AMR Awareness Week 18-24th November 2023
Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Month - November 2023
Did you know that it isn't just pets and people that are affected if antibiotics are not disposed of correctly?
The environment is at risk too if antibiotics are disposed of inappropriately e.g. in household waste - this can contribute to antimicrobial resistance in the environment.
Antimicrobial Resistance is one of the biggest global health issues of our time - We must act, together.
The Oak is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. We would love it if our clients can return any unused or out of date antibiotics for us to dispose of safely and responsibly.

Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Month
Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness - how can you - help us - help everyone by reducing antibiotic resistance?
What to do if you have leftover or unused antibiotics:
🐾 Return them to us in Haverfordwest or Fishguard for safe disposal
🐾 Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial resistance and pollute the environment through waterways, affecting our wildlife
🐾 Don't ever give a pet leftover or out of date antibiotics. Using antibiotics when not needed could risk side effects, delay an accurate diagnosis, mean the your pets condition may not be treatable and contributes to antimicrobial resistance.
Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. Please return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe disposal.

Don't forget that it's not just dogs, cats and humans that are feeling the effects of these high temperatures!
Make sure your smaller furries have plenty of shade, constant access to plenty of cool water and check their skin for fly strike (fly eggs and maggots) at least twice daily.

Hot Weather and Water Warning!
With the temperatures soaring, it can be nice to take your dog to the beach in the evenings to cool off. Just a few safety tips to remember...
* If kayaking/paddle boarding with your dog, please ensure they have a correctly fitted life jacket on - even if they are strong swimmers.
* If your dog isn't a strong swimmer, please don't take them into the sea without a bouyancy aid.
* Resist repeatedly throwing balls/pebbles into the sea in order to avoid secondary drowning.
Secondary drowning can be fatal. Secondary drowning is when water (even a small amount) is inhaled into the lungs. This can cause irritation and swelling to the lungs, which can hinder the lungs ability to provide oxygen to the blood stream. As sea water is salty, if inhaled, it could potentially draw fluid from the blood stream, into the airways, resulting in ‘drowning’ them.
Symptoms of secondary drowning are:
*Lethargy *Coughing *Difficulty breathing *Distress *Anxiety *Vomiting *Abnormal gum colour *Cold extremities *Signs of shock
If your pet experiences a near drowning or the above symptoms, please contact your vet as a matter of urgency.
Please don't be alarmed by this post. Education is a good route towards prevention. Enjoy the sun and have fun with your furry friends!
Oak Vets Behind Closed Doors
As the weather gets nicer and government rules are relaxed we'd like to let you know we're carrying on as "normal".
This means continuing with distanced consults in the carpark, wearing our PPE (masks, sterilising between patients +/- gloves, our own leads), before taking your pet in with us for their clinical examination.
Your typical health check goes a little like this.......
We ask that you continue to understand and support us as we try to move back to opening routine appointments. By waiting outside your car ready with your pet you will help things run smoothly. And continuing to protect yourselves, us, and each other by wearing your masks!
For a further explanation of how and why we are continuing to work outside, go to our website at www.oakvetgroup.co.uk and check our latest news.
