Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) is extremely poisonous to cats and dogs, and due to its sweet smell and taste can be quite tempting for them to drink.

Symptoms can appear as quickly as 30 minutes after ingestion but can take up to 12 hours.

Symptoms include:
Vomiting
Excessive thirst and urination
Depression
Staggering/unsteadiness
Seizures

It is important to clean up any spillages immediately and if you think your pet may have come into contact with antifreeze please contact us as soon as
possible on 01905 724445.

⛄️❄️ We hope everyone is staying warm in the snow. As the weather is getting much colder the roads and paths will be treated with rock salt.

This can cause irritation to your pets paws and if they lick it off can cause an upset stomach and in severe cases liver damage or seizures.

We advise washing your dogs feet after a walk and monitor paws for any signs of irritation.

It’s the time of year where there are often fireworks set off in the community.
Many animals are frightened of fireworks and it can be hard for owners to see our pets so terrified but there are somethings that you can do to help.

Keep them indoors to reduce their exposure to the noise.
Create a safe space for them to hide away if they want to.
Play calming music to help drown out the noise.

There are also some medications that we can prescribe to help with your pets fear. If you think these might benefit your pet please get in contact with us on 01905 724445.

Halloween can be a scary time for our pets with lots of unexpected knocks on the door and people dressed up in costumes. But there are plenty of actions you can take to try to make your pets feel as relaxed as possible.

Adapt your normal routine, take dogs out for walks earlier to avoid the costumes and fireworks.

Make sure you keep any human treats out of your pets reach.

Make sure your dog does not have access to the front door if your are opening it frequently for trick or treaters. You don’t want them to be spooked and to escape.

Not all animals enjoy dressing up, if you think your pets might not like a costume try to keep it to people only.

As the weather changes you may find that your cats are not going outside as much as they were.
Ensure they have lots of toys to play with to stop them getting bored.
You may need to get more litter trays if your cat would usually toilet outside but is reluctant to do so in the cold and wet.
It may also be necessary, to avoid weight gain, to reduce the number of treats your cat is getting.

With autumn here and the mornings and evenings getting darker it can be more difficult for your dog and yourself to be seen.
Ensure you are wearing reflective clothing when out walking in the dark. You can also get reflective or flashing collars for your pets to make sure they can be seen too.

Joint supplements such as Nutraquin+ contain natural ingredients to help support healthy joints.

They can aid mobility and flexibility by supporting the natural systems that control inflammation, and can be given along side prescription medications such as NSAIDs.

They are available for both dogs and cats and can be given without a prescription from a vet.

If you think your pet may benefit from a joint supplement please pop in to see us or call us on 01905 724445

Another treatment for osteoarthritis is a medication that binds to the nerve growth factor (NGF). NFG is a protein that is involved in join pain signalling and inflammation. The medication then prevents NFG from attaching to the pain receptors and therefore reducing joint pain.

This medication is given monthly by injection and is called Solensia for cats and Librela for dogs.

If you think this may benefit your pet, please call the practice on 01905 724445 to book an appointment.
