Could this be a place to put these amazing tools in horses that are already chipped, when faced with disease outbreaks such as the current EHV-1 outbreaks?

In recent weeks we have seen an increase in tapeworm related illnesses in our patients. Regular testing and treatment can help prevent issues. Below we have explained more about tapeworm-

What exactly are Tapeworms?

There are three species of tapeworm that can affect horses- Anoplocephala perfoliata, Anoplocephala magna and Anoplocephala mamillana. Anoplocephala perfoliata is by far the most common type of tapeworm to affect horses in the UK. These worms don’t look how you would expect them to- they are cream in colour and made up of egg containing segments. They can reach up to 20cm in length.
These little trouble makers suction to the horse’s gut wall in the small intestine as well as at the ileocaecal junction (where the small and large intestines meet). They survive here by eating the food the horse has ingested. This can lead to weight loss, diarrhoea and different types of colic including impactions, intussusception and occasionally fatal gut rupture.

How did my horse get Tapeworm?

Tapeworm relies on what is called an intermediate host in order to spread. The name of this host is the tiny Oribatid mite which lives in grassland and in forage like hay and straw. The horse ingests tapeworm while grazing or eating forage. The tapeworm eggs take months to mature into adult worms inside the horse once ingested.

How can I prevent Tapeworm related issues?

Traditionally horses have been wormed for tapeworm in Spring and Autumn. Due to resistance problems we now do not recommend preventative treatment but recommend regular testing instead.
Occasionally tapeworm eggs can be spotted on a routine faecal worm egg count however this is not a reliable test to identify tapeworm. Saliva Tapeworm tests (Equisal tests) are simple to use and accurate. They involve using a special swab to collect the horse’s saliva, which the owner can do themselves at home without the need for a vet visit. Using Equisal tests in combination with faecal worm egg counts are useful and allow us to advise you on the best treatment strategy.
We recommend performing a faecal worm egg count test every 3-4 months but an Equisal test should be performed every 6 months due the six month life cycle of the tapeworm. If you are unable to perform the Equisal test yourself for whatever reason, a blood test can also be performed by your vet to identify a tapeworm burden.

What if my horse is found to have a Tapeworm burden?

There are two drugs licenced for treatment of tapeworm- Pyrantel and Praziquantel.
A double dose of Pyrantel is necessary to treat for tapeworm. Pyrantel (Embotape or Strongoid P) also has some action against redworm, ascarid and pinworm. Praziquantel is a more targeted tapeworm treatment. It is available on its own from Cambridge Equine Hospital or in combination with ivermectin (Equimax) or moxidectin (Equest Pramox). Moxidectin treats for encysted worms so it makes sense to combine tapeworm treatment with treatment for encysted worms between December and February.
Equisal tests can be used two months post treatment to ensure treatment was effective.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at Cambridge Equine Hospital for advice relating to Tapeworm testing and treatment.
