An extraordinary opportunity to visit Jaipur and make a real and lasting difference to canine welfare; a two week trip delivering practical and theoretical lectures and demonstrations to the charity’s staff and introducing ‘modern’ training methods to the increasing number of pet dog owners.

Help in Suffering is one of the main charities in Rajasthan caring for all street animals, in this case of course focusing on dogs.

The Trustees are increasingly forward thinking and are looking for someone who can help people’s understanding of dogs, their emotional well-being and development, under the umbrella of Dog Behaviour.

Jack Reese, the senior vet, was my younger brother’s Best Man, hence my connection. He has spent his entire veterinary career with HiS in Jaipur.
The person they are looking for needs to be confident, tolerant and non-judgemental, with a wide experience of all types of dogs and a solid understanding of canine learning theory.

In Jack’s words “We need a practical down to earth sort who can adapt to different and difficult situations; can cope with lunacy and can speak publically”

HiS will provide you with accommodation and meals, but unfortunately cannot pay.

If you are interested email Jack directly [email protected] or message me and I’ll do my best to help.

Please share as widely as you can - we need an extraordinary person.

We believe that “until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened”.We work towards rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned animals in need with compassion and care.

My apologies but I cannot remember who asked me about the small fleece treat balls.
The larger ones I use come from Paws Trading, but the little ones were from funwithfido.co.uk
I have one left here - if you’re local enough to pick it up it is £8, they are from £13 on the fwf website. Mine’s new, just a bit bitty from being around….
Please email or pm rather than replying here

Start with around 9,000 litres of water from a burst pipe.
Add extraordinarily generous help, effort and support from Alun, Jan, Dyane, Ali, Dave and Carol.
What do you have?
A barely damp barn with almost everything salvaged.
Thank you all doesn’t come close 🙏 🫶☺️ ###

Post from a local Beekeeper 🐝
“Its late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.

Earlier this evening I received a message from a home owner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.

By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.

I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.

We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.

Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your neices and nephews, your neighbours, your colleagues and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.

Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.

Please help me to spread this message and hopefully save any more bees from being unnecessarily harmed” 😢

Today clever Marble won her Rally Obedience class with a remarkable score of 209 / 210 at her second ever Rally Show.
Ferdy was equally on form with a third place in his class, the much more advanced Level 4.
A lovely show, many thanks to the organisers, judges and helpers. We are looking forward to seeing you all again tomorrow.

Yesterday I had the devastating news that Pebble had stomach cancer that had spread to his intestines so we allowed him to pass gently over the Rainbow Bridge while he was still asleep.
Run free dear heart, run free.
There will never be another like you.

Nothing remotely like this, but I am very sorry I am cancelling training today.
The snow forecast is not dramatic but I confess I’m feeling very timorous about venturing onto anything remotely slippery 😱❄️
I will look forward to seeing you all again next week 🌷

All ready for the Puppy Social and Sensory Introduction workshop tomorrow afternoon.
We will start outside with puppy-safe recalls and how to be calm and responsive to their person when other puppies, dogs and people are close by.
The puppies will then have a rest time while we go into the barn where you will have the chance to ask any puppy-related questions.
We will then bring the puppies into the barn to explore lots of different things to climb in, on, walk over, go round or through.
Rubble’s ready!

Tabby says that if I had let her wear her pearly headdress to agility I wouldn’t have tripped over her in the first place so there would be no need for all these hip replacements.
I should have listened.
Paws in Wales is now closed for the time being as I’m having surgery tomorrow so will be out of action for a while.
I will keep the email newsletter up to date with when and what training will be resuming. If you would like to be added please email [email protected] Similarly if you would like to be removed from the list.
The moral of this story? Put a flashing collar on your dog!!!

Please spend 3 minutes reading this note from William Shatner, the actor from Star Trek:

“Last year, I had a life-changing experience at 90 years old. I went to space, after decades of playing an iconic science-fiction character who was exploring the universe. I thought I would experience a deep connection with the immensity around us, a deep call for endless exploration.

"I was absolutely wrong. The strongest feeling, that dominated everything else by far, was the deepest grief that I had ever experienced.

"I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. I didn’t see infinite possibilities of worlds to explore, of adventures to have, or living creatures to connect with. I saw the deepest darkness I could have ever imagined, contrasting so starkly with the welcoming warmth of our nurturing home planet.

"This was an immensely powerful awakening for me. It filled me with sadness. I realized that we had spent decades, if not centuries, being obsessed with looking away, with looking outside. I did my share in popularizing the idea that space was the final frontier. But I had to get to space to understand that Earth is and will stay our only home. And that we have been ravaging it, relentlessly, making it uninhabitable."

-- William Shatner, actor

Sarah Dalesman, who some of you will remember with her dog Patrick, has asked me to post this. I think it will be interesting to join in with.

Participation in a study on dog cognition at Aberystwyth University
We (MRes student Nerys Mellor, Sebastian McBride and I) are conducting a study through Aberystwyth University over the next 8 months to see whether the activities we train our dogs to do affect how they solve simple cognitive tasks. We are interested in testing dogs who currently do training in obedience, scent work or dog agility at any level and in any combination. The tests are suitable for any breed, age or ability. If you think you’d be interested in taking part, and we’d love it if you could, we’re using the attached survey to collect participants information.
If you submit the form, we will then contact you and provide you with a risk assessment, participant information sheet and consent form. You are welcome to withdraw at any point from the study by contacting us after submitting the survey.
Please note, you can enter up to four dogs’ details. If you have fewer than this, please scroll to the end of the survey to submit. If you’re happy to contribute to our research, please fill in the survey and we’ll be in touch.

The following survey is focused on the general and training background of your dog and should take no longer than 15 mins to complete. All participants will remain fully anonymous and have the right to withdraw from the study at any time.

Introduction to Scent workshop Sunday 2nd October 3pm.
If our dogs could choose their own Paws in Wales activity nearly all of them would put their paws up for Scentwork. We will teach the dogs to find specific scents and both freeze with their nose over the scent and to bring a scented article back to you.
It is a perfect activity for the colder months and 20 minutes of sniffing around your house will provide enough mental stimulation to keep your dogs content when the weather restricts walks.
Scentwork is ideal for dogs of all ages from tiny puppies to senior citizens and will enhance your dog’s walks and general relationship with you.
Please email [email protected] to book a place, numbers are restricted. £15 per dog including refreshments

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone.
Silence the piano and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message She is Dead.
Put crepe bows around the necks of public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

She was our North, our South, our East and West,
Our working week and our Sunday rest.
Our noon, our midnight, our talk, our song,
We thought that love would last forever, we were wrong.

The stars are not wanted now, put out every one.
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun.
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood,
Then pledge ourselves to King Charles and all that is good.

With thanks to W H Auden
