Everyone is amazing with dogs these days aren’t they… NO. If someone tells you their dog is nervous make sure you listen to them and RESPECT their wishes that you ignore their dog and not approach their personal space. You’re not entitled to touch someone else’s dog just because you believe they’re cute. Is this something you have to deal with and does it set you back in training? Vote below ⬇️

One of the worst phrases you can shout to excuse your laziness, lack of effort in training and your incompetence to control your dog is… ‘oh my dogs friendly’… as mentioned above how about shouting all that instead as we know it’s the truth instead of the lie you do tell. Who agrees? Vote below ⬇️

Most breeds won’t settle for just a stroll around the block they need enough physical and mental stimulation that fulfils their needs daily. An unfulfilled dog will cause your problems you’re definitely not prepared for. The number 1 thing your dog needs from you is your TIME

Our Latest White Cap

Today we had a Private session with Lewis from Manchester K9 Academy and both him and Ovi smashed it!

They’ve come straight into the programme at white three stripes because of ability and attitude.

Lewis is always asking the right questions, always training the right way and I see a blue cap in his future this year for sure.

You Both Need A Break - If your dealing with reactivity one of the best things you could do is take breaks away from the stress of dealing with it. YOU and your DOG need it. Don’t hide yourself away from the world because over time that makes it worse but definitely limit the exposure you have and build on that over a period of time. From time to time have a day off go in the middle of nowhere and just enjoy being together… you’ll both appreciate it

Puppies Can Walk To Heel - It’s important you let a puppy explore the world that’s a big part of their development but there’s nothing wrong with implementing your expectations either. If you don’t reinforce pulling at an early age they’ll grow up never knowing what pulling is and you’ll never have that headache of being pulled from pillar to post

Your Puppy Needs To Have Fun - A dog that was designed for a purpose in life doesn’t just want to learn the basic sit,down,paw commands you are generically told to teach them at puppy class. That’s like working a boring 9-5 job for a boss you can’t stand. Work on relationship first built around fun and engagement. Set your rules and expectations for them in life. Once your dog thinks you’re an amazing person to listen to they’ll happily do all that boring work for you knowing that FUN will follow it

Don’t Rush Progress - In life people if possible would try and cut corners to reach their goals. I can safely say dog training doesn’t work like that. If you rush you’ll never achieve. Set yourself small goals that are achievable and as long as you see progress that’s all you can ask for. Get 1% better everyday. Have an expectation but be realistic with what is doable

Reactivity Doesn’t Fix Itself - Dealing with reactivity can be a nightmare for both owner and dog. The longer you leave it without help, the worse it becomes. Ovi my Dutch Shepherd he came to live with us around 18 months old, he was reactive towards other dogs and men. I’m proud to say we kicked reactivity in the a**e and he now helps me in sessions with other dogs with reactivity. It takes a long time to overcome, there’s no quick fix. Get some help and stick with it… IT WILL BE WORTH IT

Do you have a plan - An owner without a plan will own a dog without a purpose. That’s not a good combination. It will create an unfulfilled dog. Most people stuck in this situation won’t get out of it without professional help. Have a detailed plan from day one so you don’t have to undo the mistakes down the line

Good Balanced Training - Isn’t about punishing and suppressing behaviours, it’s about communicating in the most effective way for the dog in front of you to learn. A good balanced trainer uses a lot of positive methods during training but I want you to ask yourself this question… could a dog positively reinforce another dog? NO IS THE ANSWER… a dog uses negative methods to teach another dog so if used reasonably, why shouldn’t we use it?

One Day At A Time - Whatever your goal is with your dog it doesn’t happen overnight. There’s no magic wand that gives you the result. Enjoy the journey and don’t be too hard on yourself or your dog. Making mistakes is apart of the process. Keep showing up everyday for your dog

Prove Them All Wrong - Everyone has opinions especially these days on certain breeds of dogs. Don’t give anyone a reason to doubt your handling skills or your dogs temperament. Be the best version you can and paint your breed in a good light

Breed Specific Training - Dogs were designed in life to carry out a purpose and genetically they have needs that HAVE TO BE fulfilled. When training your dog take their breed into account and try to replicate what they do best in a controlled manner. You’ll see a much happier dog and more importantly a tired dog

All shapes & sizes - Dog reactivity isn’t breed specific it can be something we can go through with any dog we have. The problem is it takes a lot of time and effort to overcome and most people can’t manage it daily and they struggle without getting help. The longer it goes on for the worse it gets. Get the help as soon as reactivity starts

There’s more you can do - When you take your dog out for a walk simply break that walk down and do something different. Use things in the environment to have some fun or overcome challenges together. Your bond will become so much stronger and your dog will have something else to focus on

Dogs do talk - They actually do communicate with us but you need to know how to listen. It’s such a common thing that dog owners aren’t able to get their dog to do what they want because one they don’t know what the dog wants and two the dog doesn’t know what the owner wants. Figure out how you can communicate and life is so much easier

Choose the breed wisely - Before choosing your next dog make sure you know that breed inside out and when you feel like you know everything about them… do some more research. So many people get a breed they aren’t prepared for. So many people end up well out of their depth just because the dog they choose is far more dog than they can handle. Be responsible with your choices
