AKA Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis is a contagious disease that spreads rapidly in the summer months, usually within youngstock. Itโ€™s caused by Moraxella bovis, of which nuisance flies can act as a vector.

In most cases, there will be tear staining of the face, pain associated with sunlight which can disrupt grazing patterns, pus and matting of the eyelids. If both eyes are affected then it can lead to temporary blindness.

Prompt treatment, including pain relief, is essential, but speak to your vet first as other things can look the same such as foreign body in the conjunctival sac (grass awns), bovine iritis and IBR.

In some cases, M. Bovis will be brought in with new stock, so always isolate or manage as one group away from the main herd. Fly control measures are never absolute, so itโ€™s best to be vigilant and consistently check stock.

Three ways to minimise toxo risk:

๐Ÿˆ Restrict cat access to water and feeding areas, particularly where pregnant ewes are housed.

๐Ÿ€ Implement effective rodent control using healthy, dewormed cats.

๐Ÿฆ Ensure comprehensive prevention of infectious causes of abortion by covering all feed and deterring wild birds from gaining access.

Did you know that there are three types of haemonchosis?

Acute โžผ animal presents with sudden onset anaemia and sometimes sudden death due to high worm burden and high blood loss. Often seen in young animals or animals with a low body condition score that cannot produce red blood cells fast enough to replace those lost.

Sub-acute โžผ Occurs when red blood cells are produced at the same rate as they are lost to the parasite, however this puts a drain on the bone marrow supply and often progresses to acute disease. As well as the chance of progressing to acute disease, sub-acute haemonchosis causes lethargy, slow growth rates and weight loss.

Chronic โžผ Usually with a low burden where the affected individual(s) can produce red blood cells faster than they are lost to the parasite, although pallor and a low level of anaemia are often seen and sometimes weight loss due to the persistent protein drain. A โ€˜bottle jawโ€™ can also be seen in some cases.

We have recently identified Haemonchus contortus on our pastures!

Haemonchus contortus, also known as the barber's pole worm, is a very common parasite and one of the most pathogenic nematodes of ruminants. This parasite is responsible for anemia, oedema, and death of infected sheep and goats, mainly during summer in warm, humid climates.

Haemonchus is most commonly seen in the UK from late spring until autumn; the eggs donโ€™t survive well over winter but in warm and wet conditions the eggs hatch rapidly and pastures become highly infective, resulting in very rapid and severe disease.

Last night the Flock Health Club gathered for a talk from guest speaker Connor from Bimeda. Connor discussed mineral deficiencies in sheep; how to identify, treat and prevent. Bimeda produce the Cosecure bolus range for cattle and sheep. This talk was prompted by a recent surge in cobalt deficiency identified in the area.

A huge thank you to Connor and Bimeda for the talk and for providing the food and refreshments ๐Ÿ˜‹ it was a fantastic opportunity for our clients to put forward questions to the experts on this newly emerging problem.

If anyone would like to discuss investigating deficiencies further and methods in which to prevent them then please call the office on 01736 362215 or email [email protected] ๐Ÿ‘

A couple of weeks ago vets Rachel and Rosie B attended to 3 goats who had been attacked by an off lead dog. This 18 week old kid was the worst off; she was in a lot of shock and required 25 staples and 2 stitches to patch her up. Rachel re-visited yesterday to remove her staples and stitches. With some TLC, and physio from her dedicated owners, she is well on her way to a full recovery.

This is a reminder to please keep dogs on lead when around live stock. The events were very traumatic and could have been life changing for these young animals.

We are so pleased with the improvements shown by these goats following the attack, and look forward to seeing them continue to regain their confidence ๐Ÿ

Early treatment is crucial, but prevention is best!

๐Ÿฎ Use fly control like pour-on or insecticide tags.
๐Ÿฎ Avoid grazing near hedges or shrubs (fly havens!).
๐Ÿฎ Consider teat sealants for heifers.

You wait ages for one cow foot fact and eight come at once ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿฎ

Fewer Fingers, More Toes: Cows stand on just two "toes" per foot, kind of like walking on tiptoe! These toes are like our middle and ring fingers, with the dewclaws representing our index and middle fingers. Thumbs? Cows lost those in the evolutionary shuffle.

Weighty Responsibility: Imagine carrying over 165kg (front legs) or 135kg (back legs) on your tiptoes! That's the weight a typical 600kg cow supports on each slender leg.

Tiptoe Walkers: Cows are true tiptoe walkers, with their hooves (like our fingernails) taking the brunt of their weight.

Hidden Comfort: Recently discovered, cows have a built-in shock absorber! A fatty pad called the digital cushion sits between their hoof and inner foot, acting like a comfy insole.

Fast-Growing Floors: The horn that makes up a cow's hoof grows continuously from the "quick" (like our nail bed) at an impressive rate of 5mm per month.

Calving Curveballs: When a cow gives birth, a hormone shift actually causes the bones in its feet to sink slightly.

Lameness Leaves a Mark: Repeated foot problems can permanently alter the structure of a cow's foot, highlighting the importance of keeping them healthy.

Trimming Talk: For optimal cow health, proper hoof trimming is key. Aim for a length of 85mm for dairy cow toes, not 75mm, to avoid over-trimming and potential discomfort.

When vaccinating for ovine abortion, you want to ensure you plan ahead - speak to the practice as soon as possible to ensure we can secure you stock.

There's generally a 4 month window for vaccination - 4 months to 4 weeks before tupping. This will depend on the vaccine datasheet which your vet can advise you on.

If your vet diagnoses an abortion issue on farm, that can be improved with immunisation; the cost of abortions outweighs the cost of vaccination. Many farmer see benefits where they didn't realise there was a problem. having healthier and more viable lambs born, increased productivity and better lambing figures.

27/05/2024

The total lifespan of a fly is estimated to be 15-25 days. By the 12th day, a fly will reach maturity and after this point, females can lay over 500 eggs usually in batches of 75 โ€“ 150. Thatโ€™s a quick population increase once those 500 eggs reach maturity, usually two weeks.

Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s important to have a strategy for all the stages of the fly-berg. Simply tackling the adults may not decrease your population on farm because the females might have already laid their 500 eggs somewhere.

Cleanliness is key to reduce your overall population โ€“ displacing and removing their breeding ground, but there are other products available to keep on top of that 85%, including parasitic wasps โ€“ an organic solution.

On Monday night vets Rachel and Rosie held a meeting for the Flock Health Club on Iceberg Diseases. The members learnt about these diseases that can often go unnoticed for a long time. When one animal is diagnosed it is often the tip of the iceberg in terms of the damage that has already been done to the whole flock. The event was held at the Waterside Meadery, Penzance where everyone enjoyed a meal whilst catching up after the talk. The event was kindly sponsored by Virbac who produce a vaccine to help control Ovine Johnes Disease; one of the diseases discussed on the night.

If interested in joining the Flock Health Club then please call the office on 01736 362215 and ask to speak with either Rachel or Rosie. ๐Ÿ‘

Weaning can be one of the most stressful times for calves.

To make it easier, here are three top tips gathered from a range of farms!

๐ŸฎTry to carry out disbudding, castration, or vaccination in plenty of time before weaning to help keep stress to a minimum.

๐ŸฎWeaning should be based on concentrate intake as opposed to weight, age, or size, so if youโ€™re struggling to get calves onto pellets, it could be an option to start them on a blend.

๐ŸฎFresh water! Keep the supply fresh and clean enough that you would drink it yourself.

Keeping your dogs on a lead (especially during lambing season) can make a big difference!

Sheep worrying isn't just a minor inconvenience; it poses a serious threat to livelihoods and animal welfare. When dogs chase, attack, or stress out sheep, it can lead to devastating consequences. Pregnant ewes and their unborn and newborn lambs are particularly vulnerable, and even a brief moment of freedom for an unleashed dog can result in serious injury or death.

As responsible dog owners, it's important to recognise the impact our pets can have on rural communities. By keeping our dogs on a lead near fields with livestock, we not only comply with legal obligations but also show respect for farmers and the animals they care for.

By taking simple steps like keeping our dogs on a lead, we can help ensure the safety of our countryside for all. Join NSA's campaign by sharing this message on social media and let's make a positive impact together!
