Reading List

Keeping up to date with the latest developments in Canine Science is important as modern science and especially genetics is revealing remarkable insights into dog evolution, behaviour and breeds. Equally it requires a strong grounding in the classic works of Dog Behaviour such as Coppinger, Miller, Donaldson and Lindsay. Meet Your Dog – K Brophey & R Coppinger – Highly recommended, if you want to understand your dog better, in my opinion this is the best book to help you do so. The Culture Clash – J Donaldson

The Other End of The Leash – P McConnell PHD

The Power of Positive Dog Training – P Miller

How Dogs Think – S Coren PHD

How to Speak Dog – S Coren PHD

Decoding Dogs: Inside the Canine Mind – E Furlong

Easy Peasy Doggy Squeezy – S Mann

Don’t Shoot The Dog – K Pryor

The Domestic Dog – J Serpell et al

Dogs – R&L Coppinger

Handbook Of Applied Dog Behaviour & Training – S Lindsay

Dog Bites – D Mills & C Westgarth ed

The Genius of Dogs – B Hare & D Woods

Interesting comment from one of the behaviourists on the course last week. “Look at texts from the 60’s & 70’s on dog breeds if you want a more honest description of many breeds original purpose and personality…” so I found this 1968 gem in Abebooks and the honest writing on various breeds is quite different from how we now view many dogs and breeds.

A quick update on Milo - our boy is still poorly, diagnosis has changed from pancreatitus to gastroentiritus or possibly an inflamed gut. He's feeling pretty hang dog, but hopefully will feel ok to join the Big Dog Walk on Sunday.

Never cooked so much healthy food for a dog, only for it not to be eaten!

Absolutely delighted to welcome Leah to the D4dogwalking team. Leah joins us next week, initially on a part-time basis.
Leah has an excellent rapport with dogs and has lived and known a video variety of dog breeds from Spaniels to St Bernards.
Leah will be working alongside Jared and Vicki while she becomes familiar with client dogs and D4Dog’s way of working.

A cautionary tale. Our rescue dog Milo had been a little whingy the last few night. No other indicators of anything being amiss. Then yesterday he stopped eating and of more concern wasn’t drinking.
Following an emergency trip to the vet this morning, Milo has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis 🥺.
Boring low fat diet for Milo the next 2-3 weeks. Hopefully a speedy and complete recovery.
Note to self pay more attention to the dog - he might be telling you something important!

A client is happy for us to share this little story;

Initial enquiry in August - "We are looking for some support with our reactive dog Bonnie, she’s a Bernese mountain dog crossed with a Newfoundland. She’ll be 3 in October. Since 12 weeks of age Bonnie has been difficult to manage and we have seen numerous trainers and behaviourists to try and work on that.

She is loads better than she was but we still have difficulty with her reacting to new people or any strangers and on walks when she sees other dogs. She can come across quite aggressive with her reaction and tends to growl and bark a lot. We have our ways of managing her but it would be nice if our lives could be made a bit easier because it is really difficult sometimes and makes her out to be a horrible dog when she’s not at all.

We live in Torquay and would appreciate any help we could get."

Following an assessment, a training plan and several training session (and joining the October Bid Dog Walk!) we received the following up date!

"We did it!!! Managed to take her for the dog walk with my friends that I’ve wanted to do for ages!! She was good as gold!!

She was amazing!! Her recall has improved too! Not one grumble! Can finally say I enjoy taking her out!!"
