Dogs Trust Ireland

Today sees the launch of our Campaign. The campaign focuses on some of our long-term adorable residents who, through no fault of their own, just can’t seem to find a home. All the staff at Dogs Trust truly love and care for every dog at the centre but would love for them to go to their forever home. The team are desperately trying to find homes for these beautiful characters and know that there is a special someone waiting out there for each and every one of them! Dogs Trust - Dogs Trust horrified at proposed Tail Docking and Dew Claw Removal laws

Dogs Trust has had sight of draft Regulations to the otherwise excellent Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, which permits tail docking of young pups and their dew claw removal without the use of anaesthetic or pain-relief by non-veterinary qualified persons.

DSPCA

The DSPCA are asking all pet owners to be particularly careful with their pets today. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and shade. Avoid long car journeys and do not leave your dog in the car even for a short time as the temperatures will get very hot.

Pets can easily over heat so if necessary move rabbits hutches into the shade and keep water bottles filled.

Avoid walking your dogs in the heat of the day and avoid tarmac paths as they can get extremely hot and can burn the pads of the feet – if its too hot for you to walk on in bare feet it’s too hot for your dog!

If there are horses in fields near you check to see if they have water (it could be a stream or a water feeder). If you think they don’t have access to water arrange to have a bucket brought to them in and contact us at [email protected] with the location. This will help them until we can arrange to get to the site.

Remember Ollie the sniffer dog who sniffed out €300k worth of drugs in Shannon Airport on Tuesday? http://brne.ws/agc

Well his friend Barney, pictured, has lead customs officers to €20,000 of cash at Dublin Airport.

Worth a few extra doggy biscuits, we think.

DSPCA launches Great Irish Dog Walk

The DSPCA today announced details of a major new fund raising initiative the “DSPCA Great Irish Dog Walk”. The fundraiser will see the largest number of dogs ever gathered together in one location in Ireland. 5,000 dogs and their human families will “Stand up and Walk” in the Phoenix Park on 28th September 2013 to take part in the 3k walk.

The DSPCA Great Irish Dog Walk is being organised as a family event to raise much needed funds for the charity which is Ireland’s largest and longest established animal welfare organisation. The DSPCA estimate there are currently over 5,000 animals neglected, starving or homeless at any one time in Dublin city alone. Funds raised from this event will help the DSPCA to assist these animals, who have no voice of their own.

Commenting Brian Gillen, DSPCA CEO, said “This is the first time a dog walking event of this scale will take place in Ireland. It has a dual purpose to raise funds to assist the DSPCA carry out its rescue and animal welfare services as well as highlighting and encouraging responsible pet ownership. The public have and continue to play a very important role in the work of the DSPCA whether it is through fund raising or raising the alarm by reporting animal neglect and cruelty cases”.

The DSPCA is also hoping to attract a number of event sponsors and is pleased to announce that it is receiving support from Dubarry of Ireland. Commenting Michael Walsh, Marketing Director of Dubarry said, “We are proud to support this year’s Great Irish Dog Walk. Given Dubarry of Ireland’s proud outdoor and leisure affinity, we are very happy to support the work carried out by the DSPCA. Their work helps animals across Dublin to find a home and be treated with care. With over 5,000 dogs and 12,500 people set to take part in the walk this year, it is an event that the whole family can get involved in”.

Dog owners who wish to take part in the DSPCA Great Irish Dog Walk on Saturday 28th September 2013 at the Phoenix Park can register on line at www.dspca.ie or by downloading an application form and posting it to the Great Irish Dog Walk, DSPCA, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16. DSPCA Welcomes Passing of Animal Welfare Bill

Wednesday 22 May 2013: The DSPCA, Ireland's largest and longest established animal welfare organisation, today welcomed the passing of the Animal Health & Welfare Bill into law. The legislation will replace the outdated Protection of Animals Act 1911 and will see the introduction of compulsory microchipping of dogs effective from 2016 onwards.

According to the DSPCA the new animal welfare legislation will improve the rights of animals, will make animal owners more accountable, will increase the powers of seizure of animals in neglected situations, allow for prevention of cruelty in numerous situations and increase the penalties for convictions. In particular it will provide for the appointment of authorised officers directly by the Minister for Agriculture and those officers will be legally empowered.

Commenting Brian Gillen, CEO, DSPCA, said “The introduction of modern Animal Welfare legislation will reduce the unnecessary suffering on animals as authorities now have the backing of appropriate legislation. This is particularly important with regard to trafficking of animals which remains a significant issue in Ireland. In those cases, where trafficking is suspected, we will now be able to trace the source of those engaged in this cruel trade and prosecutions will be possible”.

On an average day the DSPCA receives over 400 calls to its emergency and cruelty line which is up by 150 a day on 2012. So far this year the DSPCA has seen an increase in the numbers of calls it receives each day with calls concerning animal cruelty increasing by 60%.

Established in 1840 to prevent cruelty to animals, the DSPCA is Ireland's largest and longest established animal welfare organisation. Its primary role is the prevention of cruelty and neglect through the provision of homing, rescue and care services for injured and sick animals. The DSPCA is a leading advocate for animal welfare and works closely with the Gardai and the Fire Rescue services.

"Why does my dog itch after grooming?"

Some dogs itch as people would after they have shaved their legs or “other” areas. Another reason is the dog came into the studio severely pelted (matted to the skin solid) and the groomer had to use a very short blade to get under that matting to be able to lift it away from the skin. Owners are responsible for the regular in home brushing of their pets to maintain their coats so a dog groomer can do a cute clip. Sometimes puppies itch because it is their first grooming, or they have never had certain procedures done on them such as ear hair removal in the ca**l. Your pup will shake its head. Discourage your dog from scratching or shaking its head, as he or she will cause irritation and scabbing if left unattended.

Before going to Groomers, do NOT feed your dog and take your dog for a walk prior to leaving home. It is very normal for your dog to shake when coming into a dog salon, they are smart and know what is coming, and love to put on a "show" for their owners, but once inside they know the drill, and are quite content with us once the owner leaves. You are best to just "hand off" your dog and NOT to make a big deal about leaving your dog. Your dog will pick up on your anxiety and it will be harder on him or her.

19/02/2013

"When should my puppy have its first professional grooming?"

Grooming on your pup should start at 10 weeks of age (after second vaccination), to let the pup become acquainted with the sounds of the studio environment, noises such as dryers, blasters, and other dogs etc. Your groomer will teach you the proper way to brush and handle your puppy. These techniques started early will imprint on your pup. The first 6 months of life for a dog is like the first 5 years for a human. It is very important to start them early. We recommend a grooming session every month for the first 4 months. With both you and your groomer working hand in hand doing the same things at home as the groomer would in the studio the pup will take everything around him or her in stride and make it a pleasant experience and not a traumatic one, this in turn makes grooming your pet at home easy for your pup, you and the groomer. Once your dog is conditioned for grooming, regular grooming is required every 2 months for life.
