally understand and champion dogs being of an appropriate weight

But it's hard ๐Ÿ˜•

My boy is on the obese scale. Every month he's put on another llb ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I fought for certain blood tests
I engaged the services of a pet nutrionist
I home cooked
I researched

Being overweight means more stress and strain on joints that are already under stress with arthritic changes

Exercise has dropped due to mobility challenges. No more the1-2 hour hikes, more like 2-4 10 minute mooches to keep everything moving.

He has chronic pancreatitis so has to have low fat. This doesn't help him feel 'full'.

But these last few weeks we have found a compromise and ๐Ÿฅณ he has lost this week!

You've heard the saying 'it takes a village to raise a child'?

The same could be said for our dogs and the many excellent pet professionals out there with their individual specialisms

A shout out to

A picture says a 1000 words so they say!

It does when you know what you're looking at and also when there is other consistent evidence.

This little man always arranges his bed/bedding so he can rest with his head and neck raised.
๐Ÿพ This can be indicative of GI and/or spinal discomfort

He doesn't stretch out, always curled with his hind legs towards his head-like a ๐Ÿฆ

He is undergoing a Dynamic Dog Assessment and getting footage like this is worth its weight in 'good boy treats'

We have registered with a new Vet with an orthopaedic specialist on the team๐Ÿคž

This shaggy boy had to escalate his behaviour to biting, before any assistance was sought

Noones fault and definitely no judgement from me.

Help is now here and my finished report will hopefully get him some relief and further targeted investigation ๐Ÿ”Ž

My assessment is hands off and stress free, so his natural behaviours in posture, gait and how he navigates throughout the day are truth.

This is what I see ๐Ÿ‘€ It's heart wrenching Dogs struggle along."Oh he's not in pain because he's not limping"Don't do you...

This is what I see ๐Ÿ‘€

It's heart wrenching
Dogs struggle along.
"Oh he's not in pain because he's not limping"

Don't do your faithful pal an injustice. They do not deserve indifference and do not say to me: he's just old" ๐Ÿ˜”

I find that people tend to ignore the signs maybe hoping it'll go away or "it's not that bad"

Whenever I mention pain/discomfort may be affecting your dogs behaviour to a potential client...I too am ghosted ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Please for your dogs sake realise that there IS something you can do NOW!

If you're not sure please get in contact for a non judgemental chat

Let's make our dogs lives happier โ˜บ๏ธ

Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

An easy stress free walk this morning for our Holiday and Train guest Westley.

We are also doing a Dynamic Dog Assessment for him so photos and footage in the early cool air were taken

Will miss the big bear ๐Ÿป

When introducing a dog to new things we have to start out of context.

Especially for senior dogs who may have some discomfort. They have to feel safe and it is up to us to ensure that.

The aim of this session is apparent in the last few clips of the video.

Now his guardian can go out and buy what is most appropriate for Westley ๐Ÿฅฐ

Which photo would you say is the odd one out?

I know most of you will say the chocolate lab as she's lying down.

In fact none of them are odd ones out!

All of these dogs have 'something' going on affecting them physically and emotionally.

This comes out in their behaviour or lack of!!

When doing a Dynamic Dog Assessment I look for consistency in abnormalities in their postures and gait.
Alongside behavioural information which is their communication ๐Ÿ•

The absence of something eg choosing to sit, is also vital information
