Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Microchipping will be made a legal requirement from the 10th June 2024 🐾 😺
The government has announced that a cat must be implanted with a microchip before reaching 20 weeks of age.
If your cat is found not to be microchipped this could result in a fine unfortunately.

Microchipping is a simple, very quick procedure that can be done within a consult! Even better if your on the Medivet Healthcare Plan it's FREE!

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

Making sure your rabbit has the right diet will not only keep them healthy and full of the nutrients they need, but can also improve their dental health and regulate their digestive system.

Hay and grass should make up around 80% of your rabbit's diet, this can be fresh or dried grass, but they should have unlimited access to it. They can have a small amount of vegetables each day, around 15% of their diet. Rabbit-safe vegetables include broccoli, carrots, courgette and green beans.

This involves a request from an unknown number impersonating Medivet and asking for payment via a link. Usually a text, but possibly an email; there may be mention that your pet is injured or needing treatment.

Please ensure that you follow the standard precautions on avoiding scammers and always call the practice with any questions.

We come across miracle patients every now and again and it's safe to say that Bluebell is definitely one of those.

We have awarded Bluebell our braveheart award, let me tell you why....

Last week Bluebell was found struggling to breath by her Mum, straight away she was brought to us.
Whilst with us Blue unfortunately suffered cardiac arrest, we were able to resuscitate Bluebell and place a endotracheal tube into her airway allowing us to provide oxygen for her.
She was transferred to our hospital where she underwent further testing and was found to have a mass in her larynx.
Unfortunately Bluebell suffered a further cardiac arrest, she was successfully resuscitated again.
Bluebell then underwent a tracheostomy and further surgery to remove the mass in her larynx, at the point of surgery we were unsure whether or not Bluebell would make it through...
Being the miracle girl that Bluebell is, she made it through her surgery! She did amazingly well in her recovery and with support was able to go home the next day!
She really is a true miracle and a fighter!
Her fight deserves the recognition, just look at her 3 days post operatively!
Well done Bluebell - truley a Superstar! 🌟🩵

⚠️This is a warning to all dog walkers in Liverpool⚠️

It has been brought to our attention that several dogs have become seriously unwell after being walked in a park off Childwall Valley Road in Belle Vale. We understand that the area has been cordoned off by police.

If you have been walking in the area today and are concerned about your pet, please contact your vet.

As of 1st September 2023, the RCVS have changed the way in which we can prescribe certain groups of medications and, as of 12th January 2024, this guidance also affects the prescribing of antiparasitic treatments. Going forward, patients will require a clinical examination by a veterinary surgeon in order for us to be able to prescribe antiparasitic, antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial prescription medications.
We know a lot of our clients will get their pets antiparasitic treatment from ourselves and so we wanted to clarify the guidance and focus on how this will affect your pets parasite control regime, including flea and worming prevention.

❓What does this mean for me and my pet?
We will now need to undertake an 'Under Care' consultation with a Vet to be able to prescribe any of the above, including flea and worming treatment as all of the antiparasitic treatment we stock is prescription only.

❓What does an 'Under Care' consult involve?
This is an appointment for a Vet to give your pet a health check including listening to their lungs and heart to confirm they are healthy enough to be given a prescription.
If your pet is due for any health checks or vaccinations, we can combine this with the Under Care consult so you won't have to come back or pay the consultation fee.

❓Will I need to bring my pet in every time they are due their flea and worming treatment?

The good news is no! If the vet is happy to, they can authorise for your pet to have their flea and worming treatment dispensed for 12 months from the date their Under Care health check is carried out and you will be able to call or e-mail us to order your 3 monthly supply of medication to collect 48 hours later as usual. Legally, we will need to carry out the Under Care check every 12 months for the prescription of antiparasitic medication.

❗Please note, this is only applicable to antiparasitic medications - for other medication groups your pet will need a full consultation for medication to be dispensed.

Week 1 - Get to know each other, socialisation & Health matters (flea and worming control, grooming, vaccinations). Week 2 - Socialisation, dietary & exercise requirements, dental care and handling your puppy. Week 3 - Socialisation, toilet training help, chewing behaviours, mental stimulation and the right toys for your pup. Week 4 - Socialisation, basic commands, Q&A session, pups recieve certificate and badge ☺️ Total of 4 pups on a course - ring up to book your place!
