Eight standard sizes or opt for a made-to-measure bed for a specific location. Wide choice of colours. Big Dog Bed Company was created to make the beds we couldn't buy - good looking, extra large beds that are firmly filled, waterproof and odour free with a long useful life. Over the last ten years, we have learned a lot about what dogs and their owners want in a bed. Before going to market, every

thing we design is tested for a minimum of a year to make sure it does the job you want. All our beds have high quality foam cushions - there is a choice of seven different styles of cushion, with and without memory foam. Those for everyday use, for in kennels or the car, in crates, if your dog has joint issues or arthritis, or if it overheats easily. Eight standards sizes are available or we can make bespoke to suit your space. All our fabrics are waterproof, antibacterial, urine and stain resistant, and machine washable, but they are also beautiful, hard wearing upholstery fabrics which look good in any room. Keeping moisture out of the bed core ensures that the beds do not smell and your dog dries faster. BDBCo.VET is our veterinary brand for kennel beds, operating table mattresses and positioning aids. We also design and make a growing range of veterinary physiotherapy equipment, much of which can be used in the general fitness training of sports dogs such as those involved with agility, cani-cross and so on.

Where do you get advise about what to feed your dog? And why?

1. Your vet
2. At the pet shop
3. Family or friends
4. On-line from someone claiming to be a specialist
5. From dog groups on social media
6. Library research
7. Or?

Really the same question could be asked for any pet, regardless of species. None of us need to have any training in looking after an animal before we go out and buy one, as far as I'm aware - please let me know if I'm wrong on that.

Hopefully, we are concerned for our pet's welfare so we do the research, but who goes to the library to do so and how do we know that other sources are accurate in what they are telling us? We know there is a lot of nonsense spouted online - possibly more so now people are relying on AI..... Who should be believed?

Is there anyone at your vet practice who is trained as an animal nutritionist?

If you are a vet, do you feel you've received the same level of training in animal nutrition as in other areas of your expertise? Have you done any additional training since your first graduated?

Let me say categorically that this is absolutely not a get at vets post - how could it be - I work with them every day. But the more I've thought about this subject, the more concerned I've become about whether this is actually a real animal welfare issue that is a huge elephant in the room.

We know there is a lot of very poor quality dog food on the market, so there a reasonable chance the same is the case for our other pets.

Do we need to be better informed and where should we get reliable information?

And to close with yet another question - what do you think?

With more individuals having to get to grips with muzzles due to the XL Bully legislation, we think it's an important reminder that we should NOT be using closed mouth muzzles to walk dogs. They MUST be able to pant or they risk heat stroke, especially as the weather gets warmer.

If you need a bite proof muzzle, that also allows dogs to pants, look at communities such as The Muzzle Movement, The Muzzle Up Project and The Bully Boardroom - Public Page for help and support.

Does Muzzle Mean Trouble?

❌No!

➡️Muzzles are an essential piece of equipment in in the dog behaviour world.

➡️A properly fitted muzzle can allow people to safely exercise and socialise their dogs in a safer environment.

➡️Sadly dogs wearing muzzles are subject to judgment.

➡️There are a number of reasons dogs need to wear a muzzle, and none of them mean you have a bad dog! What we do have is a dog that is experiencing the world and an owner who has safe control of their pet.

✅Muzzle training should always be a very positive experience so the muzzle becomes associated with enjoyable experiences like walks, socialising, activities off lead exercise for example. Training may be a slow process but is worthwhile to allow your pet to safely navigate their environment.

➡️There are a number of reasons why a dog may be wearing a muzzle. If you see a dog wearing one:

✅ Recall your dog in case the dog is fear reactive or dog reactive

✅ Communicate with the owner.

🗨️"Hello, how are you? Is your dog okay with my dog or would you like me to move further away?"

In many instances you may help reduce the anxiety of a fear reactive dogs owner who can then safely pass without worrying about unexpected confrontation.
You may also learn that their dog is perfectly fine with dogs and would love to play, and they are wearing the muzzle for other reasons.

These reasons can be:

✅Behaviour
Some dogs need a muzzle to safely exercise in public because they may be reactive of aggressive in certain circumstances. An owner walking a muzzled dog is taking excellent care to provide for their welfare needs to enjoy natural behaviour while still considering the safety of others.

✅ Dogs that scavenge on walks.
This could result in the dangerous ingestion of mouldy foods, or other dangerous objects like stones, large pieces of wood or rubbish and litter left around (P.s please bin your litter!!)

✅ Dogs that are on a medical elimination diet and are not allowed to eat anything else to check for food allergies

✅ Dogs with medical issues like pancreatitis meaning scavenging high fat treats could cause a nasty flare up. Or dogs with diabetes that need to stop grabbing sneaky treats on walks to help control their blood glucose levels.

✅ Dogs who have a high prey drive and may try to catch little animals or even nip other smaller dogs on walks

✅ Dogs that's are perfectly lovely but have been put under restrictions by Breed Specific Legislation like a Pit Bull Terrier or XL Bully.

💚 MAY IS VETERINARY NURSING AWARENESS MONTH

Throughout the month, we're introducing you to our fantastic nursing team, and next up is Amy RVN.

The eagle-eyed amongst you might recognise the gorgeous ginger cat in this pic - Lionel 😻. When this pic was taken, Lionel was a stray, recovering from a car accident. Nursing care and 24hr hospitalisation care played a big role in this lad's recovery.

Happily he is back to full fitness now, and in a fabulous forever home.

For those that missed it, you can read his story here:

We lost our German Shepherd to a drug resistant infection in his bladder. We really must be mindful of how freely these vitally important tools in both our dogs and our own health are used to ensure we continue to have them available in the future. Can you imagine what the world would be like if all antibiotics became ineffective? It's a real possibilty if we don't change how we do things.

“AMR is not just a matter for clinicians - it is important to work across sectors to help preserve these vital medicines to minimise the impact of AMR.”

Almost 8,000 people in the UK die from drug resistant infections every year. If this continues to spread, common infections and injuries that were once easily treatable become harder, and in some cases impossible, to treat.

AMR occurs when bacteria, and other microorganisms, develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, making them less responsive or unresponsive to treatment. Avoiding unnecessary antibiotic usage in humans and animals is crucial to slowing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance.

➡️ Why do we insist on seeing all patients before prescribing antibiotics?

➡️ Many people believe diseases are caused by a bacterial infection, when there is possibly that no antibiotics will be needed at all. The RCVS state: 'You must always perform a physical examination in the following circumstances: when prescribing antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics or antivirals'

The 2023 annual UK-Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance and Sales Surveillance report showed sales of the products were 9% lower in 2022 than the previous year and down 59% overall since 2014.

This is incredible, and there are so many within the veterinary profession who have been a trailblazer in antimicrobial stewardship in the UK veterinary farming industry. Look what can be achieved when we have a collaborative approach from government, veterinary professionals and farmers. Just look at the stats for the use of highest priority critically important antibiotics by food-producing animal species.

We think everyone who has worked towards antimicrobial stewardship in UK food producing animals has a lot to be proud of here.

Whatever language certain TV dog trainers might use to justify their means, there is no excuse for aversive methods.
Abusive or cruel techniques are really just a polite way of saying that someone is inflicting violence and degrading punishments on dogs.
Perhaps we should consider what drives that behaviour in humans and why our societies still sanction this accepted form of violence in human dog relationships.
We don't allow domestic violence, we don't allow corporal punishment of children and it's about time we stopped these methods of dog training too.

I read somewhere recently that you should take some down time with your dog and just sit together. While not side by side, we are enjoying the first warm sunny evening of the summer. He is watching doggy TV in the form of a hare mooching about 200m away, just visible if you zoom right in. He wasn't asked to lie down, he's just doing his thing - being curious.

Hope you've had a good day, whatever form it took.
