These two young pups came in to see lovely nurse Becky last week for their final vaccination of the course. Indi and Remi are growing fast and will be back to see Becky again monthly so she can monitor their weight so they can keep up to date with flea and worm treatment. These monthly visits are such good practise whilst they are young as it gets puppies used to visiting the vets and a good excuse for us to have lots of puppy cuddles…….

☀️HOT WEATHER WARNING☀️

Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell.

Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal. Find out more about keeping your pet safe in hot weather here:

Are you looking to travel abroad with your pet this summer? ☀️🐶🐱

If you are, you will be required to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for them.

An AHC needs to be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).

Check with your veterinary practice to see if they have a qualified OV because not every practice will have one.

Since you cannot check your rabbit’s teeth at home,
it is important to look out for signs of dental disease!🦷🪥🐰
There are many things that you can look out for that
might indicate that your rabbit has some sort of
dental health issue.

If you notice any of these signs, it is important that
you bring your rabbit to your vet for an oral
assessment as soon as possible. Stopping eating
altogether is an emergency.

🐰⚠️FLYSTRIKE⚠️🐰

Flystrike happens more often in warm weather, and in
rabbits who have soiled fur (often due to poor diet, obesityor arthritis).

Throughout the spring and summer rabbits must be
checked twice daily and any soiled fur cleaned. If you findany sign of fly eggs or maggots you must arrange for yourrabbit to see a vet as soon as possible.

⚠️⚠️🐾🌞Hot weather advice 🌞🐾⚠️⚠️

✖️✖️We say this every year but PLEASE do not walk dogs in the heat - it can be fatal. ✖️✖️

⛔Don't forget about your pets and the potentially FATAL impact the heat has on them

⛔Walk your dogs in the morning and evening when it is cooler - don't over do it during these times either

⛔Be sensible in the sun

Signs of heat stroke include -

🌞Excessive Panting (first sign)
🌞Excessive thirst
🌞Increased heart rate
🌞Drooling (thick salivation)
🌞Bright red tongue
🌞Weakness and staggering around
🌞Aggitation and restlessness
🌞Collapse
🌞Seizuring
🌞Unconsciousness

If you suspect your pet has heat stroke please seek veterinary advice IMMEDIATELY.

You can cool pets with cool water
⛔NEVER USE ICE COLD WATER ⛔

Don't forget brachycephalic animals and overweight animals are at a HIGHER risk of heatstroke BUT if your dog is fit and healthy don't assume they are OK to be in the heat. Elderly dogs struggle in the heat too.

All dogs are at risk of overheating if in extreme heat.

Top tips for the heat wave -
✔️Provide plenty of water
✔️Can provide frozen snacks or ice cubes - these ARE safe! E.g frozen tuna ice cubes or frozen lickimats
✔️Provide plenty of shade
✔️Do not walk your dogs during the hottest times and when you walk them in the morning and evening DO NOT over do it
✔️NEVER leave your dog in the car even if it's just a minute
✔️Pavements can get too hot for your pets feet
✔️ Don't forget about small furries- provide shade , lots of water-you can place an frozen water bottle covered by a towel and they can choose to lie on it if they wish.

🌞Enjoy the heat but be sensible--if you think it's too hot then don't do it - it's far better to be cautious and safe 🌞

🐇This week is rabbit awareness week🐇

Look out for our posts offering advice for your rabbits! 🐰🩷

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits require vaccinations to keep them safe from infectious disease. Young rabbits are particularly vulnerable to serious illnesses, so it’s important to get them vaccinated early.

Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old and will need yearly booster vaccinations throughout their life to maintain immunity. 💉🐰

The month of May is officially National Smile Month, which we consider to be the perfect time to share joy and positivity and show off those pearly whites 😁

Keeping teeth in tip-top condition is not just important for humans, but for pets too, and that’s why our trained vets and nurses offer full dental checks at our practices 🦷🪥

We recommend pets have regular dental check ups to prevent diseases that can otherwise be difficult to detect at home 🐱🐶

To find out more information on the dental services we provide, please visit:: https://www.vetcollection.co.uk/our-services/dentistry/
