New Guisborough Practice coming soon...

We are delighted to announce that we will be opening a new community practice in Guisborough. Over the last few months, we have been busy transforming a unit on South Buck Way, Cleveland Gate Retail Park, just off Rectory Lane, into a modern veterinary practice and we are expecting to open in early summer.

Over the last 31 years Clevedale has provided veterinary care for the communities in Upleatham, Stokesley and Whitby. With huge demand for the quality veterinary care in the area we are excited to bring a new community practice into the heart of Guisborough.

We are now taking pre-registrations for new clients. Existing clients are
welcome to use our new practice and do not need to re-register.

Please follow this link to pre-register with the new Guisborough Practice. www.clevedalevetssmallanimal.co.uk/contact-us/registration/

Plans have been unveiled by Cleveland Vets for a new branch on South Buck Way at Cleveland Gate Retail Park, in Guisborough

🐾 LUIGI 🐾

Luigi is a little Italian Greyhound who unfortunately broke his front leg and came to see our orthopaedic surgeon Derek 🩻👨🏻‍⚕️

▪️The fracture was a transverse displaced fracture of both the radius and ulna .
▪️Sadly, in this breed it is quite a notorious fracture and there is a high incidence of problems associated with repair.
▪️Due to the risk of non union the fracture was repaired with a dynamic compression plate applied to the radius.
▪️Another issue with these breeds is that they often have wound breakdown over the plate because their skin is so incredibly thin.
▪️Fortunately, Luigi and his owners have followed our post op advice to the letter and 4 weeks post-op he is fully weight bearing and doing very well with good evidence of boney union of both the radius and ulna.
▪️The next big thing is when /if we remove the plate but that's a decision for the future.

We wish Luigi all the best in his recovery ❤️‍🩹

The purple poppy pays tribute to animals lost in service, and to those who serve us today 💜
Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were often drafted into the war effort, and purple poppies can be worn to remember the service of these animals and the lives that were lost.

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

Guinea pigs are sociable animals and need to live with friends.

🐰Although rabbits and guinea pigs are often kept together, this is not ideal as they have different nutritional requirements and communicate in different ways.

The best pairing is single-sex pairs or small groups of neutered guinea pigs ❤️

👍Ensure that they are moving around normally
👍Note any changes in their behaviour

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

🥕Guinea pigs are vegetarians and need high levels of fibre in their diet to keep their digestive system working correctly. Like rabbits, they produce soft droppings which they then eat in order to absorb more nutrients!

🥦Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs can’t produce or store Vitamin C properly, so their diet needs to be supplemented with foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C, such as fresh vegetables.

🍡Nuggets should be fed instead of muesli, otherwise, they will just pick out the pieces of food that they like best! Alongside nuggets, you should feed hay, grass, and fresh veggies. Grass-based snacks can also be fed as treats occasionally and clean, fresh water should always be provided.

5 things to include in a complete diet:
1. Hay/grass
2. Nuggets
3. Healthy snacks
4. Fresh veggies
5. Water

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

Giving your piggies the best place to live just takes a few simple steps but is vital to ensure that they are kept happy and healthy.

The ideal environment for you guinea pig should be:
☺️Draught-free
☺️Predator-proof
☺️At least 5ft x 2ft of indoor space with a much larger run attached to it
☺️Out of direct sunlight to prevent heatstroke
☺️Away from any electrical cables
☺️Kept between 17℃ and 20℃

It should also have:
☺️Lots of hiding places
☺️Deep piles of hay for nesting and tunneling
☺️Separate toilet areas from the sleeping area
☺️Non-slip flooring

To ensure that your guinea pig’s home is kept in good order, check and clean the area regularly, here is a checklist that you can use:

✅Clean out toilet area
✅Remove soiled bedding
✅Wash food and water containers
✅Replace fresh hay and water
✅Remove any old uneaten food

Weekly tasks
✅Remove and replace all bedding
✅Place a small amount of old bedding back into the area for a familiar smell for your piggies

Monthly tasks
✅Remove everything and clean thoroughly
✅Clean the housing with animal safe cleaner
✅Replace bedding

Follow to find out more about how you can ensure your guinea pigs' environment meets their needs!

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness week🐹

Guinea pigs communicate using several noises, including the well-known ‘wheek-wheek’ call – a sign of excitement or to find a friend – and a low ‘purring’ sound, which they make when they are feeling content and chilled out. They also make a series of short ‘putt-putt’ noises when they are exploring.

Here are some top tips for keeping your guinea pigs happy:

🌟Give them lots of toys to play with

🌟Hide food around their enclosure to encourage foraging behaviour

🌟Provide hiding places for them to go when they are scared

🌟Ensure they have constant access to food, water and friends

⚠️Watch out for grass awns!⚠️

🌱It's definitely grass awn season around here, we have seen them cause problems in our pets every day over the past few weeks. We have seen them getting stuck in the eyes, ears, nose, paws and skin!

🐶Grass awns tend to cause more problems in hairy dogs like spaniels, and Theo is a prime example, he managed to get 6 awns in his ears at once. After a light sedation, all of the awns were removed and he felt a lot more comfortable!

👀You can prevent them from causing a problem in your pet by:
- checking the ears, eyes and coat after each walk
- trimming the hair between the toes
- keeping the coat short
Doing this helps to prevent the awns from going unnoticed in the hair and then working their way into the skin.

🐾Signs of grass awns include:
- shaking the head
- licking the paws
- swelling or wounds between the toes

📞If you notice any of these signs, please call us on 01642 711298

How do I know if my rabbit is happy?

Happy rabbits often do binkies, as can be seen in the video below 👇

To make your rabbit happy, they need to have:
🏡 enough space to move around properly
🐰🐰friends
🥕 fresh food
🐶 safety from other animals
⚽️ toys to play with
🪵 things to chew

Playing games with your rabbit is a great way to keep them entertained, as well as ensuring that they are exercising. You can even train them to play fetch or jump over obstacles!

A stressed rabbit may stop eating, hide a lot, bite, thump at the ground or grind their teeth, if you notice any of these signs, please ask us for advice by calling us on: 01642 711298

Prevention is better than cure!

🌟If you provide your rabbit with a balanced diet and a clean environment, and check them daily then you should prevent a lot of health problems.

💉However, they should also be neutered and vaccinated to prevent fatal diseases such as uterine cancer, uterine infections, rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease, and myxomatosis.

During your daily rabbit checks, you should be looking at the following:
👀 discharge from the eyes and nose
💩 amount and type of faeces produced
💧how much food and water has been consumed
🧼how clean their bum is

If you have any concerns, please call us to make an appointment on: 01642 711298

🏡 It may be tempting to get just one rabbit, however, rabbits should live with others.

🐰 Even if you spend a lot of time with your rabbit, they still need someone like them to play with, talk to, and groom.

🥰 Having a bonded companion has been shown to make rabbits happier, calmer, and less stressed.

🐹 Although keeping rabbits with guinea pigs may seem like a good idea, they actually have different dietary requirements and they communicate in different ways, so the best pairing is a neutered male with a neutered female.

Although muesli may look like a balanced diet for a rabbit, it shouldn't be used because:
- rabbits learn to pick out the pieces of food that they prefer
- it is often high in calories, contributing to rabbits becoming overweight
- it is often low in fibre, resulting in teeth and gut problems
To add variety to your rabbit's diet, instead add spinach, kale, watercress, parsley, mint, celery, or carrot tops.
We would love to see pictures of your rabbit's varied diet, please post below 🙂
