Earlier this week we took part in Quality Improvement days, whilst many of our clients were away at the Royal Welsh.
Being part of a larger group is great for sharing progressive ideas and experiences across the different CVS practices.
Every meeting we discuss what is important to our practices from: new technology, to how to use clinical research funding best across the practices, to creating standard operating procedures.
This week was hosted in South Wales at Dyfed Farm Vets

🌿⚠️One of our farms unfortunately have had a suspected case in a bull ⚠️🌿.
Other plants that look similar are: giant hogweed and parsley. Can be very difficult to identify. So please be vigilant when cattle are grazing

🏆Congratulations to one of our clients Owen Davies for co-winning the Arwain DGC 2024 Livestock Farmer award 🏆

This award is for demonstrating excellent antimicrobial stewardship and was presented to Owen for his continued efforts at reducing his antimicrobial usage💉.
Since implementing SmaXtec boluses on his dairy farm, Owen has integrated several protocols to respond to health alerts 📈. These include CMT testing all mastitis alerts, increased anti-inflammatory usage to all deviations of temperature/ rumination and increased non-antibiotic medicines as supportive treatments to sub-clinical disease alerts.

♨️Have you prepared for the heat?♨️

🥵How many days last year did your cows experience heat stress?
🥵How much milk loss did you subsequently incur?

With the summer forecasted to be hot, having a plan already set in place is a necessity!
❗️Previous studies in 2022 found UK dairy cows experienced as high as 99 days of heat stress between May-December.
🌡As well as the obvious physiological/ behavioural changes seen with heat stress (increased respiratory rate, sweating, milk drop, embryonic losses, increased risk of SARA and increased risk of mastitis), did you know:
🌡with every 1 degree of temperature increase above 21degrees celcius, there is reduced lying down times of approx. 21-22minutes, increasing the risk of solar bruising and sole ulcers.

The new Bovine ImmunIGY kit from tests IgG immunoglobulin levels in calves' blood from 24hrs-6 weeks of age rather than total proteins before 7 days of age. This tests how succesful passive transfer of antibodies through colostrum management has been on the individual calf.
