Operating in sectors such as private housing, social housing, commercial, industrial, health, educational, and ecclesiastical, Wood Goldstraw Yorath is a multi-disciplinary Practice whose core diciplines are Architecture, Quantity Surveying/construction cost management, CDM Consultancy/Principal Designers & Project Managers. We operate on a digital, paper-light basis utilising BIM (Building Information Modelling) across all of our projects to facilitate a fully inclusive process culminating in successful, cost effective, high-quality solutions.

Role Description

This is a full-time role and central to our in-house Architectural discipline, predominantly undertaking feasibility and scheme designwork (i.e. RIBA work stages 0-3 incl) but also providing guidance and general liaison once projects are passed on to our various technical design teams to ensure a cohesive and seamless design evolution and delivery (i.e. through RIBA work stages 4-7 incl) . Additionally, experienced Architects with conservation experience and appropriate accreditation are also welcome to apply and would, in addition to the above role, also head up and be given the remit and support to expand the Practice's Heritage & Conservation section. This is a hybrid role, with the majority of work being undertaken in our offices in Stoke-On-Trent, but also allowing for flexibility to work remotely. Currently, our workload is generally of a regional nature, although we work nationally. Accordingly, all applicants must hold a full, clean drivers licence and have their own vehicle.

Qualifications/Experience

Must be ARB registered.
Strong contemporary design skills and the ability to 'think outside the box'
Design philosophy must demonstrate sustainability and energy efficiency as core values
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Comfortable and able to work as part of a team as well as in isolation
Proficient knowledge of prevailing planning legislation
Awareness of general build costs and ability to design within given budget cost limits
Must have excellent communication and negotiation skills
Fluent in the use of BIM (We use ArchiCAD throughout- training will be given where necessary)
Must be proficient in use of general software tools ( Word, Outlook, Excel, NBS, etc)
Must be prepared to assist in mentoring younger and less experienced professionals in the Practice.
Membership of the RIBA would be an advantage but is not essential.
A relevant conservation accreditation (e.g., AABC or similar) would also be an advantage but is not essential.
Must be able to demonstrate minimum 10 years post-qualification experience in similar work environments.

Salary

The salary range will commence at @£40k although the successful applicant will be rewarded with a salary/reimbursement package commensurate with their specific qualifications and experience.

Works on site are progressing well. This Grade II listed former school house fell into disrepair and needed rescuing. It is to be partially converted into a number of unique apartments and a Community Centre. The economic viability of the refurbishment and conversion project hinged on an element of new-build which of course had to be designed to respect the Listed setting.

A huge congratulations to Laura Webb and sister, Charlotte for absolutely smashing the 34 mile/55km Sandstone Trail in support of Alzheimer's Research UK! A great charity working for a cure to all forms of dementia.

They completed the 34 mile/55km walk in under 12 hours, enduring heavy rain along the way. What a fantastic achievement in support of others!

Laura Webb and sister, Charlotte had a very early start today to complete the 34 mile/55km Sandstone Trail in support of Alzheimer's Research UK! A great charity working for a cure to all forms of dementia.

They reached the halfway point at 1:15 today and are absolutely smashing it.

A major office refurbishment & façade redesign project is well underway.

Wood Goldstraw Yorath are working with a fantastic client team with a shared vision for a sustainable solution to repurpose an existing building.

On completion the project will provide modern energy efficient office space with views over the canal at the rear.

Project Complete: We have recently handed over a modest but complex extensions and alterations project in Cheshire. The dwelling had already been significantly extended, and presented us with some challenges / surprises along the way, but the result is a well balanced, bright and functional addition.

This year, as the practice turns 150, one of our Directors celebrates a personal milestone. This week, Rob Leadbeater has celebrated his 50th birthday!
His colleagues couldn’t let this milestone go under the radar as Rob had hoped, so we decorated his office in a fashion that he won’t be forgetting for some time.

Not only is it good news for the environment, but it is always deeply satisfying to 'breath new life' into old buildings which are seemingly unusable.......Our clients have now moved into and are operating their business from their new headquarters building! We are pleased to anounce that our project to convert the former Deaf Institute (The Ellis Centre), and adjacent Chest Clinic (Wellesley House) in Wellesley Street, Shelton, to create a new Independent SEN School for 'Edison Young People', was completed and handed over prior to the Chritsmas break.

The new Edison Pace School makes excellent use of the segregation the two adjacent, formerly under-used buildings provide by locating the usual academic classroom accomodation in one building and the more specialist vocational activities in the other. The latter includes dedicated science labs, hairdressing and beauty facilities, construction trade workshops, an art and pottery studio, etc. as well as a floodlit MUGA to the rear. The students have visited site during construction and have actively seen their new school evolve; the first cohort of students are expected to attend the facility straight after the Christmas break.

The pandemic had a lot to answer for…. It’s not every day you get asked as an Architect to design a piece of furniture to discourage mingling…. We can only hope it was a once in a lifetime commission, but having said that, happy to hear they are still being put to good use. I guess we can all need some alone time every now and then.
