Sound on!!
This is the sound of a pup enjoying themselves. It is also the sound of a pup not stealing shoes, socks, children’s toys and not chewing on the furniture!
By giving your pup activities to do throughout the day you will reduce incidences of what many people would class as ‘naughty’ behaviour.

Freedom, I’m off, see ya!!
Freedom, I’m off, see ya!
Sound familiar?
If your pup pal does a runner as soon as their feet hit grass doing some fun focus work can make walks more enjoyable.
Working with this distinguished gentleman pup today he did a great job learning that mum can be fun to stick around.

Building a trusting relationship with your pup pal.
This week saw a revisit to a previous Puppy class client.
Due to unforeseen circumstances this 11 month old Rottweiler needed to learn how to walk next to a mobility scooter.
There was a very minor hesitation at the start due to the surprise of the motorised vehicle but then settled into this beautiful loose lead walking like she had always walked this way.
The success of this is largely built on the trust that she has in her owners. She has only been taught positively with reward based training and has confidence that her owners will help her through anything.
Taking the time to build a great bond with your puppy pal based on a mutually trusting relationship will reap the benefits for both of you.

Social skills
Helping your pup pal with their greeting behaviours is an important essential part of training.
Taking the time to teach good social skills means they will be prepared and able to cope with dogs they meet when out and about.
The pup on the left is still learning and is very keen to come for a greeting. The one on the right had no interest in engaging in this excitable behaviour and actively turns away as a clear signal he is not interested.
Learning how to read social interactions will help you understand how to help your pup.

Anxious dog?
This lovely lady had got herself worried about going outside after being scared by some fireworks.
Through working on some games and confidence building she is back to loving her walks and is keen to go out exploring again.
Is your dog reluctant to go out? Do they dread the sight of the lead? Get in touch with @Poppetsdogtraining for more information. 😊🐾
Reactivity
Lunging, barking, snapping, growling, all these behaviours can lead to a dog being labelled as reactive.
What it doesn’t do is say why they act the way that they do and this is very important when working on reducing these behaviours.
Our pup pals can ‘react’ when scared, frustrated and overexcited for example.
This little cutie would fall under such a label but, with her owner has worked incredibly hard to get where she is now. There is no way she would have been able to be this close, on a loose lead just a few weeks ago. She is not ‘cured’ but is well on the way.
For those of you with an interest in canine communication, can you spot the calming signals both of these pups are showing?

Loose lead walking
Having your pup walk on a loose lead is something most people would like.
There is only one guaranteed way to achieve this…. training.
It doesn’t matter what lead, collar, harness or head collar you use, they are only aids to your training.
Taking the time to teach your pup pal how to walk with you will mean you can enjoy many happy relaxed adventures together.

Recall
So proud of this little lady!
Being a Beagle she is rather fond of a good smell and can get lost in her own scenting world.
Through providing her with structured scenting and tracking work, alongside lots of focus and fun work with her Mum, she has made great progress with her recall.
Watching your pup pal explore freely with the peace of mind of having a good recall is a great thing to watch.

Recall
Being able to recall your pup pal is really important.
Today we hired a secure field and used a long line to be able to practise how we wanted the recall to look.
Using the right incentive, in this case, praise and treats, this little pup did a great job of returning to her owners.
From here we can practise in local fields to hone the skills we have started teaching today.

Line work
Line work.
Using a line can give your pup some freedom whilst working on focus and recall.
This pup has previously had free access in this field and would take the opportunity to ‘run for the hills’. This video was taken after just 10 minutes of line work!

Social interactions.…
Whilst it is important our pups can socialise with other dogs, we often need to help them out with what is appropriate play.
The video shows my little man as a pup thinking that is ok to hang on the spaniels ears. These two were good friends and a certain amount of unruly behaviour will be tolerated, however, with a strange dog, this isn’t appropriate.
Through the group classes for young and juvenile pups at Poppet's Dog Training you can learn how to read your pup pals style of play to help them get the best out of their mind nteractions.
During the hot weather when you can’t get out walking with your pup pal it’s important to find ways to keep them mentally stimulated to prevent them looking for mischief.
Odie had a great time finding his favourite ball amongst other toys and then playing ball bobbing with it.

Receiving a video and comments like this from a former pupil of Poppet's Dog Training makes me so proud of the work that my pupils put into their training. 🥰🐾
“When we first met Rachel Reggie was very overexcited to put it mildly. Couldn’t manage his emotions and reactions to just about anything
He would bark at anything and everything , try and chase cars, go crazy at dogs and cats
After 6 sessions and a lot of advice and support he is like a different dog
Walks by our side , minimal reactions and we actually dropped his lead at the park the other day and he stayed with us
Something I NEVER thought we would be able to do
We have the odd bad day but very few and far between now and If I need any advice I can contact for help
Such a pleasure to now walk and explore different environments together
Just amazing service - highly highly recommend 🏆”
This lovely lady is affectionately termed as being a bit bonkers!! She loves absolutely everybody and feels she needs to share that love with everyone she meets.
Today we worked in the town centre and with some tweaks to how the lead is handled, some planning ahead and looking at how you can use the layout of the town to introduce some natural groundwork, she did an amazing job and really regained her focus. Well done!!

New pupils to Poppets school of pups.
Lovely relaxed greetings around the groundwork equipment.
The aim of the equipment is to give the pups something else to focus on and allows for calmer casual meetings and not just a free for all.

Would you like to be able to enjoy a relaxing walk with your pup pal?
Pulling on the lead is a problem that won’t go away on its own, we need to show our pups how to walk with us as few will naturally meet our stride and quite frankly, we can be a bit of a bore when we go out.
One of the first things I teach is how to better engage with your pup.
One of the first things I do, is put them on a longer lead. This often raises a few questioning looks, but with correct lead control can often work a treat.

Beautiful evening training yesterday at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre & Country Park, Leicestershire, UK.
We looked at ways to manage the brothers anxiety around other dogs and people. They are both learning fast and mastering a quieter way. Well done boys.

It was me at school today!
Spent a great few hours topping up my skills with the person who first got me hooked on training. Thank you so much Marie for sharing your knowledge.
Groundwork and balance were the lessons of today.
Both can help improve how our pup pals move, both on and off the lead.
All the skills I have learnt today will be making an appearance in Poppet's Dog Training sessions. 😊🐾
In typical Pug fashion, this little chap has a lot to say for himself, especially when other dogs are around!!
This is his 4th session with me, but first time on a long line and he did an amazing job of staying with mum. There are dogs just out of view and he did so well, having a look but them focussing back on mum.
Well done Reggie!!😊🐾
Do you have a rather shouty pup pal? Get in touch with Poppet's Dog Training do learn how to find a quieter way to walk. 😊🐾
Excellent morning at Wolvey Dog Walking Field.
The older pups practiced some focus and lead work.
The younger pups was all about the recall.
Great job by everyone, well done! 😊🐾
