We would like to say a huge big thank you to socks and his owners this week! Socks is an absolute hero! ๐Ÿ‘โค

Socks is one of the newest members on our blood donor panel. This was his first blood donation and he was such a good boy! ๐Ÿ•

His blood donation was put towards saving a gorgeous little dog that was in bother after eating some rat poison! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ This little dog was in dire need of a blood transfusion ASAP, and socks owners were so good to bring him to us straight away so that he could help. What absolute heroes! โค

Thankfully the blood transfusion was successful, and the receiver was bright enough to be transferred back to their own vets the following morning ๐Ÿ˜Œ

โ—If you are interested in adding your pet to our blood donor panel or you want to now more about the criteria for blood donors you can send an email to [email protected]

โญSome great advice from our sister practice up north!

โ—Be mindful of your pets during the current heatwave! Pets are at a huge risk of heatstroke with the current hot weather!

Just think guys if it's too hot for you to walk in your bare feet, then it is way to warm for your pet to be out on a walk!๐Ÿฅต

And remember our great team at MiNight Vet Kildare are at hand this weekend should your pet be showing any signs of heatstroke. You can reach the team on (045) 530 556 ๐Ÿ“ž

๐ŸŒžHot Weatherโ˜€๏ธ

With the beautiful weather we're having this weekend comes a few of our Top Tips for keeping your fluffballs safe during the warmer months:

โ˜€๏ธWalkies: dogs love walkies, and it is very good for their mental and emotional health to get out regularly! Walk your dogs in the early morning and evening when the temperature is cooler. The sun is strongest at midday, and can be overwhelming. The concrete can be too hot to walk on at this time of day too! If you wouldn't take a barefoot walk in a fur coat, it's probably too warm for the pooch!

โ˜€๏ธWater: leave out plenty of water during a hot day for your dog. Ensure they always have access. Check bowls and top up regularly.

โ˜€๏ธShade: make sure your doggy always has access to cool and shady places. Don't leave them in greenhouses, sunny conservatories or out in the garden if there is no access to shade. Ensure there is always some air circulation.

โ˜€๏ธCars: never ever leave your dog unattended in a car! Not even for 5 minutes, not even if you have a window open. Cars heat up very very quickly in the sun and what seems like a short time can unfortunately be too long for our pets. Avoid longer car journeys wherever possible in the heat of the day also.

โ˜€๏ธ TREATS ๐Ÿ‘€ our pets love treats, especially in summer! Give them something suitable, frozen carrots, one of their toys from the freezer, even ice cubes! Don't feed your dogs human treats like ice-cream as this can give them upset tummies.

โ˜€๏ธVets: We are here for you 24/7. If you are worried about your pet or think they may be overheating, call us straight away for advice! Look out for signs like: panting, lethargy, collapse, very red gums, or hot to the touch. The sooner we can help you, the better the outcome for your little one ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ‘ Well done guys! Some great guesses!

The answer is... an eraser! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

โ—It is very common for dogs and cats to eat things they arenโ€™t supposed to. Sometimes there are no consequences to a dietary indiscretion, but sometimes there are.

โ—Depending on what particular thing has been ingested, we can see symptoms ranging from vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal tenderness or pain, decreased appetite, straining to defecate or producing small amounts of f***s, lethargy, changes in behavior such as biting

โ—The gastrointestinal tract of the dog and cat is made up of the stomach, the small intestine and the large intestine. Ingested items may become stuck at any point, but the most common location for an obstruction is the small intestine.

โ—After obtaining a thorough medical history, your veterinarian will perform a careful physical examination. If a foreign body is suspected, abdominal X-rays will be performed.

โ—If a foreign body obstruction is diagnosed or suspected, exploratory surgery is generally recommended.

โ—In some instances, the foreign body may be able to pass on its own. In this event, your veterinarian may recommend hospitalization of your dog for close observation, and will perform follow-up radiographs to track the progress of the foreign object.

โ—If you have any suspicion that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn't have you can contact the minight vet team in kildare on (045) 530 556 ๐Ÿ“ž

โ—Remember guys prompt treatment always contributes to a better prognosis!

Would anybody, hazard a guess as to what's going on in this xray? ๐Ÿค”We'll be uploading the answer tomorrow afternoon! โ“

Amazing advice and really informative post from one of our sister practices in Northern Ireland! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

๐Ÿถ All about PYOMETRA ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Vet Amy can be seen here operating on a pyometra infection in one of our patients. But what does that mean? ๐Ÿค”

Pyometra is a condition that affects female non-neutered dogs ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฉ It typically occurs 1-3 months after their season. A bacterial infection takes hold in the uterus and rapidly distends the womb as if the dog was pregnant ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Left untreated, the uterus can rupture, causing the dog to go septic and pass away from systemic infection ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

So what are some signs that your dog may be having a pyo?
๐Ÿถ Last in heat 1-3 months ago
๐Ÿถ Lethargic and off form
๐Ÿถ Off food and drinking more than usual
๐Ÿถ Vomiting
๐Ÿถ Swollen abdomen
๐Ÿถ Smelly mucky discharge from her v***a

So what can we do about it?

Most dogs will need lots of IV fluids and to go to surgery straight away. In some cases, your dog may be a suitable case for medical management until the infection is under control and can then go to surgery a few weeks later ๐Ÿ’Š

In all cases, having the uterus removed (spay) is recommended as the infection will return during her next season if left un-neutered. โœ…

If you have any suspicion that your dog may be suffering from this condition, contact us IMMEDIATELY as pyometra can quickly become a fatal condition if left untreated ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

My pet needs to stay in the vets on a "drip"? But what does this mean? ๐Ÿค”

Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy is commonly used in veterinary practice and allows practitioners to restore circulating blood volume, correct dehydration, provide electrolytes and to administer IV medications.

Intravenous fluid therapy may be used for a variety of reasons, including treatment of shock, rehydration, providing electrolytes and glucose, for the treatment of intoxications, and for supportive care in cases such as liver or even kidney disease.

But how is the treatment administered? ๐Ÿค”

When your pet is admitted to the clinic a small patch is shaved on their leg which allows access to the vein that runs down their leg. The area is then prepared using a sterile scrub. An intravenous cannula is then placed, by either your vet or your vet nurse, into the vein. The cannula is then secured in place using various different bandage materials. Once this is done a fluid bag can be attached to the cannula using an administration set. Fluid calculations are then done by your vet to make sure your pet receives just the right amount of fluids to get them on the road to recovery.

The gorgeous lily stayed with us for a couple nights during the week to receive fluids over night following her surgical procedure. She was a great patient and even allowed us to snap a quick pic of her modeling her iv and fluid set ๐Ÿ•โค

๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŒŸ Star patient alert!! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿšจ

Jess was brought into us in late March after she had been missing for a couple days. After completing a full clinical exam and a full set of xrays, she was diagnosed with a broken pelvis ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Our team of vets and vet nurses worked hard to make sure that she was comfortable, had enough pain relief on board and made sure that her owners were well advised on how to aid her recovery.

We are happy to report that after loads of love, tlc, pain relief and strict cage rest for the last 6 weeks to allow the pelvis to heal she is feeling much much better and has made a full recovery๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ˜„

She is now enjoying the luxury of indoor living and she's enjoying every bit of it! ๐Ÿ˜ป Thanks to her lovely owner for giving us an update on her recovery! As an emergency care team we don't always get to know how are patients are getting on once they have been discharged back to their usual vets, so we are always so grateful for the feedback โค

Remember guys if your pet needs veterinary attention outside of your usual vets working hours we are always happy to help. You can contact the team on (045) 530 556 ๐Ÿ“ž They are always happy to help ๐Ÿ˜

One of the jobs are great vet nurses do us bandaging! ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿฉน

Depending on the type of wound and its location RVNs are trained to create and apply the most appropriate dressing and bandage. Your pet may need to have a bandage applied to wounds to keep them clean and protected so that they have the best chance at healing.

At each bandage change your vet nurse will assess the wound, monitor wound healing and replace protective dressings and bandages as required. Some wounds are not straightforward and may even take weeks or even months to heal! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Your RVN has a vast knowledge of different topical gels and wound dressings that can be applied at different stages of wound healing to help that wound along its way to healing.

Often we see wounds on paws, tails and ears which can be tricky places to apply a bandage. While these places can be tricky, your RVN is well versed in selecting the right bandage and technique to suit each wound. ๐Ÿ‘ From time to time we even see pets with broken legs or fractures that need to be stabilised. For this your RVN has been trained in specialist bandaging techniques to help support and stabilise bones until the fracture can be surgically repaired and to help support the bones while they heal.

Most RVNs even undertake further education to provide them with an even more advanced knowledge of wound healing and management ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ

Veterinary Nursing Awareness month is a yearly celebration in recognition of the
skills and value registered veterinary nurses bring to animal health and welfare.

Under their job title as regulated professionals, registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) work closely with our veterinary surgeons to ensure that your pets are cared for in the best possible way๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

Being a veterinary nurse is challenging but it's also an incredibly rewarding career. On any given day our RVNs may find themselves collecting and testing lab samples, monitoring anaesthetics, taking xrays, medicating patients in the hospital wards, dressing wounds and even providing minor surgical procedures such as stitching wounds. We hope that some of the posts over the month give you an insight as to what our veterinary nurses do behind the scenes, and highlight just how fabulous and diverse our veterinary nurses are here at MiNight Vet Kildare โค
