This evening’s meet the team features Sarah from reception, now a familiar face to most of you 😊

🔸 What’s your favourite animal? An emu! I think they’re brilliant! I’m also a huge horse lover 🐎

🔸 Do you have a stand-out memory from your time working with us? It would have to be a certain patient (he knows who he is!) p*eing for me for the first time! An English Bull Terrier who loves Amanda so much, he always gets so excited when he sees her that he has a little p*e. After I'd been here for a year (and when Amanda was on holiday) he did his first p*e for me, I was honoured!

🔸 What’s your favourite thing to do with a day off? Visit Sancreed Beacon, I grew up nearby and love to go horse riding there.

Thanks Sarah 😊

Today, our meet the team post is all about our senior nurse Kathryn:

🔸 What’s your favourite animal?
This is an easy one to answer as for me, it would have to be the sea turtle. 🐢 I just think they’re amazing! To see them in their natural habitat is a truly magical experience. They are super useful too as they help to maintain the health of hugely important seagrass beds and coral reefs. Without them our blue planet wouldn’t be complete.

🔸 And your most memorable case?
I seem to have a theme as one of the most memorable cases would be a very sick 100 year old tortoise that came into the practice. Sadly, the owners could no longer care for her, so we agreed to take her on and nurse her. She fully recovered and 20 years later she’s still part of our family and a very bossy tortoise too!

🔸What’s your favourite thing to do on day off?
My favourite way to spend a day off is walking and running the coast path with our lurcher, Jasper, with coffee and cake in a café looking out to sea. Or a very close second would be a walk around one of the beautiful gardens in Cornwall, again with coffee and cake to complete it! 🌸 🌼

Thanks Kath, hopefully the mud will dry up soon and you can be out on the trails! 🤗

Our next team member is vet nurse Sarah 🤗

🔸What’s your favourite animal?
My favourite animal is probably a Jersey cow. They are super cheeky and inquisitive. They are always the first ones to break through the fence, but also the first to come up and lick you in the face! They all have different personalities and I love that about them.

🔸Can you share a memorable patient with us?
It would have to be Kellogg! Kellogg was a stray cockerel who came into work several years ago. He was in a very bad way and had a ruptured eye. One of the vets gave him a general anaesthetic, removed the eye and he recovered really well. After a few days of not being able to find a home for him, I rescued him and he is now very happy pottering around the farm. 🐓 🥰

🔸 Favourite thing to do with a day off?
This would be taking my two kids to the beach on a sunny day. Kennack is my favourite and we always make sure we collect some rubbish from the beach and dispose of it before we go home as our very small way of helping our oceans!

Always looking to help out the animals, Sarah makes a brilliant, caring vet nurse and is a great person to work with! ☺️

🔸This Monday’s team member is vet Hannah

🔸What’s your favourite animal ? I like all animals, but definitely have a soft spot for the cats. 🐈‍⬛ They have very unique behavioural traits and it's a privilege when they show us their trust and affection, as we have to earn it first.

🔸Most unusual case? Nearly every day in this job I see something new, but one case in particular sticks in my mind. As a newly qualified vet I had what I thought was going to be an easy lump removal from the inside of a cats leg. However, the “lump” ended up being the cat’s own intestines which had herniated and were stuck to the inside of the cat’s thigh! Not the mass removal I was expecting, however we were able to get everything back where it should have been and the cat went on to make a full recovery.

🔸What’s your favourite way to spend a day off? This would be going for a walk along the coast path, stopping for a sea swim or to read my book up a tree!

-Clearly cats aren’t the only ones with unique behaviours Hannah! 😉

We’re taking part the PDSA’s “Big Weigh In” this February and March. A recent study showed that showed that 54% of owners don’t know their pet’s ideal weight, and 82% don’t know their pet’s body condition score. Many health conditions are caused by or exacerbated by obesity, so it is essential to keep your pet at a healthy weight.

We’re offering free nurse appointments to weigh your pet and discuss their diet, to help keep them in tip top condition.

Please phone reception on 01736 368768 to find out more

Today's talented team member is green-fingered Tamsyn!
🔸What’s your favourite animal?
Hmm, that’s a tough one! If I were allowed to have two favourites then I would have to say Rabbits and Owls. 🦉 🐇
Being the resident rabbit nurse, it seems only fitting for me to have a fondness for all things lagomorph! In many cultures, rabbits are a sign of prosperity and fertility. The rabbit is the fourth sign in the Chinese zodiac and is in fact the luckiest of all the signs!
I adore owls too, renowned in folklore for their wisdom and helpfulness. There are such a variety of species, from the smallest, the Elf Owl to the largest; the Blakiston Fishing Owl. I’ve been privileged enough to have worked with owls in the past and what may surprise you is the range of personalities they can have, from sweet and loving to fierce and feisty.
🔸 Most memorable case? I adore working with wildlife and exotics. Over the years, I have helped to x-ray an albino python, assist with a dental on a red panda, plus restrained a very angry 6 foot monitor lizard! Not long after I joined Regent Court, we had a beautiful tawny owl brought into us that had become stuck down a log burner flue. Fortunately, apart from being covered in soot, the owl was in good health and it was safely taken up to the Screech Owl Sanctuary to be rehabilitated back into the wild.
🔸 Favourite thing to do with a day off?
In my spare time, I am obsessed with all things horticultural! If I’m not watching Gardeners’ World, I’m reading gardening books or visiting as many gardens as I can. I also love to attend flower shows, this year I’ve chosen to head to the Oscars of the gardening world, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! If all that wasn’t enough, I’ve recently completed 2 gardening courses and have created , an Instagram page full of my green-fingered exploits! 🌺

🔸 This week our “Meet the team” is with Practice Manager Annabel:

🔸 Favourite animal? This is tricky! I would have to say one of the big cats (I just can’t choose!). From the solitary leopard to the social cheetah! They are all immensely clever and have adapted to live in the most amazing environments. Did you know that cheetahs are the only member of the cat family who are unable to fully retract their claws! This helps them with grip when running and aids in their hunting technique of sp*ed over stealth!

🔸 Most unusual case? During my nursing career, my most unusual case has to be helping to anaesthetise a Penguin! This is exceptionally difficult as they can hold their breath for anywhere between 3 and 6 minutes!!

🔸 Favourite thing to do on a day off? In my spare time I can be found either walking Pendle my Border Collie or at the sewing machine attempting to create something useful!

Thanks Annabel 😊

🔸 Next up for “Meet the team Monday” is vet nurse Trudy. Great fun to work with, Trudy always puts smiles on our faces!

🔸 Favourite animal? This to me has got to be a dog. I find them fascinating that in many ways we, as humans, can all relate to them in one way or another. Not only because of similarities in their personalities or nature but also by how they look. I myself feel I can certainly relate to the over excitable Labrador… Very friendly, occasionally over excitable and forever hungry! 🤣

🔸 Most rewarding case? I have been a veterinary nurse for many years now, and it’s safe to say there are no two days the same. I think this is why I enjoy the role, you never really know what is going to come through the door. One particular case that stands out for me, was helping on the anaesthesia team for an MOD (ministry of defence) German Shepherd who had fractured his canine tooth. This dog required a crown to repair his damaged tooth in order to continue working to protect the public. The dental was successful and the Shepherd was able to continue his work as before.

🔸 Favourite day off? We are very lucky to have a farm in our family and so most of our free time is spent causing chaos up there. My children love to get involved where they can. From climbing bales, collecting tadpoles out the cow troughs, chasing their cousins on their ride on tractors or helping their uncles feed the new calves. This is definitely our happy place. 🥰

Thanks Trudy!

🔸 We’re introducing a “Meet the team” post each Monday to help you know us a little better when you visit. First up is Emma the vet:

🔸Favourite animal? It has to be the elephant, I think they’re incredible! They’re brilliant at working together and looking after one another, they have amazing communication skills, help the environment but also know how to have plenty of fun! I think we should all be a bit more elephant! 🐘
🔸 Most rewarding case? There are plenty, but I treated a beautiful spaniel with an Immune-mediated anaemia, early on in my career. When I first saw him, his gums were really pale, he was so weak that he couldn’t lift his head but still always managed to wag his tail! After some intensive treatment, including a blood transfusion, he went on to make a full recovery and then his whole body would wag when he came back in to visit us. 🥰
🔸 Favourite day off? Walking in the woods with my spaniel Hazel, even better if a picnic’s involved!

04/12/2023

As well as life in practice, Veterinary Nurses regularly undertake Continual Professional Development (CPD), which is an element required by the RCVS to be on the nursing register.

As part of this, Tamsyn recently attended the 50th British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) Congress. For the last few years, Tamsyn has been the BVNA Regional Representative for Cornwall and has volunteered at this event by chairing lectures and speaking to attendees about the work of the BVNA.

Tamsyn has a particular interest in rabbits, wildlife care and mental health, and this year enjoyed attending lectures on Exotic Case Studies and how to care for the Gut Stasis Rabbit. It was also an excellent opportunity to network with other nurses, share knowledge and discover new products that could benefit patients in practice.
