Purseweb is 20%. She was one of five kittens looking for their new home. Sadly because of her coat colour she will find it 20% harder to find a new home. All her siblings were 'desirable' colours and have found their new homes and Purseweb is left waiting. We want to beat the statistic that black and black&white cats take three times longer to rehome. If you think you could be Purseweb (or any of our other black cats) forever home please apply today!

Introducing Stink! 😽

Stink is a gorgeous 11 year old boy who is looking for a new home due to changes in family circumstances. He is a lovely, friendly boy looking for a quieter home, but he has been great with children visiting the home so would be okay with a quiet/calm/older family.

If he sounds like the cat for you please enquire about him here:
https://www.cats.org.uk/sthelens -30384

Stink is being homed as part of our Home to Home Scheme, please let us know if you would like to know more about adopting Stink, and read more about the Home to Home Scheme here: https://www.cats.org.uk/home-to-home/home-to-home-for-adopters

Flea’s can be really worrying for owners. All cats can get fleas so it’s important you treat for fleas regularly. We recommend only buying your flea treatments from your vet as the ingredients are more effective than the ones ‘off the shelf’ and your vet can advise on what is safe for your cat. The video of Bighorn is an example of what can happen if you do not flea your cats regularly with good quality products. He came into our care suffering from a bad flea allergy. We have treated this now and he is looking forward to finding his new home; although he may have to wait a while for all his fur to grow back!

You tend to find more fleas in the summer when its warm but their eggs can live in your home year round. Its important, if you find fleas on your cat, to treat your home as well as them and any other pets in your home. There are no age limits for fleas so make sure to treat kittens and older cats with appropriate treatments from your vet. Make sure to NEVER use a dog flea treatment on your cat as they contain ingredients that are harmful to cats.

Many cats do not like receiving flea treatment. You can try to create positive associations with flea treatments and there are some tips on training your cats to be more tolerant of the procedure on this web page: https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/health/fleas. You can also often make an appointment with your vet nurse and they can provide help and advice.

We get a lot of questions about harness training with your cats. So with our behaviour team we’ve come up with some do’s and don’ts of harness training your cats.

DO get your cat used to a harness from an early age
DO make sure to take your time getting your cat used to a harness
DON’T force a cat into a harness if they are showing signs of distress
DO understand it can be difficult to train a cat to be used to a harness and they may never accept it
DON’T only let your cat out on a harness. Cats are naturally free-roaming creatures who enjoy exploring their environment at their own pace
DO encourage positive associations with the harness such as using treats from their daily ration
DON’T expect your cat to toilet while on a harness as most cats don’t learn to
DO make sure the harness fits correctly as escaping a badly fitted harness can hurt your cat

MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure your cat is comfortable wearing the harness before you head outside and watch them carefully for signs of stress

Signs of stress include not moving while wearing the harness, trying to escape or run away from the harness, lip licking when there is no food around, hypervigilance when outside, trying to hide under and around objects, crouching low to the ground, tail low to the ground or flicking/swishing and wide dilated pupils.

REMEMBER we are removing all choice and control for the cat, naturally they may want to explore, run, or hide and this is hindered when wearing the harness. If you are looking for ways to provide more enrichment for your cat, we’d recommend regular, short, play sessions, puzzle feeding, or creating an enrichment box by collecting cat safe leaves and twigs from outside for your cat to explore and investigate inside. These may be better options than a potentially very stressful option of walking outside on a harness and lead.

This young boy is Rue. He is one of our longest stays and none of the staff here can understand why he hasn't found his forever home yet 🤷‍♀️
Rue is only 1 year old, and absolutely loves human company. He is definitely a very snuggly lap cat who would be great living with children.
If you are looking for a gentle young cat then Rue is the one for you. We have all our fingers and toes crossed for him 🤞
Click on the link below to send through an application form for Rue or give us a call on 01744 817718 anytime between 11 and 3
