I do see so many more a**l gland issues now as a vet then I did 14 years ago when I qualified. Perhaps diet related? Breed related? Lifestyle related?

These smelly little glands can cause a whole array of symptoms when full and even lead to a painful abscess. A firm poo does helps to keep them empty, so adding fibre to the diet can be extremely useful. Fibre can be added daily.

Fibre is especially helpful when a dog has diarrhoea to help firm the poo, and to keep the tum tip top!

On sunny days, pavements can get too hot for dogs to walk on.

To check, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds; if it’s too painful for your hand, then it’s too painful for your dog’s paws. Find out more: thekennelclub.org.uk/hotpavements.

Encouraging dogs to sniff on walks is not only natural and instinctual for them but also has many benefits for their physical and mental well-being.

Sniffing provides mental stimulation for dogs, which is important for their overall mental health.

A good sniff also helps them to learn about their environment, identify scents, and understand the world around them. Through sniffing they can also release pent-up energy, which can help to reduce behavioural problems.

Additionally, sniffing can help to alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable on walks.

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language to tell if they're starting to feel uncomfortable ⚠️🐶

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite 😟

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder.

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the specific order.

Food works as positive reinforcement by activating the brain's reward system, specifically the mesolimbic dopamine pathway.

When a dog receives a treat for displaying desired behaviour, the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, motivation, and learning. This process reinforces the neural connections related to the behaviour, making it more likely to be repeated in the future.

Food's inherent value as a primary reinforcer stems from its biological importance, satisfying hunger and providing energy. Consequently, using food rewards in training capitalises on this innate value, effectively shaping and strengthening desired behaviours through neurochemical reinforcement.

Dogs can't tell you when they are in pain but here are some indicators to look out for x

Dogs can't tell us they are in pain, it's up to us to notice it and make the connection. We must advocate for them and to do that we must educate ourselves.

Dogs don't have good or bad behaviours, they only have natural behaviours.

When all their needs are met, we can use positive, reward based training to harness the behaviours we want to see more of.
