A case of multiple cracks this time. This horse was presented with a complete crack in 3 out of 4 feet.

The before photos show an imbalance in each foot along with extremely long toes in the front feet. Another issue was long unsupported heels, these can cause other problems if left untreated such as abscesses and bruises.
All of these factors have contributed to the cracks forming in the feet.

There is evidence that attempts have been made to fix these cracks, however the fundamental problems that have caused it need to be resolved before the cracks will be able to knit back together.

The after photos show the difference after a correct trim combined with more supportive shoes being applied. The trim was aimed at trying to return the medio-lateral balance along with returning the heels to the widest part of the frog. Returning the heels to their correct level will allow the foot to expand on loading correctly, this in turn will allow the frog to contact the ground. The frog contacting the ground helps with shock absorption and venous return.

The shoes were applied in a way to support the feet and limbs in any aspect. The shoes have been set under the toes in order to move the break over point back, along with allowing for any excess hoof wall to be trimmed off.

All of these changes should mean a more comfortable horse and should help the cracks to repair.

Some before and after photos of a lovely 7 year old gelding. His feet required a good rebalance and trim, alongside this more support was required to allow for expansion of the hooves on loading. The support was given to also allow for the growth during his shoeing cycle, this should mean he still has a good amount of support when we return to reshoe him again.

You can see from the before photos that he had medial lateral imbalance on all 4 feet, this meant pressure was increased on the medial aspect of his legs, long term this can contribute towards other ailments.
He also had quite long toes, which could cause more pressure to be placed on the tendons and ligaments within the limb.
Every 1cm of excess toe can put up to 50kg of extra strain on the tendons and ligaments within a limb.
On one of his hind feet he has a lateral superficial quarter crack which is there from a previous injury to the coronary band and the structures above. This should not cause any issues long term and is just a blemish on his hoof.

The after photos show the difference in his feet once they had been trimmed correctly and had the shoes applied. He stood much more symmetrically and loaded all 4 feet in a balanced way.

Just a simple before and after to show the level of support that is needed by this horse.

There is a slight imbalance in some of the hooves which over time could cause other ailments to become apparent. Trimming to reduce this imbalance along with supporting the limb correctly should reduce any risk of further complications.

The extra support helps with the foot flight and foot fall of the horse in order for him to land flat and level, while also allowing for greater support when completing difficult dressage moves.

Something a bit different today, horses, ponies and donkeys aren’t the only ones who need their feet maintained. Today it was Bills turn to be pampered much to his dismay! He did get yummy snacks though, so it wasn’t all bad 🐐

3 lovely donkey trims from today.

A donkeys hoof has the same fundamental structure as a horse or pony, however they are designed to be in hot dry countries. They have much straighter heel quarters. They also have larger horn tubules than horses & ponies. This means that their hooves are more susceptible to moisture & dirt ingress, which allows bacteria and fungus to take hold causing seedy toe and white line disease.

Ways to overcome this can include;
-Give them a dry area to stand on to allow their feet to dry
-Antibacterial & antifungal agents
-Trying to reduce the need for rasping the front of the foot.

Some before an after pictures of a pair of fronts on a pony that suffers with seedy toe. The conformation of this pony also means that it requires more support on the medial aspect of its legs!
You can see the treatment of the seedy toe is ongoing but is slowly improving, it takes a long period of time for the hoof wall to grow down while keeping the fungal and bacterial infection at bay.

This endurance Arab required a bit more support on one of her hinds, she was wearing the outside branch of the shoe and stepping across herself further than she should.
This could have caused interference with her other legs at higher speed.
Adding the extra width to the shoe allows her limb to be correctly supported and aids the flight and foot fall to be more level, ensuring a reduced risk of injuries.
