Is your dog digging holes all over your garden? Give them a designated digging pit.
Are they tearing up your post? Let them rip up your recycling.
Chasing squirrels? Play more chase games with them!

If there's tension on the lead, if your dog is pulling away from you, or if their focus is elsewhere when you unclip the lead, then you're setting off on the wrong foot for good off-lead engagement and recall.
Here's how I taught this to Jet:
• get a handful of high-value treats, make sure you have your dog's attention. (If you can't get their attention, try again in a less distracting environment.)
• unclip the lead, feed a couple of treats
• clip the lead back on
• unclip the lead, feed a couple of treats
• clip the lead back on
• repeat, repeat, repeat... after a while I expect your dog will automatically look to you when you take the lead off, because they're expecting those tasty rewards!
• if you're in a place where it is safe to let your dog off-lead, after your last rep, give your release cue (such as "okay", "free" or "break"), chuck a couple of treats onto the floor for them to sniff out, and start walking with them
Later on, you can fade out the treats and just use the environment as the reward, as I have done here with Jet, but really don't rush to this! There is no harm in using treats if your dog loves them 😊

Now IF you are interested in doing something like competitive obedience with your older dog, then you will want to teach them a recall to sit. BUT you need to teach both behaviours separately first.
Reward your recall BEFORE you ask for a sit. And/or don't ask for a sit at all. Sit is overrated 😉

For our graduation party in week 6, all the owners are invited to teach their puppy a little trick. Meeka did some fantastic weaving! Going in between someone's legs can be scary for some puppies, and Meeka can be a little under confident, so this is absolutely brilliant from her. I'm so impressed at how she managed to focus on her lovely mum and not be worried about the other puppies 🥰

I have made plenty of mistakes with Jet but I am very grateful that this wasn't one of them. Blasting him with Pet Corrector would have terrified him, and put our relationship in the gutter.
The relationship you have with your dog is everything. Your dog trusting you is everything. You being your dog's safe place is everything.
