When you’re too puppy-tired to play with your ball…
A last minute place has come available on the Puppy Foundation course starting tomorrow morning at 9.30.
Puppies who learn to engage, play appropriately and use their brains to learn cool stuff also know how to settle and rest when they are tired.
Please email [email protected] or via messenger if you would like to join us
Nothing remotely like this, but I am very sorry I am cancelling training today.
The snow forecast is not dramatic but I confess I’m feeling very timorous about venturing onto anything remotely slippery 😱❄️
I will look forward to seeing you all again next week 🌷
All ready for the Puppy Social and Sensory Introduction workshop tomorrow afternoon.
We will start outside with puppy-safe recalls and how to be calm and responsive to their person when other puppies, dogs and people are close by.
The puppies will then have a rest time while we go into the barn where you will have the chance to ask any puppy-related questions.
We will then bring the puppies into the barn to explore lots of different things to climb in, on, walk over, go round or through.
Rubble’s ready!
TRAINING IS RESTARTING AT PAWS IN WALES!!!! 🐳🐾🐳😃🐺🐯🐺🐶
I'm coming up to the six week milestone now, so will be starting training from Saturday 4th March.
To celebrate new beginnings we will be opening with a PUPPY SOCIAL AFTERNOON on Saturday 4th March starting at 2pm and finishing around 4pm. We will stop for refreshments while the puppies have a break. We will cover all and any puppy questions you may have, meeting and greeting manners, puppy biting and jumping up, loose lead walking, recall, crate training, appropriate play and sleep while also having a lot of fun with the puppies.
Please email heather@pawsinwales to book or be added to the newsletter, further information on the website pawsinwales.com
This will also be an opportunity for me to introduce some of you to my new pup, a Border Collie called Rubble. He will be joining the classes and starring in Puppy How To Videos on the Facebook group page.
Saturday afternoon is open to all puppies under six months, the forecast is good so I'm planning for us to be mostly outside. ……..and ended up with dogs jumping over one another…..
Paws up for Puppy Training if this feels familiar!
I have another new six week Puppy Course at Paws in Wales at 6pm on Wednesdays, starting on the 19th October.
This course is for the young puppies under approximately 20 weeks on that date. Over the following two months we will cover all aspects of puppy manners and training and also introduce them to puppy scentwork, parkour, tricks and obedience.
The course is £72 for the six sessions.
Please email heather@pawsinwales to book, limited number of places.

Introduction to Scent workshop Sunday 2nd October 3pm.
If our dogs could choose their own Paws in Wales activity nearly all of them would put their paws up for Scentwork. We will teach the dogs to find specific scents and both freeze with their nose over the scent and to bring a scented article back to you.
It is a perfect activity for the colder months and 20 minutes of sniffing around your house will provide enough mental stimulation to keep your dogs content when the weather restricts walks.
Scentwork is ideal for dogs of all ages from tiny puppies to senior citizens and will enhance your dog’s walks and general relationship with you.
Please email [email protected] to book a place, numbers are restricted. £15 per dog including refreshments
Junior Dog Social, Meet and DON’T Greet with Obstacle Course.
Saturday 23rd July 2pm £10 per dog.
This session is for dogs who are adolescent or inexperienced, who tend to be over excited and find it difficult to ignore other dogs or people. It is NOT for dogs who are anxious or lunge/bark at others - please email me if you are experiencing ‘reactivity’ issues with your dog.
We will practice civilised behaviour when encountering other dogs and adults and dogs, especially how to stay calm and responsive to you.
We will use the outdoor Confidence Course (unless the weather is awful) so the dogs learn to concentrate and engage with you.
Please email [email protected] to book a place.
Puppy Social, Meet and Greet with Obstacle Course.
Saturday 23rd July 10.30am. £10 per puppy.
This session is for young puppies under around five months who are definitely still puppies rather than teenagers. There will be a session for them later the same morning.
We will practice meeting and greeting skills with other puppies, adults and dogs, appropriate play and when to intervene.
The puppies can practice their motor skills and build confidence with a variety of obstacles.
Please email [email protected] to book a place.
(Many of you will have seen this video before - I make no apology as it is one of my all time favourites!)
…..and here is Pebble doing a series of food circuits.
Note how quickly he turns for the recall part as soon as he hears me - he actually called off the food in the second one.
When they are fast and fun like this food circuits are a very high value reward during training as well as one of the foundations of an instant recall.
Here’s Tabby showing how we start a food circuit, teaching our dog to go round behind us.
Dropping the food makes it easier for them to look for it when it is thrown.
Have a look at the handout in Files.

These are fun ‘stand alone’ sessions intended to compliment your home training and any other classes you may be attending.
They are ONLY FOR YOUNG PUPPIES under 16 weeks (small breeds may be a little older).

This is what I have been playing with the last couple of weeks.
I saw a clip on YouTube of Scent Hurdling, which is a mix of Flyball and Scent, and thought it would be fun to adapt it a bit to make an individual rather than team activity and tie in with the things we do at Paws in Wales.
I’m going to add in heelwork, recalls, retrieves and sendaways, plus more jumps, tunnels and obstacles as we go along until the dogs are doing a whole course.
I’m calling this new activity Scent-ob-ility.
